Watch in HD. A quick fishing session in the upper river Derwent about 1 mile below the Derwent Reservoir. At the end of the season, the fish have seen every fly and lure, the water is low (and clear) and they are very educated. That makes catching them so much more difficult. Any moron can haul trout out when the mayfly hatch is on or by standing at the top of a pool dragging a wet fly back up through it but there is something special about catching smart fish on tiny flies - much more satisfying. I was using a 7' Hardy smuggler 6 piece rod with weight 4 floating line and 2lb nylon which was about 10' long. Its been almost a year since I used any rod so my casting wasn't perfect but still produced the goods. There was loads of high vegetation on the river bank so putting a nice straight line out was difficult as I has to lift the backcast up over the obstructions.

Well, with the Carp now spawning on the lake I'm fishing its time for a change of angling. I headed down to the River Calder in search of it's Trout and Grayling. The river was carrying just a little more water than normal summer levels but this didn't affect the fishing. Fishing bead head nymphs was the method that was resulting in the most attention from the Trout in the faster runs. The Grayling on the other hand were proving hard to tempt on the dries. The takes I did receive on the dry fly from the Grayling were fast and were proving hard to hit, maybe all this Carp fishing I've been doing over the past few months has slowed me down.

With the new river Trout season just days old I headed down to the river for a couple of hours with the 4#. Finding the odd fish freely rising to a small hatch I had a bit of luck fishing the dry fly. One of these Trout gave me a big surprise when it took my fly and headed off upstream like a rocket! A great fish, and a great start to my river season! I hope there's more like this to come!
