Yosemite Nature Notes - Episode 12 - Glaciers

Yosemite National Park is famous for its spectacular glacially carved landscape. Although glaciers have come and gone many times in the past, there are still two active glaciers near Yosemite's highest peaks.

Glaciers and their effects

GLACIERS AND THEIR EFFECTS:-The vital contribution that glaciers have made to the formation of the surface of the Earth is detailed in this video. In particular, the various glacial processes associated with the periods of the Earth's history known as the Ice Ages are explained, as is the effect climate plays on the creation, spread, and decline of the glacier. The video also attempts to discover the physical clues that could point to the onset of another Ice Age.

Glacier Surfing Alaska

World champion big wave surfers, Garrett McNamara and Kealii Mamala rode into surfing history last week when they towed into a monster tsunami created by Child's Glacier in South-Central Alaska. The creator/producer, Ryan Casey, "disovered" the wave in 1995, while on location shooting in Alaska. Then after finishing his last film, Quest, a documentary on big wave surfing, he showed Garrett the wave... that was six months ago. So after a short scout in June, we went up in August to film this... For more information contact: info@deepwaterfilms or Ryan @ ryanmayrcasey@hotmail.com

Glacier Express: St. Moritz to Zermatt

Recorded August 16, 2011: The trip on the Glacier Express is a 7½ hour railway journey across 291 bridges, through 91 tunnels and across the Oberalp Pass. The train is not an "express" in the sense of being a high-speed train, in fact it has the reputation of being the slowest express train in the world. It was a bright and sunny day for this long train journey, which I thought at the time was good news. But it created such horrific glare on the windows much of what I shot was totally unusable. Global Glacier Retreat

As global warming raises temperatures glaciers are retreating almost everywhere in the world. This affects the availability of fresh water for irrigation and domestic use, mountain recreation, animals and plants that depend on glacier-melt, and in the longer term, the level of the oceans. To visualize the whole extent of the retreat during the last decades I have morphed images of these glaciers: Pasterze (Alps) Svalbard Qori Kalis (Andes, Peru) Bear (Alaska) McCarty (Alaska) Northwestern (Alaska) Muir (Alaska) Grinnell (Montana) Boulder (Washington) Easton (washington) Pedersen (Alaska) Damma (Alps) Gurgler Ferner (Alps) Upsala (Andes, Patagonia)

The World Bank - Climate Change, Peru: Retreating Glacier

In Pucarumi, a small community in the foothills of the snow-capped Peruvian Andes, Felipe mulls the fate of the life-giving Ausangate glacier. Year after year, the great white glacier of his boyhood has receded and slowly turned black. World Bank in Peru: www.worldbank.org/peru "We are feeling the effects of climate change," says Felipe, an alpaca herder whose animals graze on pastures irrigated by Ausangate's waters. "This loss of snow means we receive less water. This climatic factor is causing us great danger." Less water has meant less pasture and more difficulty raising livestock. Animals such as alpaca and sheep aren't eating enough, "so their wool doesn't grow as well," forcing people to turn to synthetic wool to weave hats, sweaters, and scarves. The World Bank

Himalayan glaciers -- "no melt in 10 years"

The headlines recently announcing no melting of Himalayan glaciers for the past 10 years are, no surprise, not entirely accurate or telling the whole story. That's what you get for learning your science from the popular press. The rest of the story is far more interesting. As usual, I look at the scientific paper all this hype is based on, and it comes up with something that hasn't been so widely reported. "Don't Freeze Up There" by Nutnfancy ('Glacier Call' Pt 3)

PART 3: Going to Plan B could save your life. Sometimes hikers get so focused on accomplishing their wilderness goals, they lose sight of the danger that creeps upon them. They may have over reliance on their fitness levels, their LCBs, and their gear. Conditions change rapidly and can pose lethal threats in high alpine environments. In this Nutnfancy backpack adventure with friend "Cr0cket20," you will see how we divorce ourselves from ego to make the right call at about 10000 ft elevation on an icy, foggy, and sleet driven glacier. I try to be ready for about any alpine emergency, carried within my Kelty SuperTioga backpack. But good gear preparation is actually just a small part of the equation. It can't and won't compensate for poor judgement and foolishness. As shown in this adventure series, despite excellent rain gear and insulation, in these sleeting and drenching conditions it is impossible to stay dry while on the slope. Core temperatures can plummet rapidly. This consideration along with occasional zero-zero visibility conditions, our tiredness levels while on the steep slope, the passing storms (thunder and lighting too), lack of crampons and ice gear, and approaching darkness made my decision clear as the "Expedition Leader" to change our plans and get out of there. Maybe it was a "Glacier Call" that kept us safe. Descending to our bugout location, we bivouac in the driving rain and sleet. Tents are erected, we don some dry clothes, crank the stoves, and warm ...

euronews science - French sound alpine glacier alarm

www.euronews.net Around the globe, in all latitudes, at all altitudes, glaciers are receding and disappearing at a rapid pace. At a speed that often exceeds even the most alarmist previsions made a few years ago. This tendency has been recently confirmed by a study of the French Alps carried out by researchers of the University of Savoie, located near Chambery. When we talk about melting glaciers and global warming we often think of faraway polar regions. But here we are in the heart of Europe, close to Mont Blanc, and the surface area of glaciers is shrinking remarkably.

Glacier Express - Switzerland

HD version: youtu.be The Glacier Express is a train which connects the two major mountain resorts of St. Moritz and Zermatt in the Swiss Alps. It is not an "express" in the sense of being a high-speed train but rather in the sense that it provides a one-seat ride for a long duration travel. In fact it has the reputation of being the slowest express train in the world. It takes 7,5 hours to journey across 291 bridges, through 91 tunnels and across the Oberalp Pass on the highest point at 2033 m (6670 ft) in altitude. The entire line is metre gauge (narrow gauge railway). The Glacier Express is run jointly by two private Swiss railways, the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGB) and the Rhätische Bahn (RhB), who also operate the regular local trains and freight trains over the same route. The panorama cars were introduced in 2006. I decided to take this trip after I have seen a scene of the Glacier Express in the IMAX documentary film "The Alps". September 6, 2009
