The Confession (L'Aveu) by Costa Gavras

The Confession (French: L'Aveu) is a 1970 French-Italian film directed by Costa Gavras and stars Yves Montand and Simone Signoret. It is based on the true story of the Czechoslovak communist Artur London, a defendant in the Slánský trial. Artur London, (1 February 1915 -- 8 November 1986), was a Czechoslovak communist politician and co-defendant in the Slánský Trial. He was born in Ostrava, Austria-Hungary to a Jewish family. In 1937, London went to fight in the Spanish Civil War as member of the International Brigade. He moved to France after the defeat of the Republicans and, during World War II, was arrested by the Nazis and sent to the Mauthausen concentration camp. After the war he lived in Switzerland but soon moved with family to Prague, where he became a leading figure in the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, and was eventually nominated deputy minister of foreign affairs in 1948. In 1951 he was arrested and became a co-defendant in the Slánský trial alongside Rudolf Slánský. London was accused of being a Zionist, Trotskyite and Titoist and was sentenced to life in prison. The Slánský trial (officially Proces s protistátním spikleneckým centrem Rudolfa Slánského meaning "Trial of anti-state conspiracy centered around Rudolf Slánský") was a show trial against elements of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (KSČ) who were thought to have adopted the line of the maverick Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito. On November 20, 1952, Rudolf Slánský, General Secretary of ...

State of Siege (État de Siège) by Costa Gavras

State of Siege (French title: État de Siège) is a 1972 French film directed by Costa Gavras starring Yves Montand and Renato Salvatori. Yves Montand plays Philip Michael Santore, an official of the US Agency for International Development (an organisation sometimes used as a front for training foreign police in counterinsurgency methods). Posted to a fictional South American country in the early 1970s, Santorean is kidnapped by a group of urban guerrillas. The story is based by Costa Gavras on an actual incident in Uruguay in 1970 when US Embassy official Dan Mitrione was kidnapped and killed. Using Santore's interrogation by his captors as a backdrop, the film explores the often brutal consequences of the struggle between the repressive government of Montevideo and the leftist Tupamaro guerrillas. Using death squads, the government decimates the revolutionary group, whose surviving members vote to execute the smugly calculating Santore, who is accused of arranging training in torture and political manipulation. In the finale a replacement US official arrives, watched from the crowd by a defiant and angry survivor of the radical group. en.wikipedia.org Costa Gavras: en.wikipedia.org Mikis Theodorakis: www.mikis-theodorakis.net en.mikis-theodorakis.net da.wikipedia.org en.wikipedia.org Mikis Theodorakis: Films - www.youtube.com Theodorakisfriends's Blog: theodorakisfriends.wordpress.com theodorakisfriends.wordpress.com TheodorakisFriends: www.youtube.com Los Calchakis: www ...

Mikis Theodorakis, Costa Gavras - Z (1969)

The scenes of Gavras' classic film which are scored with the music of Theodorakis. (I had to leave out a couple of them to keep the video under 10 minutes.) Based on a novel of Vasilis Vasilikos, "Z" is about the assasination (1963) of Grigoris Lambrakis, a distinguished athlete, doctor and politician, as well as an active pacifist and humanitarian. The film depicts the way para-state and paramilitary mechanisms operated in Greece and the efforts of an honest investigator against them. For more information you may watch this video: www.youtube.com . (I've used parts of it, thanks to anaf8's kind offer).

Self-Made Trailer for Costa-Gavras's "Missing"

I noticed that no one on YouTube has uploaded the trailer for Costa-Gavras's 1982 political thriller, "Missing", so I decided to create one myself. For those of you who are wondering, the film first came to my attention when I learned that its soundtrack had been composed and performed by my favorite composer, Vangelis. I have already uploaded the film's theme music onto YouTube, and it has actually turned out to be my most viewed video of my time on this site. Plus, I am a bit of a film buff anyway, so I think I know how the people at the studio might try to promote it. And speaking of Vangelis, the music in the trailer is actually from Sir Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner" - a soundtrack which the composer produced at about the same time and with slight similarities to the soundtrack to this film. Finally, I would like to give apologies (and thanks) to trauld, for the clips, and a very special thanks to Costa-Gavras, for this powerful and moving film.

The title stands for the first letter of the Greek word "Zei" ("[He] Lives!"), a popular graffito which began to appear on the walls of the buildings of the Greek cities in the 1960s, illustrating the growing protest against the conditions that led to the assassination of Lambrakis. In 1969, the Greek-French film director Costa-Gavras (??sta? Gaß???) made the film Z, which was a great success. Yves Montand starred as Lambrakis, Jean-Louis Trintignant as investigator Sartzetakis and Irene Papas as Lambrakis's widow.
