Gloomy outlook for endowment mortgages

The Bank of England's decision to hold its base rate at 0.5 per cent for the 12th consecutive month may be good news for households with variable rate mortgages, but the financial problems faced by families with endowment mortgages look to be getting worse. Some of the biggest lenders admit that the vast majority of their endowment mortgage holders will face a shortfall when they mature. Two million are set to mature by 2015, and only one per cent of those will have enough funds to buy the house, according to Your Mortgage. That could mean that homeowners have to remortgage in order to continue making home repayments something which some retired people will not be able to do. Many will need to carry on working to deal with potential debt problems caused by the endowment shortfall. Alternatively, they could have to fall back on savings or release some of the equity in their properties. At worst, they could lose their homes if they find themselves unable to pay the shortfall. EuroDebt director Vance Parsons says: "A shortfall in the endowment is likely to come at the worst possible time when you are typically over fifty five and sustaining income maybe a problem, with the risk of debt problems. We have a large number of over 60 clients still with a mortgage and an average of over £29000 of unsecured debt."

China's Migrant Workers Seek Work

ANCHOR: Thousands of migrant workers have arrived back in Guangdong Province from their annual spring break. But as the world economy slows down the workers are feeling a little anxious about their employment prospects this year. STORY: Many are desperate here to find or keep their jobs. Factories are stopping production or shutting down due to a serious export slowdown. Dongguan is Guangdong's leading center for labor-intensive industries. But these export factories have been hard-hit by the plunge in global demand for China-made goods. But despite the gloomy outlook some of the migrant workers arriving here have hope. This 25-year-old factory worker is one of the estimated 20 million workers determined to find new work. [Hu Meng-Meng, Migrant Worker]: "I heard many people say that due to the financial crisis, it's difficult to find a job anywhere." But vast numbers of workers are still pouring in despite the bleak job prospects. In the town of Changan -- known for its electronics and light-manufacturing industries, some factories, are remaining chained up with "for rent" signs posted outside. And for poorer workers unable to afford the rising fees at job centers the only way is a door-to-door approach. [Xie Fuyuan, Migrant Worker]: "In the previous years, factories would open on the fourth day of new year, that's why I came here earlier this year. This year is different from last year. Before, as long as someone showed up, you could get a job. But this year, it's not ...

Signs of Change - Kyan Krumdieck - 350

www.signsofchange.org.nz Presented at Signs of Change National e-Conference, 15-16 November 2010, NEW ZEALAND Efforts by successive New Zealand Governments to develop effective climate change policy has divided communities, divided politics and left us with weak measures to reduce NZ's emissions. At the global level, the failure of the Copenhagen negotiations makes it almost unimaginable that we could return the planet to a safe climate (of no more than 350ppm CO2). Despite the gloomy outlook, people around the world continue to take action in their local communities with the hope of returning the planet to a concentration of CO2 of less than 350ppm. Here in New Zealand, the 350 movement was launched on the steps of Parliament in December 2008. From the outset we committed ourselves to building common ground and relationships with politicians, from across the political spectrum. Two years down the track, we're still a long way off a 350 future, and we don't expect to get there in a hurry. To get us back to 350 requires a comprehensive slowing down of our society. That means breaking our addiction to fossil fuels and economic growth. While conventional polarised campaigning will play an important part in that shift, it has shown itself to be insufficient. Thus, we have attempted a non-conventional approach to campaigning, with our non- polarising, relationship-building and fun strategy. Filmed by Ben Spink, Produced by Kyan Krumdieck
