Survival Skills: Firemaking in Snow, Part 1

PART 1 of 5: A complete series of videos by Nutnfancy and my friend chronicling firemaking in cold and snowy conditions using backpacking equipment only. The series shows the scenery, adventure, survival philosophy, gear observations, our standard joking around, and the good times with long time friend BuggetNuster (YouTube name) and Allie the Mountain Dog. We hiked into the snowy and cold Rocky Mountain bivouac location I had chosen earlier for my Wilderness Lean-To series of videos. A few shelter mods are discussed and shown but the focus of these vids is the making of the fire. I used few edits in the video making because I needed to demonstrate the work needed to create a sustainable fire in these conditions. I have found no shortcuts in the wood preparation for wilderness fire making. Several blades including the Ontario RTAK II, Ontario RAT-7, and KaBar Heavy Bowie are used to strip limbs and baton the logs into burnable pieces with the advantageous sharp edges. They performed exceptionally well in the outing and withstood some real tough use in 15ºF cold (shown of course!). The Sawvivor backpack saw again proved its worth as an accurate and indispensable wood cutter, lubricated with frequent sprays of WD-40. Fire tender used this time was Trioxane solid fuel cake and REI Stormproof matches. The resulting fire was quite manly and heated the Lean-To to incredible levels. We had planned to also build a fire reflector and maybe some other structures but as usual the ...

Survival Skills: Firemaking, Southeast US by Nutnfancy

PART 2 OF 2: A detailed fire making exercise in the Southeastern United States by Nutnfancy. Quite a different climate and foliage than the usual Nutnfancy Knife Clinic in the Rocky Mountains, this southern location provided an equally excellent location for wilderness craft. Tools used included the excellent, high value KaBar Heavy Bowie and Cold Steel Roach Belly knives, a Sawvivor backpacking saw, WD40, and a Light My Fire flint and steel. All came along and were used for demonstration purposes but not necessarily by necessity. The intent is to show viable backpacking fire tools that will get the job doneweight and compactness for carry purposes being important considerations. The secret time-saving weapon in this particular time-crunched clinic was one stick of fatwood, discussed in the video. Safety considerations, chopping, cutting, knife philosophy, and fire building techniques are necessarily discussed as the work progresses in this two-part series. If the response is good, I may do more wilderness skills videos but they might be few since they take a lot of work and are time-consuming.

Runescape : The Firemaking Project

The goal of this project was to take Firemaking art and animation to a whole new level... I started working on it after I saw Firehawk154's video "The Art Of Fire (RSMV)" -- I encourage you to watch Firehawk's video, it's brilliantly done, although he didn't take it to the huge scale I did. October 19th, 2010 - 8 hours after the video was released, it became my most liked video EVER, with 342 thumbs up. October 19th, 2010 - #25 Top Favorited (Today) - Gaming October 19th, 2010 - #96 Top Rated (Today) - Gaming July 18th, 2011 - Video reaches 50000 views. FAQ : Q: How many people are actually lighting fires? A: I am the only person shown lighting fires in this video. So, in some points in the video, you're honestly seeing 16+ different video clips being played back at once. Q: Where was this filmed? A: All of the firemaking video was taken in my POH. No, fires do NOT last forever in a POH; I recorded a small part of each image at a time, and then spliced them all together. Q: How many logs exactly did you use? A: I came up with 1568. That's 161 normal logs, 340 blue logs, 105 green logs, 50 red logs, 684 white logs, and 228 purple logs. I know that the count is a little bit off, but it's fairly accurate. Q: How much did this whole thing cost you? A: I did a price check, based on the numbers in the previous question, and based on the prices for logs and firelighters when I made this video. I came up with 546k. Bear in mind that I made mistakes and had to redo some parts, and ...

2 of 3, "Winter Sense" Firemaking in the Snow by Nutnfancy

Seriousness sets in as the temperature drops. It always does. But don't let that sense of urgency overtake you and let you make bad decisions. Put it aside, relax a little, and concentrate on the important stuff, defining your priorities according the conditions. With our camp set, our next priority is FIRE. It is a huge morale builder, dries out clothes and warms feet, provides heat, and cooks food. But in 25ºF and heavy snowpack, the fire doesn't make itself and it takes a lot of work. That's what this part of "Winter Sense" shows as I instruct the Scouts (all wilerness craft rookies) in the art of snowy firemaking. In an academic environment, firemaking seems easy. As always in TNP, I debunk that and show methods that are proven to work. Along the way we use the fire tools that make it all possible and I stress safety constantly. Available on this trip are the Cold Steel Trailmaster in Carbon 5, Ontario SP-50, Ontario Kukri, Gransfors Bruks 23" and CS Trail Boss axes, and a big ole 30" timber saw. The boys opt out of using the axes when offered, probably due to the huge energy needed to crosscut with them (all were tired) and the deep powder we operate in. You want to minimize work and calorie expenditure. A hike with sled in tow finds a standing dead wood candidate and I supervise the fall and processing with the knives. Later a few campfire stories ensue as we get warm again. In "Winter Sense," these Scouts get a good taste of real winter camping and the work that it ...

bow drill fire making / wood fired pizza oven

www.permies.com This wood fired pizza oven is made from adobe A main component is a 55 gallon barrel that acts as the oven. I like how the hinges are placed just right so it is gravity that keeps it closed. I have video of cob ovens, but this is definitely not a cob oven. Even though it is an oven and it looks like it is made of cob. This design keeps the smoke and fire seperate from the pizza. Alexia Allen of Hawthorn Farm in Woodinville, Washington, has cooked many pizzas in this wood fired oven. And she says that she almost always starts the fire with a bow drill. Alexia has worked for many years as a wilderness skills instructor, so bow drill fire making is something she has not only practiced many times, but taught to hundreds. For the bow drill fire making part of this video I have tried to not edit any of it out. I was amazed at how she could get a fire going so fast! We cooked about seven pizzas that night. Plus Kyle Koloini's calzone. Relevant threads at permies: www.permies.com www.permies.com www.permies.com www.permies.com www.permies.com music by Jimmy Pardo

Runescape's Best Training Methods: Firemaking

Do you want to AFK Firemaking for FREE at the xp rate of burning magic logs? Then the jadinko lair method might just be for you. Hey guys BlastBogiga here, just thought I would share another training method I've been using with you since the last idea I had got patched, hopefully this one makes up for it. This is honestly, my favorite way to do firemaking as it actually makes the skill bearable. I've been waiting for firemaking to be afkable for the longest time, but obviously they weren't going to add a burn all option... or were they? Because now you can just put the roots in the fire and wait for them all to burn for almost 400 xp per root. Fun stuff I must say, considering you even get the roots at four times the rate of any other log you would chop in the game. So this is by far the most practical way for anyone to do firemaking without wanting to kill themselves. IN OTHER NEWS: I have a new song out from my band, Order 204, it's called "The Order" if you'd like to check it out, it's right below. It would mean so much to me if you would tell me what you think. I think it has a pretty rockin' solo, if I do say so myself. www.youtube.com Last Video: www.youtube.com The Clan's Clan Chat: The Bogiga Unit Friends Chat: BlastBogiga Band's Facebook: facebook.com Band's Youtube: youtube.com
