Inside report from Fukushima nuclear reactor evacuation zone

Fukushima, Japan - The Japanese government has issued the evacuation order on March 12 for the residents living within the 20 kilometer radius of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Since then, residents have left their homes, and the "no man land" has been out of touch with the rest of the world. A Japanese journalist, Tetsuo Jimbo, ventured through the evacuation zone last Sunday, and filed the following video report. He says that, inside the evacuation zone, homes, building, roads and bridges, which were torn down by Tsunami, are left completely untouched, and the herd of cattle and pet dogs, left behind by the owners, wonders around the town while the radiation level remains far beyond legal limits. Watch the video report.

Fallout from Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant - Richard Broinowski

Journalist, author, diplomat and Adjunct Professor from the University of Sydney, Richard Broinowski tells the story of the Fukushima daiichi nuclear power plant disaster. His talk looks back to the development of the Nuclear Village in Japan, including General Electric and the American state's successful efforts to sell nuclear energy to Japan under the auspices of selling them energy self-sufficiency. Richard speaks Japanese, has lived in Japan and made many visits. He has thoroughly researched the incident and subsequent events and impacts. He is confident that Japan has, post-Fukushima, 'turned a corner' and notes that many Japanese prefectures are becoming less inclined to restart reactors in the wake of the Japanese people's diminishing faith in the technology and its various safeguards. Will we see Japan embrace renewable energy production with their famous reputation for innovation and stoicism? What does the Fukushima disaster mean for the future of the nuclear power industry beyond Japanese shores? What of the Australian uranium mining industry, and its commercial viability? Richard Broinowski gave this public lecture in the Hawke Centre at the University of South Australia in February of 2012, ahead of the release of his forthcoming book on the subject.

Much of the mainstream media has passed by the case of a nuclear plant in Nebraska that suffered from a fire two weeks ago. Officials there say it was extinguished in about 20 minutes, but now there is cause for a new concern - water in the river is rising and specialists believe it could pose a whole new problem. There has been an ongoing no-fly zone there as well, but the officials say it has nothing to do with potential radiation, yet the public remains skeptic. Tyson Slocum, director of the Public Citizen's Energy Program, explains whether Americans should be suspicious about the nuke plant.

Nuclear Graveyard: Fukushima lets journos in

Japan has opened the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant to journalists for the first time since the disaster of last March. RT has obtained a video of the inside of the crippled complex. On Saturday, representatives of the Japanese and international media -- more than 30 reporters, photographers and cameramen -- were taken on a tour of the facility which was the site of the world's worst nuclear disaster in 25 years. Despite TEPCO's assurances that the radiation leaks pose much less danger now, the visitors had to wear a full set of protective gear during the tour. The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, some 225 kilometers northeast of Tokyo, was severely damaged by the March 11th earthquake and tsunami, and spewed large amounts of radioactive materials onto the surrounding countryside, much of which remains off-limits. Since then, the authorities have struggled to contain the crisis, with pledges being given in the summer that it would be resolved by the end of this year. However the Japanese government has admitted that it will take up to 30 years to completely neutralize the radiation released from the reactors. Japanese officials are planning to pump out contaminated water from the stricken reactors at the Fukushima nuclear plant. Authorities hope the measure will help resume efforts to restore the facility's cooling system. It's unclear when the operation will start, as radiation levels around the site are continuing to rise. The latest tests show it's now ten thousand times the legal limit in groundwater near the plant.
