His announcement in support of gay marriage landed President Barack Obama on the cover of Newsweek magazine, calling him the first gay president. But, his declaration and the effect it will have on young Latino voters in the Valley is yet to be seen. "What we're seeing today is, we're seeing young Hispanic/Latinos being more open minded about society and what we value as a culture," Eden Ramirez with the UTPA Young Democrats said. According to the Pew Research Center, support for gay marriage is on the rise among Latinos of all ages. Figures from four years ago showed support nearly split among Latinos between the ages of 18 and 29, with 50 percent in favor. Shift forward, and that age group leads by numbers, with 58 percent of young voters believing in gay marriage. But the largest gain in support is among adults ages 30 and 49. Four years ago only 35 percent of them supported it, currently the number stands at 45 percent. Meanwhile, support from voters ages 50 and above nearly remained the same from 30 percent to 32 percent over the past four years. But for voters like Jose Flores, a pre-med junior at the University of Texas-Pan American, social issues like gay marriage are second on the list. "Right now we have to focus, I feel like we have to focus on the economy," Flores said. "I don't really consider myself a Democrat or Republican... whichever one has the best plan for the country is the one I'm going to go for." Nonetheless, political groups are hoping the <b>...</b>

The nation took another major step toward equal rights for gays and lesbians. On Wednesday - the Washington state House approved gay marriage legislation - one week after the state Senate approved similar legislation. Washington Governor Christine Gregoire is expected to sign the legislation into law making her state the seventh in the nation to give same-sex couples the same rights as straight couples. And earlier this week - a California court struck down that state's Proposition 8 ban on gay marriage as being a violation of the California Constituion. In a 2-1 ruling for the US 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, Judge Stephen Reinhardt wrote for the majority, "Proposition 8 serves no purpose, and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and dignity of gays and lesbians in California, and to officially reclassify their relationships and families as inferior to those of opposite-sex couples. "So the movement to achieve equal rights for gays and lesbians is taking off - but not everyone is on board. There have been some major developments in the fight to overturn the federal Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA. There are about a dozen lawsuits involving the anti-gay law, and this week we got one more. Immigration Equality has filed a lawsuit over the ban, which prevents the recognition of legally-married foreign spouses. And on Wednesday of this week, a court in Boston heard arguments in two other cases challenging DOMA. With Washington state recently legalizing same-sex unions and Maryland about to follow suit, gay marriage hasn't been on this big a roll since Bert and Ernie first shacked up on Sesame Street. When Maryland finalizes its bill, seven states and the District of Columbia will sanction the practice. But before you bust out the appletinis and Indigo Girls CDs to celebrate, consider that just last year in Maryland - a deep-blue, Democratic-majority state when it comes to politics - gay marriage went down faster than George Michael in a public restroom due to resistance from socially conservative African Americans in the Democratic Party. Indeed, while 71 percent of white Democrats in the Old Line State favor gay marriage, just 41 percent of black Democrats do. So what's different this time around? Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley and other pro-marriage legislators took a page from New York's gay playbook and reached around to sympathetic Republicans to seal the deal. Inconceivable even a generation ago, gay marriage is well on its way to becoming mainstream as a growing majority of Americans now favor it. The only question is when, not if, folks such as Maryland residents Justin and Phillip Terry-Smith will join heterosexuals in the joys of getting married - and divorced - happily ever after.
