The world's largest jet-powered RC model of the MIG 25 suffers an engine failure on takeoff, sending it plunging into a nearby field. Only expert flying by 18-year-old Clinton Kraidy (and a fist-full of luck) prevented major damage to the model. In fact, after a few hours of gluing -- the model was once again in the air and wowing the crowds. This is just some of the incredible RC model flying that took place at the 2011 ANZAC international RC jet meeting in Tokoroa New Zealand in February 2011. After a few delays and some last-minute changes to the fuel system so that the engine could draw fuel up the 8-inches between the tank-bottom and the spraybar, the first flight of the pulsejet-powered World Models TameCat has happened. It's sure not lacking in power (10lbs thrust versus 7lbs flying weight) and it was damned fast! Despite being a mild-mannered pussy-cat when powered by a regular glow-engine it's very apparent that under full jet-thrust I'm going to have to cut back the elevator throw a little. The TameCat is such a big pussy to fly once the power's off though - landing is a breeze! The engine switched to lean-mode short-cycling when I pulled high-G's in the second turn so I'll have ti increase the fuel pressure some more and reduce the size of the fuel-metering jet so as to reduce the effect of hi-G's on fuel-flow. With luck, I'll get the changes done and fly it again tomorrow! Don't miss that video -- subscribe now. This is the maiden flight of what is probably the largest jet-powered scale model of a Mig 25. At 4.2 meters long and weighing in at 42Kg, this is a huge model, skillfully test-flown by 18-year-old Clinton on the first day of the 2011 ANZAC jet rally in Tokoroa New Zealand. "Amazing scale detail" is the term that best describes this turbine-powered RC model airplane flown for the first time by pilot Paul Buckrell on the even of the 2011 ANZAC international jet meeting in Tokoroa New Zealand. This model is so good it made-simple, the task of trying to get shots which make it look full-sized. It's a newer version of the Avonds F15 Eagle which broke apart in mid-air, as seen in one of my earlier videos. This is a question I'm often asked and in this video, I'll tell you what I think is the best combination of radio and RC plane for those wanting to get into the hobby. The AXN Clouds Fly Floater is an incredibly durable model that is also very easy to fly. What's more, the total cost of getting started is well under $200 even when you include shipping fees. The AXN can be purchased from a number of different hobby stores and usually sells for between $45 and $50, the 9X radio is also widely available but the cheapest source is (like it or not) HobbyKing, where this radio is called the Turnigy 9X and lists for under $60. It would also pay to get the matching HobbyKing 6-channel receiver because the 8-channel one that comes with the radio is a little large for this model. Just a note however, if you buy the version with servos and ESC already installed, you really should by a separate UBEC to power your RC gear as the one built into that standard ESC is not powerful enough. This huge A-10 Warthog RC model plane suffered not one but two engine fires shortly after takeoff. Skillful piloting prevented a crash and a lot of fire extinguishers enabled the model to be saved but it was pretty spectacular. Yesterday night the first installation to be built by flying machines opened its doors to the public. An hour or so after the Opening, after most of the crowd had gone to drink champagne in the building next door, I snuck upstairs and recorded a few short clips of the quadrocopters. The installation, called "Flight Assembled Architecture", was conceived and built by teams led by my colleagues Fabio Gramazio & Matthias Kohler as well as Raffaello D'Andrea at the ETH Zurich. It illustrates a radically new way of thinking about materializing architecture: Use a multitude of mobile flying agents working in parallel and acting together as a scalable production means. As you can see in the video, the quadrocopters are programmed to interact, lift, transport and assemble small modules in order to erect a building. The tower is actually a 1:100 model of a "vertical village" with a height of 600 meters and housing 30'000 inhabitants. This week the Dutch company PAL-V announced the first flights of its prototype "flying car". This unique vehicle is called the PAL-V One, or the 'Personal Air and Land Vehicle', and It marks the start of a new era. On the ground the vehicle drives like a sports car. Within minutes its rotor is unfolded and its tail is extended: then it is ready to take off thanks to the advanced gyrocopter technology. With these successful test results it is proven that it is not only possible to build a flying car but also that it can be done within existing international rules for both flying and driving. Having passed this important milestone the company is now inviting investors to join them in creating the future. The next step will be the design of the first commercial production model of the PAL-V, and first deliveries are expected in 2014. This short video was recorded in the UK. The model as flown by Ali Machinchy was an Airworld Hawker Hunter - The estimated cost to build this model was over £10000. Unfortunately, this model was totally destroyed on Saturday 9th May 2009, when it took it's last flight, all control of the model was lost, resulting in this amazing crash and fireball.
