Ganglion Cyst Removal in the Common Peroneal Nerve at the Fibular Head Standard Version (5.120213.120203) There are various causes of common peroneal nerve palsy, however common peroneal nerve palsy caused by a ganglion cyst is uncommon. A benign tumor within the nerve sheath can cause compression and present with symptoms of neuropathy depending on the level of injury. In this specific case, the patient presented with a ganglion cyst in the common peroneal nerve at the fibular head. Typically, a ganglion cyst presents with a sudden onset of severe pain that is associated with a motor palsy. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a cystic-appearing mass anterior to the fibular head, which was confirmed with a palpable mass. This resulted in compression neuropathy of the peroneal nerve. The surgical intervention included removal of the ganglion cyst and the decompression of the common peroneal nerve at the fibular head. PATIENT GUIDE TO SPHENOPALATINE GANGLION (SPG,) NERVE BLOCK This is a well established procedure for the control of chronic or long standing pain and has been has been safely and successfully performed since 1909. The SPG is a concentrated collection of nerve cells adjacent to the lower brain centers. It is a relay station that can regulate the flow of nerve impulses that transmit painful or distressing stimuli. This area is readily reached at either side at the back of the nose. The treatment involves the placement of wire applicators coiled with cotton dipped into a low dose local anesthetic and placed at the back of the nose. The low dose anesthetic is similar to that used by dentists for over 50 years. The applicators are left in place for about 30 minutes allowing the anesthetic to spread a short distance numbing the S.PG. Minor side effects may include: Reflex Tear Drops Tickling Feeling From The Cotton Rarely Patients May Experience A Superficial Nose Bleed Allergy To The Anesthetic, Which Is Rare Irritation To The Nose Or Epistaxis Which Rarely Happens In The Skilled Hand. My husband had a nice sized ganglion cyst on his wrist. He got one when he was younger as well and after watching videos on here we decided to try the book method and were shocked it worked!! BTW I think he was being brave about the pain :-DI kept asking him if it felt better because I was curious as to how long it took for the pain to go away. He said maybe a couple minutes and then it was hot...hours later it is just sensitive if pushed on.
