Frances Nero - Footsteps Following Me
Frances Nero won a talent contest in Detroit in 1965, won a year's recording contract with Motown, and released one single, "Keep On Loving Me", then recorded for Eddie Singleton's Shrine label, but those recordings never even came out, so she went twenty three years between releases. I wrote this song, which I adore, with Ivy Jo Hunter, the man who wrote "Dancing In The Street". I found Frances in Detroit and she hadn't even recorded for twenty three years. This was the only Motorcity release to cross over to the charts. However, and much to Frances' constant annoyance to this present day, the deal for Motorcity was an exclusive one, and was frozen, with no more releases coming out, and the only way I freed up the entire catalogue was to waive all rights to royalties for Footsteps, so none of us made a penny off it. Sad. But still a wonderful record and a classic, especially thanks to Chris Hill. And to Frances, if it upsets you that I'm featuring the song, well I'm sorry, but my pride in the record makes me determined to put it up here on my own personal page, even at the risk of upsetting you further.

In the footsteps of Alexander the Great The Battle of Gaugamela (pronounced /ˌɡɔːɡəˈmiːlə/) (Greek: Γαυγάμηλα) took place in 331 BC between Alexander the Great and Darius III of Persia. The battle, which is also called the Battle of Arbela, resulted in a massive victory for the Ancient Macedonians and led to the fall of the Achaemenid Empire. During the two years after the Battle of Issus, Alexander proceeded to occupy the Mediterranean coast and Egypt. He then advanced from Syria against the heart of the Persian empire. Alexander crossed both the Euphrates and the Tigris rivers without any opposition. Darius was building up a massive army, drawing men from the far reaches of his empire. He planned to use numbers to crush Alexander, and according to some contemporary historians he gathered around 100000 men. Darius also picked a flat plain for a battlefield so Alexander would have no advantages in terrain, and allowing Darius to use his vast horde more effectively. After the battle, Parmenion rounded up the Persian baggage train while Alexander and his own bodyguard pursued Darius. As at Issus, substantial amounts of loot were gained following the battle, with 4000 talents captured, as well as the King's personal chariot and bow. The war elephants were also captured. In all, it was a disastrous defeat for the Persians and possibly one of Alexander's finest victories. Darius had managed to escape the battle with a small core of his forces remaining intact. Queen Omega "Footsteps" 12/16/2009 By David Dacks TRACK OF THE DAY: Though dancehall clashes continue to dominate the international press coverage of Jamaica's music, roots reggae is still going strong not only in its homeland, but around the world. Many other nations have long made good reggae, and a forthcoming compilation, Joyful Noise (on I Grade Records out of St. Croix, Virgin Islands), is proof. This collection brings together four riddims, with five versions apiece. The production is split between the US and VI, while the vocalists originate from Jamaica, Guyana, the US and even Sweden(!). It's a true United Nations of reggae, but very indicative of the talent that exists worldwide at the end of this decade. Key contributors are Luton Fyah, Jahdan Blakkamoore, and the Nazarenes. Queen Omega represents Trinidad's huge roots reggae scene. With "Footsteps," she versions the "Discipline" rhythm. The horn lines, which recall some of Aswad's greatest moments, are the highlight of the organic-sounding music, while Omega delivers a soulful performance overtop. Joyful Noise will be released on January 10, 2010.
