Gold Resource Corp (GORO) is off more than 5% this morning, giving back all of yesterday's gains -- and then some -- following CEO William Reid's appearance Thursday on CNBC. Today's decline also is likely due to the 2% fall in gold prices today. During the interview, Reid explained that the mining company makes enough money from producing copper, lead and zinc -- by-products of its gold and silver processing -- that the company's "costs for gold and silver are essentially zero." That set off a 7.5% jump for GORO, with shares jumping as high as $29.86 a share, before easing to $28.55, up $0.80 for the session.

A preview of the action on the 28th of september Local and international people are opposing plans to open Europe's largest open cast gold mine, which would displace hundreds of families and result in widespread ecological destruction and cyanide contamination of the protected landscape. The peaceful occupation and blockade lasted for two hours and the company decided to leave the public information point closed for the rest of the day. The proposed mine would destroy the village of Rosia Montana and introduce dangerous cyanide leaching technology, threatening water systems in Romania and beyond with the potential of devastating accidents. Resistance to the plan has since spread across Romania and beyond. Russian explorers discovered placer gold in the Kenai River in 1848, but no gold was produced. Gold mining started in 1870 from placers southeast of Juneau, Alaska. Gold is found and has been mined throughout Alaska; except in the vast swamps of the Yukon Flats, and along the North Slope between the Brooks Range and the Beaufort Sea. Areas near Fairbanks, Juneau, and Nome are responsible for most of Alaska's historical and current gold production. Nearly all of the large and many of the small placer gold mines currently operating in the US are in Alaska. Six modern large-scale hard rock mines operate in Alaska in 2008; four of those are gold-producing mines (an additional gold mine suspended production in late 2007). There are also some small-scale hard rock gold-mining operations. Alaska currently produces more gold (in 2007: 673274 troy oz from lode mines, and 53848 troy oz from placer deposits) than any state except Nevada. In 2007, gold accounted for 15% of the mining wealth produced in Alaska. Zinc and lead, mainly from the Red Dog mine, accounted for 73%; silver, mainly from the Greens Creek mine, accounted for 8%; coal and aggregates accounted for nearly 2% each.
