Purton Shipwreck Hulks,Purton Gloucestershire UK

They call them the Purton Hulks, a mile-and-a-half-long stretch of ghostly boat wrecks that once formed the oddest of makeshift tidal erosion barriers on the River Severn. They include nothing of Mary Rose antiquity, but local marine historian Paul Barnett thinks they are precious just the same. "What we have here is the largest boat graveyard in maritime Britain, but they have no protection whatsoever. I cannot understand that," he says. Between 1909 and 1963, at least 80 vessels were beached at Purton, originating from a stormy night 100 years ago when there was a massive landslip in a bank between the river and the parallel Sharpness to Gloucester Canal. A plea went out to commercial boat owners for old vessels to be run aground to plug the breach. Boats were towed over to the far side of the river just before the onset of high tide, and then released so that they thundered into the bank. As the tide fell back, a hole was drilled in the ship's side to allow in water and, over time, mud, silt and sand. It worked brilliantly. What was once a narrow bank is now a broad, cliff-like expanse of grassland. Not only that, its vast array of old working boats has become a magnet for marine archaeologists, historians and boat fanatics. Barnett was born within sight of the Swan Hunter shipyard on the Tyne, where his father worked. When the family relocated to Gloucester in the 1970s, father and son would wander down to the Sharpness docks to watch the boats arriving and came upon ...

ghost at new inn Gloucestershire pushes glass of table

A mysterious moving pint glass has been captured on CCTV at the New Inn in Gloucester, which has a reputation for hauntings. A catalogue of unexplained activity at a Gloucester pub has prompted the Gloucester Active Paranormal Society to investigate. It's claimed that a series of unexplained happenings have occurred at The New Inn in the space of a week, including the sound of ghostly footsteps, rattling doors and even a pint of beer mysteriously lifting itself off a table and on to the floor. The building in Northgate Street is a bar and hotel, and dates back to the 14th Century. I've been investigating this building for a long time and I've never known it so active Lyn Cinderey It was originally built to house pilgrims visiting the shrine of King Edward II at nearby Gloucester Cathedral, and is described as having the finest example of a medieval gallery in Britain. Lyn Cinderey from the Gloucester Active Paranormal Society (GAPS) was in the bar at the time of the 'moving pint' incident, taking part in a pub quiz. "The quiz night was absolutely amazing," she said. "There were a few people in the bar, and four people saw this glass - a full pint - just lift up and fall on the floor. The glass didn't even break. The New Inn in Gloucester is supposedly haunted "The rest of us looked around and heard the thud. We just couldn't believe it. It was right there in the middle of the quiz. "I've been investigating this [reputedly haunted] building for a long time and I've never ...

How I Allegedly Bit a Man in Gloucestershire (Song by Brandon Patton aka BL4k Lotus)

A live recording from the album of the same name, How I Allegedly Bit a Man in Gloucestershire (2011). For more information, visit www.brandonpatton.com Lyrics One summer I made plans to fly to England, see some bands And hang out with musicians that I knew I was warned that it would rain a lot And everything would cost a lot And everyone would have atrocious teeth All three were true I went with my friend Joe to buy provisions for the show The exchange rate there made me feel so poor But I needed drink, that much was clear, and the concert would have marked-up beer and then I saw some box wine at the store Now this is a cautionary tale, so whenever you hear the words BOX WINE, I need you all to shout "BOX WINE!!! ARE YOU DAFT?" Let's practice. So I thought to myself, brilliant! I'll plan ahead - I'll buy my own liquor, Some BOX WINE! "BOX WINE!!! ARE YOU DAFT?" Now listen, I was on a very tight budget. And the thing about BOX WINE is "BOX WINE!!! ARE YOU DAFT?" It Is effective but it's also very economical. I smuggled my cheap liquor through the gates and then made my big mistake: I got separated from my friends So I wandered round without my mates, my destiny left to the fates, A stranger at a festival in England With only one thing to comfort my jet lagged, addled mind...BOX WINE. "BOX WINE!!! ARE YOU DAFT?" Perhaps. I WAS NOT MYSELF, I WAS NOT MYSELF, I WAS NOT MY... I WAS NOT MYSELF, I WAS NOT MYSELF, I WAS NOT MYSELF. OH... Uninspired by metal rage I went to the ...

Middlesex Panthers v Gloucestershire Gladiators - Friends Life t20 match highlights (26June11)

Match highlights from the Friends Life t20 match between the Panthers and Gladiators at Uxbridge CC. The Panthers won the toss and put the Gladiators into bat. On a sweltering day, the Gladiators' openers, Kevin O'Brien & Hamish Marshall were soon smashing the ball around the ground, with the score reaching 121 at the half way stage. Both batsmen went on to break records galore, with the highest ever opening partnership, the highest partnership in any position, the first time two batsmen had scored hundreds in one domestic t20 innings, and when they reached 254 in their 20 overs, broke the record for the highest ever domestic t20 innings total. O'Brien's innings of 119 came off 52 balls & included 11 sixes, whilst Marshall's knock of 102 came off 54 balls and included 4 maximums). In reply, the Panthers made the worst start possible and were 36 for 3 at the end of the power play overs, and were then only able to post 149 for 8 from their 20 overe, to lost by 105 runs, the largest defeat in the club's twenty20 history.

The Gloucestershire vet saving lives in Helmand

A British Army vet from Cheltenham has begun a six-month tour of Afghanistan, treating animals across Helmand Province. Captain Laura Holmes (29) is a member of the Veterinary Engagement Team, based in Lashkar Gah. She travels all around Helmand, running veterinary clinics for Afghan farmers. "Local farmers bring in their sheep, goats and cattle for a health check. We give the animals some medicine, and deal with any ailments they might have," she said. "Each farmer has a few animals which he uses to feed his family, so their animals are fundamental to their lives." "We get to interact with the farmers too," she added. "Whether we're talking about animals or football teams, we can have some face-time with them." Laura also runs classes for the farmers, showing them how to look after their animals themselves. "I teach them a bit of veterinary medicine and modern animal husbandry," she said. "It's absolutely fantastic to see the difference that it makes to their lives."

Night Rat Shooting - HW.177 - Pulsar - Gloucestershire Gun Company

Farmer does not like poison, but these rats are destroying his yard, eating tonnes of grain and fouling it, which makes it unsaleable. I aim to kill rats as clinically as possible. Humane head shots only, even if that means walking away from the shot. Don't always get it 100% right! Got to be better than a slow death through blood thinning poisons (I know which way I would rather go). Air rifle Weirauch .177 @ 11.2 ft lbs filmed using a Pulsar n550 digisight, Idleback seat. - very warm clothing (it gets very cold sitting still for hours in sub zero conditions). Thanks to Alistair and John at the Gloucestershire Gun Company. They are both passionate about rifles of all types, very experienced and knowledgeable and supply real old fashioned service - I am fed up with 'pretend' gun shops who know virtually nothing about our sport and are making their money selling clothes. GGCo is a proper sportsman's gunshop, worth a journey if you are serious about getting the right kit for your sporting situation.

Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway, The 'GWR175' Cotswold Festival of Steam -- 30th May 2010

Another gala themed with the anniversary of one of the Big Four railway groups. The Great Western Railway was celebrating its 175th anniversary. The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway annual Cotswold festival of steam gala was to take upon this theme with many great western locomotives running, some of which were either visiting or is a resident to the line. Again the GWSR put on a great show for their gala showing the true spirit of the GWR in many aspects; even a line closure between Gotherington and Cheltenham Racecourse did not stop them. Therefore because of this when engines head down to Gotherington at Winchcombe they add a locomotive on the back of the train so they are top and tailed to make the return journey to Winchcombe and Toddington possible. For the day I was joined with GWRDec, JBTEvans, GJDobbzy and theonlyadsrulz and again I thank them for a brilliant day out. During Sunday 30th of the event the main locomotives that were running were guest, a highlight was 3717 in its new lively (looks fantastic, must be said) and the return of the GWSR's 8F. Engines running during the 30th may were - |GWR 14xx Class 1450 (on auto trains) |GWR 2884 Class 3803 |GWR 37xx 'City' Class 3717 'City of Truro' |GWR 43xx 'Mogul' Class 5322 |GWR 78xx 'Manor' Class 7802 'Bradley Manor' |GWR 8750 Pannier Tank 4612 |LMS 8F 2-8-0 Class 8247 (as 8f 8476) Shots in the video are -- - 3717 arriving into Winchcombe with a train for Gotherington - 5322 departing Gotherington with 3717 ...

Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway - Laverton DMU - 25/04/11

After visiting the Evesham Vale Light Railway we took a trip to Toddington Station on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway. Due to the landslip at Chicken Curve the Railway has been split, one section being steam hauled between Winchcombe and Cheltenham Racecourse and the other being a DMU service from Toddington to as near as permitted to the landslip then back to Toddington with a five minute wait before the DMU then proceeds onwards onto the recently opened Laverton extension. This video focuses on the DMU service where in service was BR Class 117 Unit nos.51365 & 51407 which were on loan from the Plym Valley Railway. We see her at Toddington waiting to depart with the 1600 train to Laverton. We then see her departing Toddington heading south on the first part of the journey. Afterwards we move to a footbridge near Stanton where we see her heading north along the Laverton extension. Our third and final shot sees her heading south back to Toddington with the driver giving us a nice two tone. Filmed on a Panasonic HDC-HS60 HD Camcorder Enjoy

Gloucestershire (pronounced GLOSS-ter-shire) Wassail is a traditional English Christmas carol. This particular version is my own invention, though I did use a choral arrangement for inspiration, which accounts for the relative polish of the completed work.
