GCR - CROMWELL TOOLS SPECIALS 11th to 13th OCTOBER 2010.wmv

Cromwell Tools of Leicester ran 3 days of top and tailed trains using 6 locomotives on the GCR (Great Central Railway) from the 11th to the 13th October 2010. The trains ran from Quorn to Rothley in relays giving footplate experience sessions for Cromwell Tools customers etc. Cromwell tools are a big supporter of the GCR and a trainset of newly painted Pullman coaches bearing the name of Cromwell was in use. At times there was only 10 minutes between trains leading to some great photographic opportunities with not a sole in site 90% of the time. Locomotives in use were Pitchford Hall, Duke of Gloucester, 45305, The Great Marquis, Morayshire and 78019 (78054). 71000 hauled the Cromwell Pullman set and carried the Cromwell Pullman Headboard.

GCR 'S&D Theme' Autumn Steam Railway Gala. 6th-9th Oct 2011

This year's Great Central Autumn Steam Railway Gala had a Somerset and Dorset theme, comprising of visiting locomotives S&DJR 7F No.88 from the West Somerset Railway and ex.SR un-rebuilt 'West Country Class' No.34007 "Wadebridge" from the Mid-Hants Railway. These were complimented by the last minute appearance of ex.SR 'King Arthur Class' No.30777 "Sir Lamiel" which was last seen setting fire to the East Coast Mainline causing £1000's of delays and causing a ECML weekday mainline steam ban! This was also a significant Gala for the GC, as it saw the grand opening of the new 60' turntable in Quorn yard by Loughborough MP, Nicky Morgan. Due to some recent balancing issues (the turntable was still in bits 10 days before!) instead of the 04 taking the first public turning, it was the lighter Standard 2. 9 Locomotives were in steam over the course of the weekend: -ex.SR 'West Country Class' No.34007 "Wadebridge" -S&DJR 7F No.88 -ex.SR 'King Arthur Class' No.30777 "Sir Lamiel" -GWR 'Hall' No.4953 "Pitchford Hall" -LMS 8F No.8624 -BR Standard 2 No.78019 -ex.LNER 04 No.63601 -GNR N2 No.1744

GCR 'Lostock & a Few Smoking Barrels' LMS Winter Steam Gala. 29th-31st Jan 2010 (Part 1)

It's that time of year again when the Great Central Railway hold their annual Winter Steam Gala and this year was an LMS Theme, based at Lostock Shed (10A), the last LMS shed to close in the 1960's. This is thought to be one of the biggest events that the GCR has ever staged with 8 Steam locomotives in action. 4 of which were visiting: -ex.LMS Mogul No.42968 (from the Severn Valley) -LMS 5P 'Jubilee' No.5690 'Leander' -ex.LMS 5MT 'Black 5' No.45231 'The Sherwood Forester' -ex.LMS 5MT 'Black 5' No.44767 'Geroge Stevenson' The Weekend also saw the introduction into preservation of Roger Hibbert's Jinty No.47406. A rededication ceremony was held on the Saturday but unfortunately with the timetable being behind there was no owner and no Jinty! From the home fleet was: -ex.LMS 3F 'Jinty' No.47406 -ex.LMS 8F No.48305 (running as Lostock based 48476) -BR Standard 2 No.78019 -BR Standard 7 'Britannia Class' No.70013 'Oliver Cromwell' All in all a brilliant event once againwith plenty more action to follow in Part 2!

GCR 'Go East Young Man!' Autmn Steam Railway Gala 8th-10th Oct 2010 (Part 2)

It's officially Autumn! With three visiting and two resident Eastern region locos could only mean one thing for the Great Central. An Eastern themed Gala! Not my preferred theme, that was in January at the Winter gala but this'll do nevertheless! Star of the show was the not so Easter BR Standard 8 No.71000 'Duke of Gloucester' returning to the Railway after 23 years when it was first steamed in preservation. Joining the 'Duke', ex.LNER K4 No.61994 'The Great Marquess', LNER D49 No.246 'Morayshire' and BR J27 No.69023 completed the visiting loco line up. Finalising the north of the border theme, freshly overhauled ex.LMS Black 5 No.45305 'Alderman. AE Draper' and first time renumbered BR Standard 2 No.78019 as 78054, both complete with Scottish region blue smoke box numbers and regional shed codes. As with any GCR Gala, TPO drops, mixed goods working, local train, expresses and the famous Wincutter were all highlights of the event. The final Locomotive line up was: -BR Standard 8 No.71000 'Duke of Gloucester' -ex.LMS Black 5 No.45305 'Alderman. AE Draper' -LNER D49 No.246 'Morayshire' -ex.LNER K4 No.61994 'The Great Marquess' -GNR N2 No.1744 (failed on Saturday, pm) -ex.LNER 04 No.63601 -BR Standard 2 No.78054 (78019) -BR(E) J72 No.69023 'Joem' -GWR 'Hall' No.4953 'Pichford Hall' (standing in for the failed N2 and reserve Jinty No.47406) This part takes place on the Saturday morning at Loughborough station as we see some of the locos pull off shed. GCR 'Golden Oldies' Gala. 28th-31st May 2010 (Part 1)

A first for the Great Central and as far as I am aware, a first in the UK! The Golden Oldies weekend, substituting for Thomas the Tank Engine, featured a one off line up of engines that together, aged nearly 1000 years. Two of which were from the home fleet. The line up was: -'Rocket' Replica (from the NRM) -'Planet' Replica (from the MS&I) -Beattie Well Tank No.30585 (from the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre) -Furness Railway No.20 (from the Furness Railway Trust) -ex.LNER 04 No.63601 -GNR N2 No.1744 This film covers all of Saturdays footage at the Gala.

GCR 40th Anniversary of Closure & Preservation Gala. May 2009

Over the weekend of the 8th-10th May the Great Central Railway Celebrated 40 Years since the Great Central main Line Closed in 1969 and 40 Years since a group of enthusiasts took over. Although the actual Date of Closure was on the 3rd May (the previous weekend) over the bank holiday weekend teh GCR for some reason held a Thomas the Tank Engine Event instead, maybe it was to do with a contract with the new company? Ridiculous! The resident home fleet was in operation with the star being ex.SR 'King Arthur' Class No.30777 'Sir Lamiel' -ex.SR King Arthur No.30777 'Sir Lamiel' -BR Standard 2 No.78019 -ex.LMS 8F No.48305 -ex.GCR Robinson 04 No.63601 (in its final months of its Bolier Certificate- a farewell video of the 04 to come) -Class 27 No.D5401 (27 056) -Class 46 Peak No.D123 'Leicestershire & Derbyshire Yeomanry' (Saturday Only) -Class 47 No.D1705 'Sparrowhawk' (Sunday Only) Please note- all the footage in the film was taken over Sunday only as so D123 does not appear. A mixture of Mineral trains, Local trains, Post Office trains and express trains were running with a book signing at Loughborough, Bus shuttles to see the new Mountsorrel Branch and display pictures at Rothley. It was a shame to see so little people come but a good event indeed!

GCR Thomas the Tank Engine Weekend. May 2009

The Great Central Railways 'Days Out With Thomas' weekend. The GCR holds three Thomas Weekends over the year, one in February, May and August. Since I am a menber of the Soar Valley Model Railway Club, we take an Interactive Thomas & Friends Layout (at Quorn Station) to raise money for Rainbows Childrens Hospice at these Thomas events and it is also a good time for me to try out a few new camera angles in readiness for any major Galas etc. like the forth coming 40th Anniversary Gala Celebrations. This is the final day of the 2010 Santa Special season on the Great Central Railway with a relaticely fresh snowfall the night before, I couldn't resist going down to film Steam Engines in the snow. In operation were visiting ex.GWR Small Prairie No.5526 from the South Devon Railway (on the Santa Special trains) and resident ex.LMS 8F No.48305 (on Santa Express duties) both of which were facing North giving a chance for some different filming angles.

GCR, a Parade of 2-8-0s

The weekend before the Annual Spectacular GCR/Steam Railway Gala on October 9-11 saw a smaller special event. One of the guests to the 'Heavy Metal Gala' next week, WD 2-8-0 90733 (from the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway) joined the two locomotives of the same wheel arrangement that are normally resident on the GCR for what the line called 'A Parade of 2-8-0s'. The full line-up was: LMS 8F 2-8-0 48305 GCR O4 2-8-0 63601 WD 2-8-0 90733 (visiting from KWVR) Metro-Cammel 101 DMU (not featured) The Line operated a normal High Season weekend timetable featuring the DMU on the 9:45, the 8F on the 10:15, the O4 on the 11:15 1:15 and 3:15, the WD on the 12:15 and 2:15 and both WD and O4 double heading the 4:45. This video features all the footage I managed to take whilst not cleaning either 63601, 90733 or 9F 92203 'Black Prince'. We first see the 8F departing on one a 3 'Drive a Locomotive experience' trips she operated during the day following her 10:15 passenger run. We then see 63601 departing on the 1:15 to Leicester North. With the safety valves blowing off, cylinder drainage cocks and loud long whistle, it was almost as if the crew were trying to deafen me!. The Dub-Dee then arrives from Leicester and heads off to take on water. Moving on 3 hours, by 4:30 the heavens had opened and it was blowing quite heavily, so with water on the lens and wind in the background we see the O4 entering Loughborough and passing the Dub Dee, stabled in the run-round loop. GCR Winter Diesel Running Event. 9-10.1.2010

Well, this event didn't entirely go to plan. For a start, due to the cold weather it was looking unlikely that any of our Diesels would start up then there was the failiure of the Steam Heat Van after extensive use during the Santa Special season. The good news was that the Diesels did start up successfully on the Friday (although the owners of the Class 50 requested that it would be withdrawn from the event). However, due to the absense of a loco and a Steam Heat van, Steam Engines were called upon to provide heat to the carriages and to cover for the 50. On the Saturday ran ex.LMS Black 5 No.45231 'Sherwood Forester' and GNR N2 No.1744. Unfortunately the N2 failed on the Saturday so furtunately for me the BR Standard 2 No.78019 was called upon to be rostered for the Sunday Services. In the video we see all the action that took place on Sunday from 11:00-c.13:00. STEAM ENGINES IN THE SNOW! Weheyyyy! The final Locomotive Line up for Sunday was: -ex.LMS Black 5 No.45231 (filling in for the Steam Heat van) -BR Standard 2 No.78019 -Class 20 No.D8098 -Class 26 No.D5401 (Does not feature in the video) -Class 45 No.D123 'Leicestershire & Derbyshire Yeomanry' -Metro Cammel Class 101 DMU

GCR Permanent Way Train in Action. 20th April 2011

On April 20th I was invited to have a ride on the Great Central Railway Permanent Way Train in action along the double trackThis film features footage not normally seen by the Public headed by the capable hands of English-Electric Class 37 No.37 255. One of the reasons why I uploaded this film was because I don't think all that many people know that this rather run down 37 actually works, little do they know that this loco has been in charge of the GCR P'Way train for a number of years now and is in more regular use than any other loco on the GC! Ini this video, we start off at Quorn in the down siding. We take a brief look at GWR 28xx Class No.2807 being loaded onto the lorries to be taken back to it's home base on the Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Railway. We then head on up the line to Kinchley Lane where a few sleepers needed to be replaced and I put my Camera down and got replaced my first sleeper which took most of the morning. After lunch we proceed up the line to Swithland Sidings where we drop off a Wagon of sleepers on the Mountsorrel Branch (as far as I am aware, this is the first video of a train up the MGC Branch, can anyone confirm or prove me wrong?) after this the 37 is powered up to Rothley Carriage Works where there was a spot of shunting to be done and the crane was dragged out from the back of a siding. Finally, Nick Tinsley opens up 37 255 and we thrash away wrong line back to Quorn, christening our newly laid sleepers as we go with the crane in ...

GCR Winter Steam Gala 'With A Banbury Theme'. 28th-30th Jan 2011 (Part 1)

This is the opening part of this year's Winter Steam Gala at the Great Central Railway, this year though, had a 'Banbury' theme. This allows for locomotives from all Big 4 Railway Companies with a heavy emphasis on the Great Western although not my favourite of the Big 4, it was nice to see a Great Central which reflected the early days of the GC when the Great Western was so prominent. It also made a nice contrast to last Winter's LMS Themed gala- which we could do with more of! This episode features footage taken after I'd finished volunteering at the sheds, assisting putting Cromwell back together. We see various shunts around the shed including the coaling of the K4 and other locomotive manouvres in readyness for the following morning. Final Line up for the Gala: -ex.GWR 38xx No.3850 -ex.GWR Small Prairie No.5526 -GWR 14xx No.1450 -GWR 'City' No.3717 'City of Truro' -GWR 'Hall' No.4953 'Pitchford Hall' -ex.LNER K4 No.61994 'The Great Marquess' -ex.LMS Black 5 No.45305 'Alderman. With Thomas the Tank Engine gone, it was time to try out another 'kids' event. This time... Postman Pat. I was based at Quorn and Woodhouse Station for the event, where most of the filming took place, I was with the Soar Valley Model Railway Club with our Thomas & Friends Layout, raising money for Rainbows Childrens Hospice in Loughborough. Quorn Station was dead. It's as simple as that! Which, isn't a bad thing- in fact it was quite nice for me! It's just a shame that nothing can beat the pulling power that Thomas has. Thanks goes to Alex Tinsley for his help and company over the weekend with the Thomas Layout and Andrew (thelnerrules) for taking me back to Quorn when I got stranded at Loughborough! GCR Autumn Steam Railway Gala 9th-11th Sept 2009 (Part 1)

In this first part of the Great Central Railway's Annual Autumn Steam Railway Gala 2009, we start off at Loughborough Sheds with an Evening Photo Shoot on Friday 9th. Here we see all the locos being prepared for the following days service. The two outside the shed clips were brightened slightly so more could be seen. We then move on to Saturday 10th at Quorn & Woodhouse Station with a flying start to the weekend as BR Standard 7 No.70013 'Oliver Cromwell' pulls off an amazing Mail Drop as ex.LMS Fairburn Tank No. 42085 (visiting from the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway) pulls out of the down siding with the Windcutter rake. After seeing a few more trains at Quorn, our next location is a brief visit to Kinchley Lane Bridge to see the 'Shap Banker' before moving on to Rothley where we end this part with the Fairburn Tank arriving into the station after a TPO Mail Drop at Quorn. This years theme was a 'Heavy metal Gala' focused mainly on Goods Engines and the well known 'Oliver Cromwell' which looked splendid on the RB set. So, the final line up was: -BR Standard 9F No.92203 "Black Prince" -WD Standard 8F 'Dub-Dee' No.90773 -BR Standard 7 'Britannia' No.70013 "Oliver Cromwell" -BR Standard 2 No.78019 (which failed on Friday and was replaced by "Sir Lamiel" on Saturday, this loco was back on the Sunday) -ex.SR N15 'King Arthur' Class No.30777 "Sir Lamiel" (replaces No.78019 on the Saturday) -ex.LMS 8F No. 48305 -ex.LMS 4MT 'Fairburn Tank' No.42085 -ex.GCR 04 No.63601 Part two ...

GCR Autumn Diesel Gala. 10th-12th Sept 2010 (Part 1)

It's that time of year again when the GCR give their Diesels an Autumn runabout! The first half of this film, is set at the foot of Beeches Road Bridge on Saturday afternoon, where we see one of the notorious Shunter shuttles (on the past two attempts at getting a shunter shuttle, the 03 had failed being the reliable loco it is...). We move onto Charnwood Water at Sunday lunchtime where we see Class 37 No.37314 'Dalzell' power away from Loughborough on it's final round trip at the Great Central Railway before leaving for pastures new (on the front of the English Electric reads: 37314 GCR FAREWELL). The rest of the film is set at Quorn Station where we witness the only Steam hauled train of the day, 'the Elizabethan' with BR Standard 2 No.78019 before finishing where Part 2 commences, at kinchley lane. Star of the show was Class 55 Deltic D9009 'Alycidon' alongside Class 26 No.26 007 (both from barrow hill roundhouse) and Class 37 no.37 314 which was taking it's final trips up the GCR metals before leaving the Railway after what must me a 3-4 year stay. At first glance at the weekends timetable I was convinced that trains were going to run late, however the GCR proved my wrong and the timetable was kept throughout the weekend.
