In this episode of Reality Deer Management, we're going to take discuss planting and preparing food plots. Unfortunately, we had some extra planting to do due to a pesky little varmit, but it gives us a good opportunity to talk about various ways to fix the problem and prevent it from happening again. We'll also give some examples of how, on any budget and with variety of resources, you can get a food plot in to help your wildlife.

Food Plots with a GroundHog MAX

I have always been lucky to have access to tractors and all their implements for our lease property in Georgia, but my Dad and I have property in Mississippi that we have permission to hunt where we do not have a tractor. In the past, we have either had to rely on someone else to plant our food plots or we just went without. We have always wanted this capability and self sufficiency and we finally found it with an ATV plow called GroundHog MAX by Tufline (). The plow itself weighs about 60 pounds and mounts to your ATV in a 2 inch receiver. If your ATV does not have a receiver, like ours did not, then it comes with a 2 inch tube and all the hardware necessary to mount the GroundHog MAX. Shown below is our installation on our 1999 Polaris Magnum 325. We also mounted it on our 1998 Polaris Magnum 500 for more power. Now that we have the GroundHog MAX installed we were ready to try it out. My Dad and I picked one of our fall food plots and we decided to plant some Eagle soybeans and sunflower seeds. So my Dad started us off by mowing the food plot with his riding lawnmower. Then a week later he sprayed the new growth with roundup by using a hand sprayer as shown below. This process worked really well and gave us easier access to bare dirt to work with. Then, a week later we used the GroundHog MAX to plow up the ground. It took us about 30 minutes to break it up with about 3 passes. In the video you can watch it and see the GroundHog MAX tear it up. Next we spread our seeds ...

Planting the Perfect Duck Food Plot - Rusty Creasey

Echo Calls - Rusty Creasey takes us through the steps of planting the perfect food plot. There's alot that goes into managing a club to hold as many mallards as possible and Rusty has definitely got it down. Any duck club worth it's salt will tell you that food is the key to holding ducks as well as attracting ducks to your club. Harvey's Duck Club takes that fact to the extreme by providing an abundance of rice through strategically placed food plots in and around their timber. It's amazing just how many birds will call this place their home during the wintering months.

Tecomate vs Evolved Harvest Food Plots part 2- tecomate still winning

Sorry about the camera work it might be bad at some points- this is a video update on the food plots at my hunting spot. I have planted tecomate brassica over the whole plot now and left a strip of evolved harvest stuff to compare. The recent growth that has come in since the last video is amazing considering its only been five days and it looks very thick in the spots where I put seeds. I missed some spots so I re-seeded at the day I made this video- Sept 8th. also get to see a view of one of my treestands as well.

Radishes - Turnips - Winter Rye - Deer Food Plots

2012 January Lake County Illinois Deer Food Plot: Purple Top Turnips - Seven Top Turnips - Forage Daikon Radishes Forage Daikon Radishes Forage daikon radishes are a variety of radish that can can grow a leafy top as high as 2 feet out of the ground and also can grow a shoot (similar to a carrot but larger) under the ground as deep as 24 inches. Forage daikon radishes are in the brassica family and have as good or better protein and mineral content as other members of the brassica family including turnips and rape. Not only do these forage daikon radishes provide attraction but they also aerate your soil, build organic matter, and increase nutrient content in the root zone. The forage daikon radish shoots under the ground rapidly decompose in early spring to create a void in the soil which aerates the soil. At the same time, the decomposing forage daikon radish shoots provide new organic matter for your plots. The third thing forage daikon radishes do to improve the soil is to reach down and pull nutrients from deep underground and use them in the development of the shoot which decompose later in the spring. There are many more functions of forage daikon radishes - all of which produce better soil quality. Like other brassica family members that make a bulb like turnips and forage beets (Forage Rape varieties do not produce a bulb), it is recommended that you rotate forage daikon radishes every few years to avoid potential long-term fungus problems. Every third year, you ...

White Tail Food Plot - Planted by Hand- Round-Up Ready Field Corn

Approx. 20000 sq ft field corn plot I planted by hand. The only machinery used was the Round-up sprayer on the back of the 4 wheeler and a weed eater. A local farmer gave me the seed. The only cost I had was in glyphosate and fertilizer - so the whole plot cost me about $65. I estimate there are at least 5000 corn plants in this field - all planted by hand. By hand I mean I used a 4 ft metal pin to make a hole 1.5 to 2 inches deep, placed in the seed, and then closed the hole with a mallet. I kept repeating the process until the entire field was planted.
