Best of Sondheim's Follies

"Follies" is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by James Goldman. Several of its songs have become standards, including "Broadway Baby," "I'm Still Here," "Too Many Mornings," "Could I Leave You?" and "Losing My Mind." The play was nominated for eleven Tonys and won seven. "Follies" is set in a crumbling Broadway theatre, scheduled for demolition, during a reunion for all the past members of the "Weismann's Follies," a musical revue (based on the Ziegfeld Follies) which played in that theatre between the World Wars. The musical focuses on two couples, Buddy and Sally Durant Plummer and Ben and Phyllis Rogers Stone, who are attending the reunion. Sally and Phyllis were both showgirls in the Follies as were many of the other guests. Both marriages are having problems because Buddy, a traveling salesman, is having an affair with a girl on the road, Sally is still in love with Ben as she was years ago, and Ben is so self-absorbed that Phyllis feels emotionally abandoned. The two couples interact with each other and other partygoers, and throughout the first half, musical numbers from the old Follies are performed by the characters, sometimes accompanied by the ghosts of their former selves. Most of the songs are pastiches of songs by popular songwriters of the past. "Losing My Mind" is in the style of a George Gershwin ballad, The "God-Why-Don't-You-Love-Me Blues" is in the style of Cole Porter and "Loveland" is akin to a 1920s Ziegfeld Follies ...

See the Stars Shine at FOLLIES Opening Night

Take a peek at the star-studded opening night for FOLLIES on Broadway, September 12, 2011. The winner of seven Tony Awards®, FOLLIES is one of James Goldmanand Stephen Sondheim's greatest works. It is a bittersweet look at the follies of youth seen through the eyes of age and experience. When former members of the "Weismann's Follies" reunite on the eve of their theater's demolition, two couples remember their glorious past and face the harsher realities of the present. In the crumbling glamour of the theater, the shadows of their younger selves remind them of the complicated steps they've danced—both on the stage and throughout their lives. FOLLIES echoes the songs, exuberance and romance of the lively vaudevillian days between the two World Wars. With such well-known songs as "Broadway Baby," "I'm Still Here," "Too Many Mornings," "Could I Leave You?" and "Losing My Mind," the show gives voice to the ghosts that haunt the stages of Broadway's great old theaters with what the Washington Post calls some of Sondheim's "wittiest, most luminous songs."

"Furrball Follies" Each of these shorts is linked to the other chronologically. In all three, Furrball attempts to find a home, after being chased by two bully cats named Amby and Floyd. "K-9 Kitty": Furrball is taken into the house of a couple with poor vision after they mistake him for a seeing-eye dog. After the couple receive new eyeglasses, they find out that a cat is in their house, and get rid of him because they dislike cats. "Aroma Amore": After having a stripe accidentally painted on his back, Furrball hides in a junkyard, where he is pursued by Fifi Le Fume after she mistakes him for a skunk. At the end, Furrball paints Amby and Floyd to look like skunks. "Cross-Country Kitty": Furrball is taken into Mary Melody's house, where he begins pursuing Sweetie Bird. Mary takes him on vacation to distract him from the bird, but he still travels across the country several times in attempts to capture Sweetie. At the end, Furrball is scared off by dogs that Sweetie has brought into the house, and runs back to the cardboard box he had been living in at the beginning.

Ziegfeld Follies "Glorifying the American Girl" 1907~1931

Photography by Alfred Cheney Johnston, the official photographer of the Zeigfeld Follies. His portraits of the Zeigfeld Girls are considered fine art today. Thanks to the internet his photography is being re-discovered by photographers and collectors worldwide. The beauty of his work and the depth of creativity can no longer be denied. Ziegfeld Girls were the chorus girls from Florenz Ziegfeld's theatrical spectaculars known as the Ziegfeld Follies (1907~1931), which were based on the Folies Bergère of Paris. Many future stars were Ziegfeld Girls, Marion Davies, Paulette Goddard, Joan Blondell, Barbara Stanwyck, Billie Dove, Louise Brooks, Nita Naldi, Mae Murray, Bessie Love, Dorothy Mackaill, Claire Dodd, Cecile Arnold, Iris Adrian and other society and business successes such as Peggy Hopkins Joyce, Helen Gallagher, Anastasia Reilly, and Irene Hayes. Although many future stars started out as Ziegfeld girls, several others were turned down by Florenz Ziegfeld to appear in his revue. Norma Shearer (in 1919), Alice Faye (in 1927), Joan Crawford (in 1924), Lucille Ball (in 1931), Eleanor Powell (in 1927), Hedda Hopper (in 1913), and June Havoc. I included a picture of Josephine Baker, she performed in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1936.
