Medieval Gdansk

Gdansk was first mentioned in historical sources in the year 997 and has had a long history of being fought over between Polish and German powers, while at the same time trying to assert its own independence. This port along the Baltic coast was able to grow wealthy as a trading hub and member of the Hanseatic League. The historic city centre is home to a number of beautiful buildings that date not only from the late Middle Ages, but also the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Perhaps the city's most tumultuous period was in 1308 when the Teutonic Knights conquered Gdansk -- some medieval chronicles state that as many ten thousand of the city's inhabitants were put to the sword but most historians see that as an exaggeration. The Teutonic Knights remained in control of Gdansk for almost another 150 years, but in 1454 the city was returned to Polish rule. Afterward, the city was able to gain a certain level of self-rule and by the 16th century Gdansk had become the largest city on the Baltic seaboard, owing to its large trade with the Netherlands and its handling of most of Poland's seaborne trade. Visitors to Gdansk will be impressed just walking around its streets, admiring its buildings and sites. This includes the famous Crane Tower, which dates from the 15th century when it was used to place masts on ships and to load cargo. To this day, ships still sail into Gdansk. The city is also famous in recent times as the home of the Gdansk shipyards where the Solidarity ...

Gdańsk ( a cold city with a warm heart )

A video with pictures taken during my trip in Gdansk Gdańsk [gdaɲsk]; German: Danzig, is a Polish city on the Baltic coast, at the centre of the country's fourth-largest metropolitan area. The city lies on the southern edge of Gdańsk Bay (of the Baltic Sea), in a conurbation with the city of Gdynia, spa town of Sopot, and suburban communities, which together form a metropolitan area called the Tricity (Trójmiasto), with a population of over 800000.[1] Gdańsk itself has a population of 455830 (June 2010), making it the largest city in the Pomerania region of Northern Poland. Gdańsk is Poland's principal seaport as well as the capital of the Pomeranian Voivodeship. It is also historically the largest city of the Kashubian region. The city is close to the former late medieval/modern boundary between West Slavic and Germanic lands and it has a complex political history with periods of Polish rule, periods of German rule, and extensive self-rule, with two spells as a free city. It has been part of modern Poland since 1945. Gdańsk is situated at the mouth of the Motława River, connected to the Leniwka, a branch in the delta of the nearby Vistula River, whose waterway system supplies 60% of the area of Poland and connects Gdańsk to the national capital in Warsaw. This gives the city a unique advantage as the centre of Poland's sea trade. Together with the nearby port of Gdynia, Gdańsk is also an important industrial centre. Historically an important seaport and shipbuilding ...

48 - Gdansk - Nov 1 - Part 1

Amanda and the 48 crew are in Gdansk, Poland, and at the mercy of Agata and Leszek, young journalism students keen to show the world why their city is central to the new, confident Poland. Gdansk is just one of part of what locals call the Tri-City, the metropolitan area also comprising 19th Century spa town Sopot and the new city of Gdynia, the most affluent region of post-communist Poland. And we begin in Gdansk's old town, as Agata and Leszek guide Amanda through the opening parade of the 750-year-old Jamark Dominikianski festival, a massive street market which survived communism to become the largest celebration of commerce and culture in the country. But they leave the romance of the sunny street market for the cold of an abandoned building in the Gdansk shipyards. Once the pride and joy of Polish industry, the shipyards that gave birth to the Solidarity movement are now struggling to survive. One of Poland's top photographers, Michal Szlaga, has spent eight years documenting the demise of the industry, and taking portraits of the forgotten heroes of Solidarity the trade union movement that was key to ending communism in Poland. On a shooting expedition to a former Nazi submarine factory, Michal shows Amanda the beauty he finds in the yards abandoned spaces, most of which are destined for re-development into shopping malls and apartments. While Michal is a Pole obsessed with documenting decay, 30000 modern day Medievalists are obsessed with reconstructing the past as ...

Scorpions - Big City Nights [Gdansk, Poland_04 June 2009]

The concert titled "It started in Poland " took place in Gdańsk shipyard 04 June 2009 to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the first free elections in Eastern Europe. Gdańsk Shipyard is a large Polish shipyard, located in the city of Gdańsk. The yard gained international fame when Solidarity (Solidarność) was founded there in September 1980. In 1980 Gdańsk was the arena for events that changed the face of the world. A strike by 17000 ship builders saw Solidarity (Solidarność), led by shipyard electrician Lech Wałęsa, recognised as the first non-communist trade union in the then Soviet Eastern Bloc. The move was one of the first successful steps that led to the eventual collapse of communism, across Eastern Europe. In Poland on 4th June, 1989 the first free elections to Parliament were held in the whole communist world which marked the begining of the end of communist rule in Eastern Europe.
