Remembering Yuri Gagarin

On April 12, 1961 Yuri Gagarin became the first human to escape Earth's gravitational pull and visit Space. Colonel Yuri A. Gagarin was born on a collective farm in a region west of Moscow, Russia on March 9, 1934. His father was a carpenter. Yuri attended the local school for six years and continued his education at vocational and technical schools. Yuri Gagarin joined the Russian Air Force in 1955 and graduated with honors from the Soviet Air Force Academy in 1957. Soon afterward, he became a military fighter pilot. By 1959, he had been selected for cosmonaut training as part of the first group of USSR cosmonauts. Yuri Gagarin flew only one space mission. On April 12, 1961 he became the first human to orbit Earth. Gagarin's spacecraft, Vostok 1, circled Earth at a speed of 27400 kilometers per hour. The flight lasted 108 minutes. At the highest point, Gagarin was about 327 kilometers above Earth. Once in orbit, Yuri Gagarin had no control over his spacecraft. Vostok's reentry was controlled by a computer program sending radio commands to the space capsule. Although the controls were locked, a key had been placed in a sealed envelope in case an emergency situation made it necessary for Gagarin to take control. As was planned, Cosmonaut Gagarin ejected after reentry into Earth's atmosphere and landed by parachute. Colonel Yuri Gagarin died on March 27, 1968 when the MiG-15 he was piloting crashed near Moscow. At the time of his death, Yuri Gagarin was in training for a ...

Yuri Gagarin - First Human in Space, 12 April 1961

Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin was a Soviet pilot and cosmonaut. He was the first human to journey into outer space, when his Vostok spacecraft completed an orbit of the Earth on 12 April 1961. Gagarin became an international celebrity, and was awarded many medals and honours, including Hero of the Soviet Union, the nation's highest honour. Vostok 1 marked his only spaceflight, but he served as backup crew to the Soyuz 1 mission (which ended in a fatal crash). Gagarin later became deputy training director of the Cosmonaut Training Centre outside Moscow, which was later named after him. Gagarin died in 1968 when a MiG 15 training jet he was piloting crashed.

How to draw Yuri Gagarin - First Man in Space

Yuri Gagarin was bit of a hero to me while I was growing up. I was only four when he became the first man in space, on April 12th 1961, but I remember the excitement of the grownups and somehow understanding it was a great event and decided, like many other boys my age, that I would be a space man when I grew up. We soon learned to call Russian Space Men Cosmonauts and the Americans, Astronauts This led to a fascination with space and rockets, fuelled by TV programmes like Lost in Space, Thunderbirds and Fireball XL5. My favourite ice lolly was a Zoom - space rocket inspired shape - that came with space collector cards and my favourite pop record was Telstar by the Tornados. Gagarin was an international celebrity, helped by his wide, winning smile and handsome good looks. He looked everything a hero should be. Sadly he died in 1968 when he crashed the MIG 15 training jet that he was flying at the time. You can find out more about Yuri Gagarin at en.wikipedia.org This tutorial is brought to you by award winning illustrator, Shoo Rayner, who has illustrated well over 200 children's books for famous authors and for his own stories. Follow Shoo's other channels www.youtube.com for longer more detailed drawing lessons and www.youtube.com for chat, advice, techniques and interviews with other great artists and illustrators. I used a Staedtler Mars Lumograph 6B pencil. The paper is fairly cheap drawing cartridge or bristol paper. Find out more about me and my books at my website ...

GAGARIN ABC NEWS SPECIAL REPORT ON TV, April 12, 1961

Jules Bergman began covering developments in space exploration during the 1950s. He went on to cover the entirety of the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab and Apollo-Soyuz programs for ABC.[5] Bergman's reporting for ABC was noted for its direct style. In contrast to the more avuncular style of CBS anchor Walter Cronkite, Bergman's reporting took a very serious tone, and was very direct (to the point of seeming pessimistic at times) about the possible consequences of any mishaps or accidents that took place during a spaceflight, such as the Apollo 13 accident.[6] In order to more fully understand the astronauts and their missions, Bergman often took part in the same training and simulations that the astronauts did.[7] Bergman later covered the missions of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's unmanned space probes, notably the Viking and Voyager programs. He also covered the Space Shuttle program from its first through the 1986 Challenger disaster.[8] Jules Bergman (March 21, 1929 -- February 11, 1987), a broadcast writer and journalist, served as Science Editor for ABC News from 1961 until his death in 1987. He is most remembered for his coverage of the American space program. INFO: WIKIPEDIA CUTS

Space~"First Orbit" Documentary [ Yuri Gagarin ].

First Orbit. April 12th 1961 -- Yuri Gagarin is about to see what no other person has seen in the history of humanity -- the Earth from space. In the next 108 minutes he'll see more than most people do in a lifetime. What sights awaited the first cosmonaut silently gliding over the world below? What was it like to view the oceans and continents sailing by from such a height? In a unique collaboration with the European Space Agency, and the Expedition 26/27 crew of the International Space Station, this film shows what Gagarin first witnessed fifty years ago. By matching the orbital path of the Space Station, as closely as possible, to that of Gagarin's Vostok 1 spaceship and filming the same vistas of the Earth through the new giant cupola window, astronaut Paolo Nespoli, and documentary film maker Christopher Riley, have captured a new digital high definition view of the Earth below, half a century after Gagarin first witnessed it. Weaving these new views together with historic, recordings of Gagarin from the time, (subtitled in English) and an original score by composer Philip Sheppard, this is a spellbinding film to share with people around the world on this historic anniversary. Google in Gagarin's footsteps? New face of space race

April 12, 2011 will mark 50 years since Yuri Gagarin broke through the Earth's atmosphere to become the first man in space. Within a decade, man had been to the moon. But did the space race die with the Cold War Technology Update finds a rebirth in science and engineering that's reaching for the stars. New space centers are opening with new launchers to fit. Mars' moon Phobos could in fact be a captured asteroid. Private companies have orbital ambitions for former Soviet hardware. Neutron beam detectors might help us find water ice in the lunar shadows. Russian engines shoot the rockets of their former American rivals into space. And Google wants to pay somebody $25 million to put its flag on the moon. In the words of Yuri Gagarin -- Poekhali! Yuri Gagarin- 50th anniversary of the first human spaceflight

Russia celebrates the anniversary of the first human spaceflight on 12 Apr 1961 by Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin as Cosmonautics Day. The Russian Space Agency has invited heads of 49 space agencies and astronauts who took part in space expeditions on Soviet and Russian spacecraft to attend the 50th anniversary celebration in Moscow on Apr 12. Around the world, it is celebrated as Yuri's Night and celebrated with parties. Gagarin was also the first human to orbit the earth. He was preceded into Space by a Russian dog, Laika. The 1961 flight made Gagarin an international hero; he was awarded the Order of Lenin and made a deputy of the Soviet parliament, the Supreme Soviet. It represented a second propaganda coup for the Soviet Union during the Cold War -- the first was the launch of Sputnik -- and it heated up the space race with the United States. The United States didn't put a man into space until Alan Shepard's sub-orbital flight on 5 May 1961. NASA's Apollo missions to the Moon are regarded as a direct result of the need in the US to even the score. Festivities in 54 countries are registered on the website www.yurisnight.net, which is maintained by the Space Generation Advisory Council. Even a research base in Antarctica marks Yuri's Night, according to the council, meaning the night is toasted on all seven continents. www.theregister.co.uk Space flutes salute Yuri Gagarin By Lester Haines Posted in Space, 12th April 2011 08:53 GMT NASA astronaut Cady Coleman and Jethro Tull founder Ian Anderson hooked up late last week to pay homage to Yuri Gagarin when they whipped out their flutes for "the first space-Earth duet". Coleman is currently aboard the ISS as part of the Expedition 27 crew. Anderson was on tour in Perm, Russia, and took a moment to join the musical salute to "rocket heroes": The tune is an extract from Bourree, which Jethro Tull played while on a US tour during 1969, as Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stepped on the Moon. Anderson fan Coleman has one of her idol's flutes with her aboard the ISS, as well as her own instrument. She's also got a penny whistle and flute belonging to Irish group the Chieftains. She said of space flautism: "It is really different to play up here. I've been having the nicest time up in our Cupola. I float around in there. A lot of the times I play with my eyes closed." Coleman isn't the first astronaut to play a flute in orbit. Ellen Ochoa (see pic, above) tickled the keys back in 1993, when she was aboard Discovery on its STS-56 mission. Unless there's something they're not telling us, Yuri Gagarin didn't have a flute to hand on 12 April 1961 when he became the first man in space as his Vostok 1 spacecraft took him on a 108-minute orbit. Time magazine declared: "Triumphant music blared across the land. Russia's radios saluted the morning with the ...

Yuri's Night 2011 International Space Station Crew: 50th Anniversary of Human Spaceflight

Floating high above the Earth, the Expedition 27 crew aboard the International Space Station sends their special message to the world to wish them a Happy Yuri's Night! Expedition 27 includes Commander Dmitry Kondratyev and Flight Engineers Andrey Borisenko, Catherine 'Cady' Coleman, Alexander Samokutyaev, Paolo Nespoli and Ron Garan. Human Spaceflight became a reality 50 years ago with the launch of a bell-shaped capsule called "Vostok 1" on April 12th, 1961. The capsule was carrying Soviet Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, who took his place in history as the first human to leave the bounds of Earth and enter outer space. Exactly 20 years later, the United States embarked on a new era in spaceflight with the inaugural launch of a new type of spaceship — the Space Shuttle (April 12th, 1981). Designed to carry a larger crew and large volumes of cargo to orbit, the Space Shuttles became synonymous with human spaceflight for an entirely new generation of young people. When the next 20-year point arrived, that generation (often called "Gen X") laid a new space milestone by connecting thousands of people around the world to celebrate and honor the past, while building a stairway to the future. That event was Yuri's Night, and it continues to bring the excitement, passion and promise of space travel closer to people of all ages, nationalities and backgrounds. yurisnight.net "Circling the Earth in my orbital spaceship I marveled at the beauty of our planet.
