20 year old Alex Rawlings explains how he became fluent in 11 languages
Alex Rawlings, a 20-year-old student at Oxford University, has won a search to identify the most multilingual student in the UK Publisher Harper Collins bestowed the title on Rawlings as part of a nationwide search they launched last June in promotion of their new language and learning courses, according to the company's website. Rawlings showcased his fluency or near-fluency in 11 languages including English, Greek, German, Spanish, Russian, Dutch, Afrikaans, French, Hebrew, Catalan and Italian. Rawlings said his mother, who is half Greek, spoke to him in English, Greek and some French when he was growing up. He is currently studying German and Russian at college and taught himself other languages like Dutch because he was determined to talk to people on his travels or simply because he thought the language was interesting or beautiful. "When I was younger I always wanted to speak different languages," Rawlings said "We often visited my mum's family in Greece. My dad worked in Japan for four years. I was alway frustrated I couldn't talk to other kids in those countries because of the language." Rawlings said he's met many friends through his fluency in multiple languages and that picking up new languages gets easier over time. Rawlings plans to perfect his Russian while studying abroad in the small city of Yaroslavl, and said the next language he plans to learn is Arabic. Twenty-year-old Alex Rawlings has won a national competition to find the UK's most multi-lingual student. In which I speak broadcaster Mandarin and some Beijing dialect (北京话). I have no Chinese ancestry and was not raised in China. Began learning at age 18. Total study time? Approximately 2.5 years: 1.5 non-intensively in the US and 1 in China. How did I get to this level? Spent a truly massive amount of time spent studying -- during my one year in China, I rote-memorized literally thousands of words and characters, spoke nothing but Chinese for days on end, listened to nothing but Chinese music and watched nothing but Chinese television, and hung out exclusively with Chinese people. I do believe I have a talent for learning languages, but there's no way I could have attained fluency without studying my butt off. The result? The 帅哥you see in this video. The passage is a typically dry People's Daily article about Hu Jintao visiting the US -- I chose it because I like imitating Chinese newscasters. (Got a problem with that?) Hi everybody. My name is Daniel. I'm 26 years old and I'm a Chinese-American from San Francisco, California. In this post, I wanted to share my story of how I came to learn Spanish to a relatively fluent level. I won't say that I am close to a native speaker, because I believe that a lack of humility sabotages any language learning. Static pressure distribution over insect body. Numerical analysis of four-winged insect flight. The dragonfly Juncea Aeshna was selected as a representative of the flying four-winged insect family for simulation study. In Catia software a geometric model is developed based on photos of the Juncea Aeshna dragonfly. Then this model is imported to Gambit software which generates a mesh for the purpose of numerical calculations. Elements of the mesh are fine around the space in which the wings move. Numerical calculations in three dimensional space are realized in the Fluent software. CFD calculations of insect flight are performed to adequately simulate flight in hovering mode. Research is performed in Warsaw University of Technology - The Faculty of Power and Aeronautical Engineering - Institute of Aeronautics and Applied Mechanics.
