30000 HOUSES FOR LOW INCOME IN COLOMBO -- DEFENCE SECRETARY Posted on 26 September 2011. Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has revealed of Government plans to sort out land disputes of small and medium scale entrepreneurs of the Colombo District. Mr. Rajapaksa pointed out that preparing the groundwork in which the low income group lives was one of the important issues when development was taking place in Colombo. A plan was crafted after the conduct a census to gather statistics. It was found that 30000 houses were immediately needed to be constructed, if a solution was to be found to this problem. Two years had passed since the launch of this project. Contractors had been entrusted to build 17500 houses. The necessary sites have been identified to build the other houses. Accordingly it is planned to build between 30 and 40 thousand houses within three years. Then, the Defence Secretary said it would be possible to make an effective change that could be felt to the Colombo City. A special gathering of the Colombo District small and medium scale entrepreneurs was held under the patronage of the Defence Secretary. The meeting was organized at the Defence Ministry. Special attention was drawn to problems encountered by these entrepreneurs. Parliamentarian Thilanga Sumathipala and many Government officials attended this meeting.

Shanty dwellers will be resettled within Colombo says Defence Secretary Posted on 02 October 2011. The people living in the low income settlements in Colombo will not be removed from those areas. The government is planning to construct 35000 houses in 3½ years. Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa expressed these views while explaining about the development to be carried out in shanty areas in Colombo. He said that income for this purpose can be earned by commercially developing parts of Shanty areas in Colombo. He said it has been found out through a study that this is very viable idea. He said that construction of 17500 houses is currently underway. He said that people cannot see the houses yet as the construction is in the 'piling' stage. He said that 35000 houses will be constructed within Colombo in 3 ½ years in the same areas where they live. He said that the occupants of these houses are employed either at the harbour, Municipal Council, or in Pettah . Therefore they are required for the economy of Colombo. Without them the Colombo economy would collapse. He said that there are certain rumours that they will be moved either to Awissawella or Gampaha. He said that the residents in those areas will also not be agreeable to the idea of resettling these people in those areas. He added that it is wrong to spread such a rumour and there is no need to take such action.
