AYUTTHAYA, THAILAND - OCTOBER 21, 2011:Elephantstay in Ayutthaya, Thailand, only had time to evacuate some of their rehabilitated elephants, and fifteen were left behind when flood waters swept through the camp last week. Volunteers led the remaining elephants onto the walls of a nearby fort, the only structure in the area above water level. The elephant camp itself is now under 3-4m water and has been completely destroyed. The stranded elephants need at least 1.5 tonnes of food each day to survive. This has to be brought in through flooded roads by truck from Bangkok, and then transferred onto boats for the hazardous journey upriver to the camp. Elephantstay rehabilitates injured or maltreated elephants and provides them with a home. One of their aims is to revitalise some of the lost ancient skills of elephant handling. Over the years, elephants from the centre have been used in productions such as Jackie Chan's 80 Days Around the World and Oliver Stone's Alexander.
