Some 45 per cent of 1080 children under 15 from the Japanese Fukushima Prefecture have tested positive for thyroid exposure to radiation, a nuclear watchdog report says. The screening was performed by Japan's Nuclear Safety Commission between March 26 and March 30 in the wake of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, the independent body said on Tuesday. Among those who tested positive, the degree of exposure was measured at 0.04 microsieverts per hour or less in the majority of cases. The maximum measured was 0.1 microsieverts per hour in a one-year-old. The government-established threshold for further investigation is 0.2 microsieverts per hour, so no emergency probe will be undertaken, officials said.

TEPCO released footage for the first time on Wednesday of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant Unit 3 reactor's spent fuel pool. The fuel rods, covered in debris from the March explosions, weren't visible in the footage but officials believe they are largely undamaged. The Chernobyl disaster was a nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine (officially Ukrainian SSR), which was under the direct jurisdiction of the central Moscow's authorities. An explosion and fire released large quantities of radioactive contamination into the atmosphere, which spread over much of Western USSR and Europe. Video has been released of workers going inside a reactor building at the damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan. The footage, provided by the plant's operator Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), shows staff walking around the No 1 reactor building in protective suits. The images were filmed on Friday, a day after workers entered the site for the first time since shortly after the earthquake and tsunami in March. TEPCO began installing air purifying equipment last Thursday, in a bid to reduce radiation levels and to improve working conditions. Human workers (as opposed to robots) were sent to survey the upper floors of Reactor 1 at Fuku-I on October 18. The workers spent most of their time on the 4th floor, checking the integrity of the pipes for Isolation Condenser system. You do get to see the 3rd and 2nd floors toward the end of the video. Robot workers (like Quince and Pacbots) wouldn't be able to navigate through the debris on the 4th floor. Govt to ban shipment of Miyagi beef cattle Japan's government has decided to suspend all shipments of beef cattle from Miyagi Prefecture, due to fears of radioactive contamination. It plans to give the order as early as Thursday. Miyagi Prefecture has shipped 1031 head of beef cattle believed to have been fed rice straw contaminated with radioactive cesium. Amounts exceeding the government-set permissible level have been detected in beef from 6 of the cattle, in quantities as high as 1150 becquerels per kilogram. This is more than twice the safety level. The government's task force on the nuclear disaster says the contaminated beef came from cattle from various parts of the prefecture, rather than from a limited area. Miyagi will become the second prefecture to have all beef cattle shipments banned, following Fukushima, which was given the order last week.
