Bong Hits 4 Jesus

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Supreme Court ruled against a former high school student Monday in the "Bong Hits 4 Jesus" banner case -- a split decision that limits students' free speech rights. Joseph Frederick was 18 when he unveiled the 14-foot paper sign on a public sidewalk outside his Juneau, Alaska, high school in 2002. Principal Deborah Morse confiscated it and suspended Frederick. He sued, taking his case all the way to the nation's highest court. The justices ruled 6-3 that Frederick's free speech rights were not violated by his suspension over what the majority's written opinion called a "sophomoric" banner.

Morse v. Frederick Supreme Court arguments

From aclu.org: Joseph Frederick was suspended in 2002 for displaying a sign saying "Bong Hits 4 Jesus" at a rally for the Olympic torch relay in Juneau, Alaska. The rally was an off-campus event not sponsored by Frederick's school. A federal appeals court agreed with the ACLU that the school had violated Frederick's right to free speech. The Supreme Court will now rule on Morse v. Frederick. In addition, the Court's ruling will decide whether Tinker v. Des Moines, the test for virtually all student speech cases since 1969, remains good law. Watch footage from March 19, 2007 in front of the United States Supreme court, where many showed their support for Frederick, and freedom of speech.

The Lion Tamer - Frederick Hodges, piano

Subtitled "A Syncopated Fantasia", this rag was published in 1913 by AF Marzian. The composer credit is shown as Mark Janza, but we now know this to have been a pseudonym used by Al Marzian himself, so that he didn't look self-serving when publishing his own music. It's a rather popular rag among ragtime musicians. Frederick's long two-handed triplet run up the keyboard at the end is a reference to Tom Brier's "Razor Blades", which had been sung about in a humorous parody of "To Dream the Impossible Dream" earlier in this Saturday concert at the 11th annual Sutter Creek Ragtime Festival. www.frederickhodges.com http

King Frederick IX of Denmark

Frederick IX (Christian Frederik Franz Michael Carl Valdemar Georg) (11 March 1899 -- 14 January 1972) was King of Denmark from 20 April 1947 until his death. He was the son of King Christian X of Denmark and Queen Alexandrine, born Duchess of Mecklenburg. Frederick's reign saw great change. During these years, Danish society shook off the restrictions of an agricultural society and developed a welfare state. And, as a consequence of the booming economy of the 1960s, women entered the labour market. In other words, Denmark became a modern country, which meant new demands on the monarchy.

Novelette in Fourths (George Gershwin) played by Frederick Hodges

www.frederickhodges.com This tune is on Frederick's latest CD, "Racing Down the Black and Whites", available for purchase from his web site (see link above). His site also has practice and technique tips for aspiring pianists. The tune is an early one from Gershwin, composed in 1919. One of the hallmark's of Frederick's period-style playing is his use of the sostenuto pedal (the middle pedal on the piano). You can hear it in use here frequently -- listen for one note sustained while both hands are playing staccato notes elsewhere on the keyboard. Frederick gives an excellent demonstration of how the sostenuto pedal is utilized in this video www.youtube.com
