I had the same trouble when I was first trying to learn the piece. The reason for this is that Beethoven is playing a rhythmic trick on us; the piece is notated in 3/8 time, but the notes sometimes form 3/8 groups and sometimes form 3/4 groups (or, at the beginning, 2/4). I've made a version of the score that shows how this works; you might find that it is easier to learn from this: www.musanim.com Q: I want to learn to play the piano; what advice can you give me? A: I've put some suggestions here: www.musanim.com Q: Did Beethoven write this when he was deaf? A: Beethoven started losing his hearing in 1796, when he was about 26 years old; Carl Czerny said that he could hear music in 1812, but he was almost completely deaf by 1814. He wrote Fur Elise 1808 and 1810, so he probably could hear it, at least a little. In any case, he could certainly hear it perfectly "in his head," since he could read music (and hear in it his "mind's ear") just as easily as most people can read <b>...</b>

Fur Elise is a piece written by Beethoven for a woman he wanted to romantically pursue, when he was 40 years old. Fur elise is a very beautiful piece written in 3/8 time. Fur Elise has several mood changes and has become famous for it's elegance and beauty. I hope you enjoy listening to my interpetation of fur elise. It's a timeless piece, I hope I can do it justice!
Für Elise/ For Elise - Ludwig van Beethoven
"Für Elise" (For Elise) is the popular name of one of Ludwig van Beethoven's (1770-1827) most popular compositions. the Bagatelle in A minor (WoO 59 and Bia 515) for solo piano, marked poco moto, dated 27 April 1810. The original autographed manuscript has been lost and the piece itself was not published until 1865. It is not certain who "Elise" was. Some scholars have suggested she was Beethoven's fifth mistress, while others have suggested that the discoverer of the piece, Ludwig Nohl, may have transcribed the title incorrectly and the original work may have been named "Für Therese"

A performance of Fur Elise on my Jammer, an isomorphic keyboard with the "Wicki-Hayden Note Layout", converted from an AXiS 49 from C-Thru Music. It's a little less polished than I'd like, but I need to move on to new projects- so here it is! Playing Fur Elise with Passion
A note from DJ... (click *more info* to read) I think Fur Elise was meant to be played something like this. I'm no expert at piano, but from the 3 weeks of piano lessons that I have taken in my life, I was taught to play songs, including this one specifically, in a way that wasn't uniform or constant. When you play piano music, interpret it as your own. Make it flow. Whats the difference you hear between this version and some others you may have heard? Is it hard to pick out? The difference is how I vary the speed, and the velocity of the notes. In other words how fast or slow I play throughout the song, and how loud or soft I play .. which both change as I play. If you do this with songs, it makes it sound much more interesting. It's also a great way to catch up in difficult spots. Just slow down, and keep going. His grandfather Ludwig and his father Johann were both musicians. Johann was to act as little Ludwig's first music teacher, but Ludwig soon changed to the court organist CG Neefe. Passing eleven years of age, Ludwig deputized for Neefe, and at twelve had his first music published. He then stayed as Neefe's assistant until 1787, when at seventeen, he took off for Vienna. Even though Vienna was to be his home for the rest of his life, this first visit was short. On hearing that his mother was dying, he quickly returned to Bonn. Five years later he finally moved to Vienna to live and work. After arriving in 1792 he studied composition and counterpoint under Haydn, Schenk, Salieri and Albrechtsberger. At the same time, he tried to establish himself as pianist and composer. His good relations with the towns aristocracy soon led to a secured income. In 1809, with the sole condition that he stayed in Vienna, Prince Kinsky, Prince Lobkowitz and Archduke Rudolp even guaranteed Beethoven a yearly income. But going back to the years around 1800, which is traditionally called the early period, he was still trying to master the high classical style.
