Flying robots, the builders of tomorrow

Dec. 2 - A team of scientists has demonstrated that a coordinated group of pre-programmed, autonomous robots can do the job of building workers, constructing a six meter high tower without any human intervention. Architects say this new technology paves the way for new methods of engineering buildings of the future. Georgina Cooper reports.

Robot Quadrotors Perform James Bond Theme

Flying robot quadrotors perform the James Bond Theme by playing various instruments including the keyboard, drums and maracas, a cymbal, and the debut of an adapted guitar built from a couch frame. The quadrotors play this "couch guitar" by flying over guitar strings stretched across a couch frame; plucking the strings with a stiff wire attached to the base of the quadrotor. A special microphone attached to the frame records the notes made by the "couch guitar". These flying quadrotors are completely autonomous, meaning humans are not controlling them; rather they are controlled by a computer programed with instructions to play the instruments. Penn's School of Engineering and Applied Science is home to some of the most innovative robotics research on the planet, much of it coming out of the General Robotics, Automation, Sensing and Perception (GRASP) Lab. This video premiered at the TED2012 Conference in Long Beach, California on February 29, 2012. Deputy Dean for Education and GRASP lab member Vijay Kumar presented some of this groundbreaking work at the TED2012 conference, an international gathering of people and ideas from technology, entertainment, and design. The engineers from Penn, Daniel Mellinger and Alex Kushleyev, have formed a company called KMel Robotics that will design and market these quadrotors. Quadrotor Autonomous Flight and Obstacle Avoidance with Kinect Sensor

More info: hybrid.eecs.berkeley.edu This work is part of the STARMAC Project in the Hybrid Systems Lab at UC Berkeley (EECS department). hybrid.eecs.berkeley.edu Researcher: Patrick Bouffard PI: Prof. Claire Tomlin Our lab's Ascending Technologies [1] Pelican quadrotor, flying autonomously and avoiding obstacles. The attached Microsoft Kinect [2] delivers a point cloud to the onboard computer via the ROS [3] kinect driver, which uses the OpenKinect/Freenect [4] project's driver for hardware access. A sample consensus algorithm [5] fits a planar model to the points on the floor, and this planar model is fed into the controller as the sensed altitude. All processing is done on the on-board 1.6 GHz Intel Atom based computer, running Linux (Ubuntu 10.04). A VICON [6] motion capture system is used to provide the other necessary degrees of freedom (lateral and yaw) and acts as a safety backup to the Kinect altitude--in case of a dropout in the altitude reading from the Kinect data, the VICON based reading is used instead. In this video however, the safety backup was not needed. [1] www.asctec.de [2] http [3] www.ros.org [4] openkinect.org [5] http [6] www.vicon.com

Flying robots

Researchers at the Swiss Federal institute of technology in Lausanne have developed an autopilot drone, which -- combined with a special software -- can create 3D aerial images. The project has now become a spin-off company, senseFLY, which is trying to find a market for the device. Research into new applications for the drone is continuing, looking at how several of the devices can be put into the air simultaneously like a flock. (Michele Andina, swissinfo.ch)

Flying Robots Build a 6-Meter Tower

Read more on: www.zeitnews.org Yesterday night the first installation to be built by flying machines opened its doors to the public. An hour or so after the Opening, after most of the crowd had gone to drink champagne in the building next door, I snuck upstairs and recorded a few short clips of the quadrocopters. The installation, called "Flight Assembled Architecture", was conceived and built by teams led by my colleagues Fabio Gramazio & Matthias Kohler as well as Raffaello D'Andrea at the ETH Zurich. It illustrates a radically new way of thinking about materializing architecture: Use a multitude of mobile flying agents working in parallel and acting together as a scalable production means. As you can see in the video, the quadrocopters are programmed to interact, lift, transport and assemble small modules in order to erect a building. The tower is actually a 1:100 model of a "vertical village" with a height of 600 meters and housing 30'000 inhabitants. To learn more about the technology (control architecture, collision avoidance and freeway based flight, prick placement, safety systems, etc.) and architectural aspects (geographic location, transit times, access plans, structural and wind tunnel analysis, etc.), have a look at www.idsc.ethz.ch

Fast Transitions of a Quadrocopter Fleet Using Convex Optimization

Fast, safe transitions of multiple quadrocopters are often required in the Flying Machine Arena. In this video, we use an algorithm based on convex optimization to plan collision-free trajectories. In the first part of the video, the destination points are selected ahead of time and collision-free trajectories are pre-computed. All the trajectories are stored before execution. In the second part of the video, however, the next set of destination points is picked at random while the vehicles are still en-route, demonstrating that the algorithm is fast enough to be used in real-time. * Project by Federico Augugliaro, Angela Schoellig and Raffaello D'Andrea Institute for Dynamic Systems and Control, ETH Zurich, Switzerland * Based on the work by Yang Wang, Ekine Akuiyibo, Stephen Boyd Information Systems Laboratory, Stanford University, USA * Filmed at ETH Flying Machine Arena www.FlyingMachineArena.org

I understand these are also available from Donovan's Hobby Center in Sioux Falls, SD with free shipping in the USA. With SmartBird, Festo has succeeded in deciphering the flight of birds - one of the oldest dreams of humankind. This bionic technology-bearer, which is inspired by the herring gull, can start, fly and land autonomously -- with no additional drive mechanism. Its wings not only beat up and down, but also twist at specific angles. This is made possible by an active articulated torsional drive unit, which in combination with a complex control system attains an unprecedented level of efficiency in flight operation. Festo has thus succeeded for the first time in creating an energy-efficient technical adaptation of this model from nature. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SmartBird ist ein ultraleichtes, aber leistungsstarkes Flugmodell mit einer hervorragenden Aerodynamik und maximaler Agilität. Epson FLYING ROBOT in 2004..hmm whats available in 2010?

Video of robot Epson showed in 2004. The geeks in the robot department keep out doing themselves. The robot, 3.35 inches tall and 0.4 ounces, follows a flight-route program sent by Bluetooth wireless from a computer. On board is a 32-bit microcontroller, a super-thin motor, a digital camera that sends blurry images and a tiny gyro-sensor, which the company said may also appear in digital cameras and cell phones as soon as this year to help deliver more precise images. THIS WAS DONE IN 2004. So I wonder what Epson has up there sleeve in 2010?

Airbots - Flying robots that fight : DigInfo

DigInfo - movie.diginfo.tv Related Link www.wizinc.co.jp Currently still in the development stage, Airbots by Wiz Corporation are flying robots built for fighting. Airbots designer Kensaku Kusunoki talks about the development process: "There are many toys that you can play with on the ground, such as remote control cars, but there aren't so many toys out there that you can play with in the air. So if you're thinking about designing a remote controlled flying toy, you normally think of a helicopter shape, but in order to reduce the cost i decided to make it wired to the controller. The next thing I thought about was how to make it lightweight, so I came up with the idea of using styrofoam in the shape of a robot for the body. Lastly, I wanted to make it easy use to without a lot of complex controls, so i made it work simply with just a pull of a switch." The design of the Airbot is yet to be finalized but distributor Happinet Corporation are planning for a November release in Japan.
