US foreclosures go sky high

The Bank of America Plaza skyscraper in the state of Georgia, the tallest building in the southern US, is just another lamb to the slaughter after it was auctioned off for about half the amount it was worth five years ago. Once the symbol of the area's booming commercial real-estate market, the tower now represents its widespread failure. After the housing bubble burst, millions of homes have been foreclosed in the country. President Barack Obama's programmes have not helped nearly the number of people he said they would, while Mitt Romney, the Republican front-runner, says the answer is to let the market bottom out. Al Jazeera's Patty Culhane reports from Washington.

Bobby's Story: Facing Foreclosure

Made by Peter Leeman and Kyle Kehrwald Watch on Vimeo: vimeo.com Click "Show More" for details on the occupation of Bobby's home. From Occupy Minneapolis: Occupy Minneapolis will begin another home occupation to defend Vietnam era veteran Bobby Hull from eviction this Tuesday, on the national day of action against foreclosures called by Occupy Wall Street. Bobby has bravely served his country as a US Marine during the Vietnam War era and despite his sacrifice he and his family are facing eviction this winter. Bobby first began living in his South Minneapolis home when his mother bought it in 1968. The title was later transferred to him, and he made timely payments on the house for decades while his nine brothers and sisters and innumerable extended family used the home as a stable transition point as they worked through the economic downturn. Some recent health problems have caused him to fall behind in his payments. Meanwhile, US Bank has refused to negotiate with him to keep him and his family in their home. If we do nothing he and his family are facing a February eviction, in the dead of winter, with nowhere to go. Come hear directly from Bobby on the need for banks to change the way they do business with hard working families. Bobby was surprised to learn that we were organizing to help him and others in his position. "Thank God this is happening. I've read the Constitution and I know that it's supposed to be 'We the people'", Said homeowner Bobby Hull. "If people ...

The story of foreclosures and mortgages-INfocus-04-08-2012

Millions of Americans have lost or are on the verge of losing their homes in the United States. As of March 2008, an estimated 8.8 million borrowers, 10.8 percent of all homeowners, had negative equity in their homes, a number that is believed to have risen to 12 million by November of the same year. In September 2010, 23 percent of all US homes were worth less than the mortgage loan. Barack Obama's administration has fallen short of expectations to ameliorate the travesty. The latest deal gives homeowners in crisis only about USD 2000 as a consequence of their life being turned upside down. In this week's INFocus we speak to troubled home owners and experts to discover why the US mortgage crisis is a major contributor to minorities and under privileged Americans being trapped in a system that will not afford them socioeconomic mobility. Foreclosure Auction Shutdown by Singing Activists

An updated version of this video is available at: youtu.be There were four properties scheduled to be auctioned in Brooklyn last Thursday. Only one sale took place. Here's why. According to Rob Robinson of Take Back the Land.org, the disruption caused total chaos. "The court officers don't know what to do when the singing starts." The members of Organizing for Occupation, Housing is a Human Right and Occupy Wall Street who took part in the Brooklyn action included many of those who executed and planned December 6's Day of Actions. 60 Minutes: Foreclosures

Across America, recession-fueled foreclosures and plummeting home values have left countless properties abandoned and vulnerable to looting. As Scott Pelley reports in the above video, the problem has gotten so bad in Cleveland, Ohio, that county officials have demolished more than 1000 homes this year - and plan to demolish 20000 more - rather than let the blight spread and render nearby homes worthless.

Fixing the Foreclosure Catastrophe

There's frightening news that home foreclosure rates across the nation are spiking again. It's caused Moodys to predict 2012 will set a new record for foreclosures. The White House understands that the ongoing foreclosure nightmare is choking economic recovery and hopes to be able to announce changes to its main refinancing program within weeks to allow more homeowners — perhaps millions more — to participate. While this is a step in the right direction and a clear signal President Obama is doing everything in his power to ease the strain on American homeowners, its not likely to have a transformative effect on the larger economy. What's really needed is a far more ambitious proposal like the one offered by Martin Feldstein, a Harvard professor and top economic advisor to President Reagan of all people. His idea? Reduce the principal on the mortgages so that the loans are no more than 110% of the value of the properties. Banks would absorb half the cost of the principal reduction, and the government the rest. He figures the losses could amount to $350 billion. The reality is that a bold plan like this one has absolutely no chance of passing for at least another year because the Republican controlled House of Representatives refuses to even consider a plan to address the housing crisis. The GOP has instead chosen - from the day Obama was inaugurated - to create the worst possible economic conditions in the hope that voters will hold the President responsible for their ...

Ex-Marine Re-Occupies His Own Foreclosed Home in Fight Against Freddie Mac, JPMorgan Chase

democracynow.org - As Freddie Mac comes under scrutiny for betting billions on investments that profit if homeowners they issued loans to are locked into high interest mortgages, we speak with Arturo de los Santos, a US Marine veteran who was evicted last year in Riverside, California, after Freddie Mac and JP Morgan Chase foreclosed on his house last June. "We were trying to get the bank's attention to review our case again. We could not believe that after they had evicted us, they modified our loan," de los Santos says. "I called them and I told them, 'I thought we were doing the loan modification.' And they go, 'Well, we have a loan modification department and a foreclosure department, and the foreclosure department decided to sell the house.' So they sold the house." De los Santos and his family re-occupied their home in December with help from the Occupy movement, but face eviction again this week. Just before 11 am today- November 8, 2011, members of the Worcester Anti-Foreclosure Team (WAFT), homeowners Pablo and Shirley Travieso and family, and members of Occupy Worcester lined up in front of the Traviesos' two-story house at 24 Illinois St., drowned out the voice of auctioneer John Baker by chanting loudly, and blocked his entry to the property. The 44 protesters held signs and their chants included "Bank of America/Bad for America", "Banks got Bailed Out/We got Sold Out", and "What does democracy look like?/This is what democracy looks like!" The auctioneer, John Baker, acting for Bank of New York Trust, trustee for a bundle of mortgages in which this one was included, gamely proceeded with the auction at 11am despite the noise, and as there were no other bidders, the bank took back the house for $79900. Foreclosure Fraud: Judge and Bankster caught on video, Juan B. Colas, Anchor Bank Pt.1

mortgagemovies.blogspot.com mortgagemovies.blogspot.com They told a Congresswoman that they had not sold off the note. Sooooo.... if you haven't sold off the note can I see it? I'll come back to your office tomorrow, okay? Query, what if someone starts putting up certified checks and demanding that banks like Anchor Bank produce the original Note and Mortgage or start paying liquidated damages for the lost profits owed to the unwitting mortgagor, who basically signed what is best recognized as an adhesion contract? *************** There was a complete no-show on the hearing scheduled today but no one told the Counter-Plaintiff. The Bailiff/Clerk or Session 8 told us on video that they tried to reach him but that's completely unbelievable because his name and full contact information is of course on file with the Court. He alleges that the same thing happened when Anchor Bank was granted receivership, now I believe him given what I witnessed today. Frankly the US Justice Department should step in because this is ridiculous. I had a brief chat with Judge Colas and another chat Anchor Bank President and COO Mark Timmerman pictured, above (not certain if he still holds that position, see the graph at bottom) at the Executive Office of Anchor Bank.
