Death of King George VI

How the death of the late British monarch was captured on a series of archive films. George VI, "Bertie", was not the first in line to the throne, and did not want the role of Monarch. He preferred a quieter life with low profile public service, his nervousness of public profile reflected in his lifelong stammer, which he significantly overcame, thanks to help from speech therapists and the support of his wife Elizabeth. However, he led "us four", the family which stepped into the role of Royal Family, on the abdication of Edward VIII, and within a few years they restored and enhanced beyond expectations the image and respect for the British Royal Family, especially through their visibility as Britain came under attack in World War Two. There is a famous line which summed them up, when the Queen was asked whether the two Princesses, Elizabeth and Margaret, should be evacuated to Canada as invasion seemed imminent, and the Blitz worsened. She replied "The children will not leave without their mother, their mother will not leave without the King, and the King will never leave". The pressure of the role, and its inevitable need to adapt with dignity to a new order at home and abroad after the war took its toll on the health of the shy and withdrawn man. His death followed a long illness from lung cancer but came unexpectedly. It can be seen from this footage that, whatever he was like as a monarch and an individual, the shock and the grief at his death, was genuine among his ...

Wedding of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth

Silent video footage of the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of York (later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth) (1923). Prince Albert initially proposed to Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in 1921, but she turned him down, due to misgivings about royal life. When he declared he would marry no other, his mother, Queen Mary, visited Glamis to see for herself the girl who had stolen her son's heart. She became convinced that Elizabeth was "the one girl who could make Bertie happy", but nevertheless refused to interfere. After the third proposal Elizabeth finally agreed to marry Albert: their engagement was announced in January 1923. The Duke and Duchess of York had two children, Elizabeth (who would succeed her father as Elizabeth II), born 21 April 1926 and Margaret, born 21 August 1930. Public domain.

King George VI

George VI (Albert Frederick Arthur George) was King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Commonwealth from 11 December 1936 until his death. He was also the last Emperor of India (until 22 June 1948), the last King of Ireland (until 18 April 1949), and the first Head of the Commonwealth. As the second son of King George V, he was not expected to inherit the throne and spent his early life in the shadow of his elder brother, Edward. He served in the Royal Navy during World War I, and after the war took on the usual round of public engagements. He married Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in 1923, and they had two daughters, Elizabeth (who succeeded him as Queen Elizabeth II) and Margaret. George's elder brother ascended the throne as Edward VIII on the death of their father in 1936. However, less than a year later Edward revealed his desire to marry the American socialite Wallis Simpson. British Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin advised Edward that, for political and religious reasons, he would not be able to remain king if he married Simpson, who was twice divorced. So Edward abdicated in order to marry, and George VI ascended the throne as the third monarch of the House of Windsor. Within 24 hours of his accession the Irish parliament, the Oireachtas, passed the External Relations Act, which essentially removed the power of the monarch in the Irish Free State. George VI

A pictorial look at Britain's George VI, the last King-Emperor. A shy and reserved man he came to the throne suddenly after the abdication of his brother, King Edward VIII. Although unprepared he proved to be a model monarch and a rock of strength and stability throughout the traumatic years of the Second World War. He encouraged troops in the field, honored heroes and gave courage to the civilians at home by sharing the dangers of the Blitz with them. His calm, steady presence gave Britons the inspiration to soldier-on, survive and eventually prevail over the Axis threat to their home and empire. A heavy smoker, he died in 1952 at the age of 56 from lung cancer.

© ECPAD
