SALE TODAY: Learn Piano on iOS bit.ly Lesson 7: What Are Guitar Frets? --------------------------------------------------------------------- Frets are the silver strips of metal that run up and down the entire length of (most) guitar fretboards, or the front face of the guitar neck. If you hold down a string between different frets while plucking that same string throughout, you'll notice the pitch of your notes change each time you go over a new fret wire. This is because the main job of frets is to control the intonation of each string, helping guitarists select which notes and chords they play. Below our instructor Thomas explains how the word "fret" actually has two meanings. Watch closely and learn how these tiny wires help define this versatile instrument. Guitar Frets --------------------------------------------------------------------- Guitar frets are thin strips of metal that are embedded in the neck of the guitar. They are raised up from the face of the fretboard in order to separate the neck into different semi-tonal intervals. This basically means that each fret indicates a different note. Frets are numbered just like the strings are. They are not, however, numbered by the metal pieces themselves but by the space in between the metal pieces. For instance, the "first" fret on the guitar is the space between the nut and the first metal piece. Leveling a high fret without the use of luthier specific tools. I own a fair amount of specialized tools (most of which are homemade) for guitar work, but the purpose of this video is to show people how to take care of a high fret with items/tools they might already own or can buy cheaply at any hardware store. A credit card is used as a fret rocker and a 3 square (triangle) file bought for $4 at Home Depot is used to take down the fret top and re-crown the fret. While I use MicroMesh to remove the tooling marks and polish the fret, various grades of sandpaper and/or steel wool will accomplish the same thing.

While preparing for Shanghai (as requested by someone in the audience), Andy McKee broke a string and began talking about his tour in Asia while restringing. Towards the end of the video he explains why the frets on his guitar are crooked, a question a lot of people are wondering. Basically, the fanned frets on his new Greenfield guitar are both comfortable ergonomically and provide more accurate intonation. And although he doesn't mention it in this video, fan frets handle dropped tunings much better than regular frets do (and since Andy plays in so many different alternate tunings, fanned frets must be a dream come true). Thicker strings are naturally designed for a wider scale length - I would say all guitars should be built this way, and for a lot of handmade instruments with more than 6 strings, they are mandatory. Lots of players teach and use the 1 finger per fret method. It's often misunderstood and causes all kinds of strange shapes and positions on the neck. Here's a little advice on using it well. I've stated this in the video, but this lesson is referring to shapes down at the bottom of the neck(where most bassists spend most of their time) up at the top of the neck the frets are very close together, you can play one finger per fret all you like.

This near mint single-cone (variant 6) resonator with a 16 inch wide and 3 1/3 inch deep nickel plated body weighs just 7.50 lbs. and features a sand blasted Hawaiian scene on back, palm trees on front and a solid area on the sides with two 'rolled' 'f' holes on the top. Single supporting wooden bar (1 1/8 x 5/8 inches) running along length of body and sitting on two smaller pieces of wood, which in turn each sit on circular wooden base. There are two other wooden supports which also sit on wooden bases. Solid maple neck with black-to-clear finish, a nut width of 1 3/4 inches and a deep 'V' profile. Slotted peghead with rear-facing three-in-a-line strip tuners with oval ivory buttons. Headstock face with 'shield' shaped gold and black decal with "Trade Mark" in gold and "National" in red. Serial number impressed into top of headstock. Single bound 'ebonized' maple fretboard with 19 original medium-thin frets (14 clear of the body) and pearl dot position markers. Nickel plated resonator cover with nickel-plated hand rest over 2 9/16 inch diameter center hole secured by nine screws. The cover is beautifully decorated with small diamond shaped "crow feet" cutouts. Single 'swirl' design resonator with wooden bridge on circular ebony base (secured to resonator by single center screw). Trapeze style tailpiece with single strap-button screw fixing and original blue felt protector pad on the underside.
