Furball Pet Friends - In this Kitten Catchers vlog we trap several of the feral cats and kittens. Filmed in Malibu, California We were able to borrow the 4 traps from the Stray Cat Alliance, in Los Angeles, California. We did have to put down a deposit of $75 per trap and we can keep them for a month. On returning the traps we will get our money back. You can contact your local Feral Cat organizations or local animal shelter to borrow traps. Because there are so many feral cats, these organizations are overwhelmed. It is usually best to contact them through email and they will get back to you. They are many free or inexpensive spay and neuter programs. We googled and emailed and called and found lots of resources. However this can take time. We took too much time and ended up with 10 additional kittens. This is the first time she brought her kittens out. We caught this cute scene in our backyard by accident when this wild group of baby raccoons set off our motion sensor light. We know the mother, who has been hanging out at our house fro the part few years and is very interested in our 5 cats. We call her Peepers because she is always spying on us. Furball Pet Friends - July 25, 2011 We happened to be in Westwood, California today and came across this protest and march staged by SAEN - "Stop Animal Exploitation Now" at UCLA. UCLA research program rocked by federal law violations, and refusal to allow USDA inspectors to investigate. The university was just cited for violations of the animal welfare act including not having appropriate veterinarian care for The report notes UCLA staff refused to let the federal inspector see portions of their labs. Among other information, SAEN, an Ohio nonprofit which monitors the nation's research laboratories for taxpayer waste and cruelty to animals, said it will make available a statement by Dr. Lawrence Hansen, a Neuroscience professor at UC San Diego, suggesting UCLA methamphetamine research is useless and cruel. "Millions of animals die in US labs every year, many under barbaric conditions, in questionable research using scarce tax dollars," said Michael A. Budkie, AHT, Executive Director, SAEN. Furball Fables - Cats navigate bubble wrap. No cats were harmed in the making of this video! Behind the Scenes info! We were all bored. There has been no sunshine in Los Angeles for weeks. The cats watched from inside with great interest as the bubble wrap was put out. They are always excited and know when something special is happening for them. They all ran out onto their cat patio quickly and were shocked by the feel of the bubble wrap. Many of the popping sounds were actually the human stepping on the bubble wrap. If you look closely the cats slammed the screen door by mistake at the end for the big bang ending! The next day the sun came out finally and they all lounged on the bubble wrap like it had been there forever. Not all cat communication comes from their mouths. They express much with their tails and the nether regions : - ) From Cat Talk by Amy Shojai, CABC Once they feel comfortable with each other the cats progress to sniffing flanks. That could be similar to a human "nice to meet you" polite handshake. This is the area that holds family scent of other cat's body rubs, grooming, or a human's petting hand so it tells the sniff-er quite a lot about the cat. Cat Butt Presentation Finally the last step is a sniff of the anal region beneath the raised tail. The cat's signature scent is found here. Kitties that keep the tail down and don't want to be sniffed might be compared to a shy person hiding her face. A raised tail signals "I mean no threat." So the combination of raised tail with offering a butt-sniffing opportunity is the equivalent of a human's enthusiastic hug or a kiss on each cheek in greeting. When kitty presents his tail in your face, does he really expect you to sniff? Probably not. Cats are smart, and as much as they love us, they realize we are not feline. But the body language of politely opening themselves up to a sniff-figuratively uncovering their face so we see and recognize the "real kitty"-is a huge compliment granted between trusting friends. The cat butt sniff offer is a back-handed feline compliment.
