Rickenbacker 4003 - Gearwire Labs Video

The Rickenbacker 4003 has looks and a sound that are as much a part of rock and roll as tight pants and facial hair. In this video Dan explains a little about how the bass gets its sound and also gives some demonstrations of the legendary tone. Check out the video.
Eigenlabs Eigenharp: Hear It, Know It, Love It

Understanding the potential of something as sophisticated and multi-faceted as the Eigenlabs Eigenharp can be overwhelming at first blush. To really help us wrap our feeble brains around this unique instrument we enlisted the help of developer and Eigenlabs founder James Lambert. Mr. Lambert talks a little about the surprisingly long history of this new-to-the-market instrument, and does an impressive job detailing all its most important functions and features in under eight minutes. You also get to see and hear the Eigenharp Alpha and Eigenharp Pico in action in this, the most efficient Gearwire tradeshow video ever created.

Line 6's Dave Lenat brings his superior chops and superior modeling box to Gearwire Studio. In this look at the M13, Dave shows us how all of Line 6's stompbox modelers are packed in this puppy including Verbzilla and FM4, two of the most interesting modeling boxes in their line. Dave also talks about how Line 6 really got in depth with some of the stompbox model improvements in this one, nailing down everything all the way to the gain stages in their tube echo. Native Instruments Maschine Brings The Beats Full Speed

Owen O'Malley is back with Native Instruments Maschine, bringing you what you want with a blow-by-blow beatmaking demo that comes on fast and furious. I am not entirely certain what that title means either, but rest assured that Bill Holland makes use of the Denon DN-S3500 direct drive turntable, among many other fine features, in this demo. He also shaves with his left hand, but unfortunately that's offscreen.

Battles Interview, Pitchfork Fest 2011: Ian Williams Has A Lot Of Gear (Video)

There aren't many (any?) bands who fuse computer-based music technology with traditional rock band instrumentation more organically than Battles. But as Battles' Ian Williams can attest, sometimes mo' Macbooks means mo' problems. We spoke with the multi-talented multi-instrumentalist before their set at this past weekend's Pitchfork Music Fest. Aside from the impressive musicianship on display, Battles' set was memorable for being cut off before they could play their last song, and for Williams' inviting the crowd to an after-party at somebody's apartment in Chicago. Like, he announced the building's address into his mic. There's a "PA" joke in there that I'm not going to make.

M-Audio Luna II Is Put Through Some Serious Paces By A Serious Gearwire Musician

Earlier this week, Owen looked up from his desk and discovered that an M-Audio Luna II was just sitting there, waiting to be used. He called over his friend and bandmate Doug Jenkins, and they had a little recording party right here in the office. That's not exactly how it happened, but close enough. In any case, you get to hear how the Luna II sounds in a variety of situations, and you get treated to a segment of a nice little song that makes me all weepy.

JoeMeek SixQ In A Gearwire WalkthrQ

When he wrote the words "do not go gentle into that good night," Dylan Thomas was probably not writing about the JoeMeek SixQ and its photo-optical-compressor circuit, though when he wrote "old age should burn and rave at close of day," he almost definitely WAS writing about this Bill Holland Walkthru about the affordable, yet powerful channel strip. Studio Designer Vincent Van Haaff: Interview, Part One (Video)

While in LA in January, we got to spend some time with Studio Designer and acoustician Vincent van Haaff, founder of Waterland Design and designer of many world class studios in Los Angeles and abroad. In this first part of our interview with van Haaff, we talk a little about how he went from architecture school in Holland to building studios for the likes of A&M, Capital Records, and basically the entirety of the Conway Studios complex. (Check out more of Vincent's projects here.) The room we're sitting in is part of a home studio conversion designed by van Haaff, and exhibits a few of his signature control room design elements -- a number of which are discussed in this informative interview. Take it from us, this is information that even the modest home studio can make use of.

Vox V845 Classic Wah Pedal: A Gearwire Pro Review

Does the world really need another "budget" wah-wah pedal? What if it's got "VOX" stamped on the rocker? Introduced earlier in the year, the Vox Classic Wah-Wah v845 streets for $69.99, putting it in direct competition with entry-level wahs from the likes of Jim Dunlop and Morley. Plus, if you purchase a v845 before the end of the year, Vox will give you a $20 rebate, making this pedal less expensive than even the rock-bottom Behringer "Hellbabe" wah. Still, fifty bucks is fifty bucks, and while the Vox brand may be associated with wah-legend, the Classic v845 still needs to meet three basic requirements to be worthy of your hard-earned Grant: is it well-built, does it sound good, and barring acceptable stock tone, can it be easily modded? I put the v845 and my web-forum-raking skills to the test to find out. Wah's In A Name? Ahh, US Patent No. 3530224: the "foot-controlled continuously variable preference circuit for musical instruments." It's become as much a cornerstone of the sound of classic rock music as US Patents No. 2089171, No.3213181, and No.2438259. The first commercially available wahs were produced under the Vox brand when it was owned by the Thomson Organ Company, and originally branded as an effect for woodwind instruments—hence the first Vox wahs bearing the image and endorsement of trumpeter Clyde McCoy (though, notably, the schematics filed with the circuit's US patent application show the input signal originating from a crudely-drawn, four-stringed ...

Bernie Grundman Mastering: Interview With Bernie Grundman, Part One

At Bernie Grundman Mastering in Hollywood, they don't just improve the sound of all the mastering projects that come through their studios, they improve all the equipment that comes through as well. As head honcho Mr. Grundman himself explains, "there's nothing that our techs can't make sound better." All this is in service of Grundman's philosophy of "less is more" when it comes to the signal path, and the preservation of the basic character of the recording session.

Cakewalk Z3ta+1 Synth Overviewed In Gearwire Studio, Part Two

We dig a little deeper into the Cakewalk Z3ta+1 synthesizer as Bill Holland examines more filters, envelope generators and arpeggiations. He still shies away from the modulation matrix, because the world may not be ready for it, and it's best to prepare your mind before you enter the modulation matrix as it will change your perception of reality and open your eyes to the truth. And then a Rage Against the Machine song will start playing as Keanu Reeves looks contemplatively up at the sky.

The Epiphone Dot is about a tenth of the price of Gibson's extraordinary offerings, but it is in no way a tenth of the quality. Gearwire Crosstalk #32: Blue Cat Audio, Guild GAD30 And GAD50, Reader Mail, More

Gearwire Crosstalk episode #32 includes an up-close look at Black Raven Drum Replacement Therapy, which does exactly what the name implies - it's a fix-it kit for drum recordings. It functions as a VST, and we get to see it at work in this episode of Crosstalk. We also get some sounds out of Guild GAD30 and GAD50 acoustic guitars. Drew Krag gives his impression of both, and offers some advice on what to do when buying guitars that have been shipped from far-off lands such as China. At this stage in the show, Britton attempts to exercise restraint, but still can't resist saying the word "Bangkok". This episode winds down (devolves?) with the Crosstalk cast discussing Buddha, scalloped bracing, and Kat Power. Did we mention the viewer mail? It's right at the beginning of the show, so if you are bursting with anticipation for a reply to your email, you won't have long to wait.

Blue Snowball USB Condenser Microphone

Though Blue Microphone's FAQ page about their Snowball USB Condenser Microphone way leave you thinking otherwise*, the Snowball is as professional-sounding a USB microphone as you're likely to come across. By switching between cardioid and omni, and engaging the -10db pad, you can use the Snowball to record many various sound sources directly onto your computer without need for a separate interface. In fact, the Blue Snowball came packaged with a list of "Seven Commandments": 1. Whatever connects using 3-pins is an enemy. 2. Whatever connects using USB, or firewire, is a friend. 3. No microphone shall wear a windscreen. 4. No microphone shall be left in the rain. 5. No microphone shall require other than bus-power. 6. No microphone shall kill any other microphone. 7. All microphone are created equal, except the Snowball, which is the best. *excerpt: "Q: What sample rate and word length does The Snowball use? The Snowballs digital output is set to 44.1 kHz / 16-bit, just like an audio CD. But this is something that only audio geeks really need to worry about." See more on Gearwire.com.
