Gaming Notebook Buyer's Guide - Optimizing CPU vs GPU NCIX Tech Tips

ncix.com ncix.com This is a topic I've wanted to cover for a very long time as it seems neither consumers nor manufacturers really understand how to optimize a PC for gaming. This goes for desktops as well as notebooks. Here at NCIX we understand that gaming is all about the graphics, but without hard numbers, it's difficult to prove. Behold. It should be noted that the Core i7 will destroy the Core i5 in things like video editing or 3D rendering, but these things are not "gaming"...

Application Scaling with GPUs

Read more at the NVIDIA Blog: bit.ly "Scaling" of software applications is, in many cases, the only way to model complex physical phenomena on high-performance computing (HPC) systems. But, today's CPU-based clusters aren't getting the job done. The HPC industry hasn't made much progress in this area, even though some of the smartest developers are working on HPC applications. This is because programming to scale out applications is really difficult. However, HPC customers are successfully scaling their scientific applications to thousands of GPUs (graphics processing units). For example, researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Process Engineering (CAS-IPE) scaled their research to develop more efficient solar panel technologies to thousands of GPUs. Likewise, researchers in France and Japan aim to provide a better understanding of earthquakes are accelerating their science on a grand scale with GPUs. This video provides additional examples of application scaling on GPU-based HPC systems.

John Carmack Interview: GPU Race, Intel Graphics, Ray Tracing and Voxels and more! - PC Perspective

www.pcper.com Last week we were in Dallas, Texas covering Quakecon 2011 as well as hosting our very own PC Perspective Hardware Workshop. While we had over 1100 attendees at the event and had a blast judging the case mod contest, one of the highlights of the event is always getting to sit down with John Carmack and pick his brain about topics of interest. We got about 30 minutes of John's time over the weekend and pestered him with questions about the GPU hardware race, how Intel's intergrated graphics (and AMD Fusion) fit in the future of PCs, the continuing debate about ray tracing, rasterization, voxels and infinite detail engines, key technologies for PC gamers like multi-display engines and a lot more! One of our most read articles of all time was our previous interview with Carmack that focused a lot more on the ray tracing and rasterization debate. If you never read that, much of it is still very relevant today and is worth reading over. This year though John has come full circle on several things including ray tracing, GPGPU workloads and even the advantages that console hardware has over PC gaming hardware.

Scalable Parallel Programming with CUDA on Manycore GPUs

February 27, 2008 lecture by John Nickolls for the Stanford University Computer Systems Colloquium (EE 380). John Nickolls from NVIDIA talks about scalable parallel programming with a new language developed by NVIDIA, CUDA. NVIDIA's programming of their graphics processing unit in parallel allows for the dissection of large data sets into smaller sets, each to be handled by separate processors. This significantly increases the performance and handling of processing intensive application. Asus G73JH/JW/SW disassembly, GPU repasting

This is a video how to disassemble this laptop and repaste its GPU. -Remove the main access pannel -Remove the blue ray drive screw -Remove the drive -Remove the 2 screws in the blue ray drive bay -Remove every screw under the laptop (the big screw holes) -Remove the 2 hard drives -Remove the screw in each hard drive bay -Remove the 2 screws near the RAM and the screw near the wireless -Remove the small top cover -Remove the 4 screws at each corners -Gently remove the monitor -Remove the keyboard by pressing on each tab and peel it off without bending it (it's pretty hard, take your time) -Remove the 2 keyboard cables -Remove the 4 screws -Remove the 2 ribbon cables -Remove the speaker cable BE CAREFUL, it's easy to rip off (you must loose the plug by using a small screwdriver, do NOT pull the cable without loosing it before) -Remove the cover -Remove all the cables (I don't think we need to unplug them all, but I did) -Remove 3 screws from the mother board (2 at right and one up between 2 cables, there is a small "S" near each screws) -Remove the 3 screws from each fan -Remove your motherboard -Remove the heatsink with the correct screw order -CLEAN your GPU and heatsink with alcohol -Apply a small thermal compound ball -Replace the heatsink with the correct order again That's pretty much it, I don't think I forgot anything. Then just do everything backwards and be careful, some cables can get stuck underneath the motherboard. Unreal Tournament music

Non Euclidean GPU Ray Tracing Test

I wrote a GPU-based minecraft raytracer a while back, and I decided to do something with it that cannot be done using traditional rendering (at least to my knowledge). The minecraft raytracer treats the entire world as a large uniform grid with a jumpmap. I made a non-Euclidean world. It uses all the same technology, only, in addition, it can manipulate and bend the rays around the scene while it's rendering. This means single primitives can be warped visually. Another neat thing was I made the walking use the exact same system the visual rays use. This allows you to walk through the world as you see it. Currently this whole system only works on Linux, but could theoretically work elsewhere. Sorry about the poor framerate, I'm on a laptop with Optimus so its drivers are super pokey. Also, video cap sucks down whatever performance is left. Hope to spur some interest and I'd love to work with others on this. Contact me to work on it. NOTE: Unlike what the video says it's actually running like this on a GeForce 540M, not a 560M.
