New hydrogen blast at Fukushima nuclear reactor after Japan quake-tsunami

Follow latest updates at twitter.com and www.facebook.com To the latest developments in Japan now where there's been a second blast at the Fukushima nuclear plant. 11 people were injured in the explosion. The reactors are said to be intact at the moment. And officials claim there hasn't been a change in the radiation levels since the latest incident took place. At least 22 people have already been exposed to radiation - after an earlier explosion following Friday's devestating tremor and tsunami. Officials say the possibility of another blast is now unlikely. People within a 20km radius of the reactor have been evacuated to safety. There had been warnings of a three-metre high tsunami moving towards the northeast coast of Japan caused by a strong aftershock. We're now getting reports that the alert has been lifted. Prime Minister Naoto Kan has called it the worst crisis since World War II. RT's Ivor Bennett is in Sendai, one of the towns worst-affected by the huge wave.

A buildup of hydrogen in the Fukushima Daiichi plant's No. 3 reactor building likely caused the blast, authorities said, which injured six people. But the explosion did not damage the reactor or result in significant radiation leakage, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano told reporters. Kyodo, citing the same company, said that there were measurements of 751 microsieverts and 650 microsieverts of radiation early Monday. Both are above the legal limit, albeit less than one reading recorded Sunday. "Nuclear facilities in Japan ... were built to withstand earthquakes -- but not an 8.9 earthquake," said James Walsh, a CNN contributor and research associate at MIT's security studies program.

'Worst-case scenario: Fukushima fuel pool with plutonium catches fire'

Engineers at Japan's struggling Fukushima nuclear plant have resumed efforts to remove built-up radioactive water. It comes after a powerful aftershock forced crews to flee the area. On Tuesday Japan raised the nuclear alert around the facility to the maximum level of seven. This puts the crisis on a par with the Chernobyl disaster. The decision was based on new data showing more radiation had leaked from the damaged plant than previously thought. But officials say that the upgrade does not mean the situation has become more critical. Meanwhile, attempts to restore cooling systems at the reactors appear to be no closer to success. 'Fukushima's 'nuke sub' reactors emergency track record not good'

Follow latest updates at twitter.com and www.facebook.com The Fukushima nuclear disaster will most probably awake controversy about nuclear energy justification, shared Senior Research Fellow in the Energy and Environmental Programme, Walt Patterson. He revealed that the water-cooled reactors used at Fukushima-1 power plant were originally designed in the US to be used in submarines and are very specific as they are compact but very productive. This only added sophistication to the already very much complicated technology and the track record of this type of reactor, criticized a lot in the US, is not good. 'Fukushima crisis eerily similar to 1979 Three Mile Island accident'

Follow latest updates at twitter.com and www.facebook.com Richard Thornburgh served as Governor of Pennsylvania in 1979 and had to deal with the partial meltdown at the Three Mile Island nuclear plant. The incident was the most significant nuclear energy disaster within the United States. According to Thornburgh, what is happening in Japan illustrates that we are actually helpless in the face of natural events.

Latest satellite images of crippled Fukushima nuclear plant

Follow latest updates at twitter.com and www.facebook.com DigitalGlobe has released new satellite images of Japan's tsunami-damaged Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant. The image - taken at taken at 09.35 AM local time on Wednesday - shows extensive damage to units 1, 3, and 4 reactor buildings. Smoke can be seen coming from the unit 2 reactor building, as well as from the unit 3 reactor building. Additional damage can be seen to several other buildings approximately 350 metres north of the unit 2 reactor building.

WTF!!! TEPCO DENIES Explosion at Reactor #2 Fukushima wtf update 11/29/11

OMG, the lead story is UNFUKUSHIMA BELIEVABLE! TEPCO now denies any explosion at reactor #2... it mistook the explosion for reactor 4 exploding. They are clueless HOW radioactivity escaped unit 2... that is leaking the MOST radiation out of all of them! More radioactive rice(!) How many times has that happened? I think it's close to 5 reported on at least. Totally out of control media coverup. Get The Fuck out of Japan.(!) *Note: Single radiation dose of 2000 millisieverts (200000 millirems) and above causes serious illness. See also exposure list below. Half-life of some radioactive elements [NOTE: Half-life is the time taken for a radioactive substance to decay by half.] * Cesium-134 ~ 2 years * Cesium-137 ~ 30 years * Iodine-131 ~ 8 days * Plutonium-239 ~ 24200 years * Ruthenium-103 ~ 39 days [Ruthenium is a fission product of uranium-235.] * Ruthenium-106 ~ 374 days * Strontium-90 ~ 28.85 years [Strontium-90 is a product of nuclear fission and is found in large amounts in spent nuclear fuel and in radioactive waste from nuclear reactors.] * Uranium-234 ~ 246000 years * Uranium-235 ~ 703.8 million years * Uranium-238 ~ 4.468 billion years gamma rays, alpha particles, beta particles, neutrons, uranium, plutonium, mox fuel, spent fuel rods, cooling pools, nuclear meltdown, JapanFocus.org, kyodo news, chain reaction, chlorine-38, chlorine-37, seawater, fukushima daiichi, today, update, newest information, splitting atoms, water into pacific ocean, TEPCO, Tokyo Electric ...

On-Site Video: Japan soldiers in shadow of radioactive Fukushima giant

Video released by the Japanese Defence Ministry on Friday shows soldiers working right in front of the radiation leaking Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant the previous day, Thursday 31st March. Japan Maritime Self Defence Force in Nuclear Chemical Biological (NBC) suits can be seen working on the pier of the plant taking delivery of containers of fresh water to be used to cool the damaged reactors. The water containers are delivered aboard flat bed vessels supplied by the US Navy which are pushed by a JMSDF tug boat. RT on Facebook: www.facebook.com RT on Twitter: twitter.com
