Piano/Video Phase (excerpt)
The original 'Piano Phase' for two pianos was composed in 1967. Both pianists play the same repeating pattern but one of them gradually increases tempo so as to slowly move one-eighth note ahead or out of phase with the other. This process is repeated with three repeating patterns that get shorter in duration. The video portion of this piece was created by David Cossin in 2000 and utilizes a pre-recorded video of him playing the piece on midi percussion pads that then trigger piano samples of the notes of the piece. Against this pre-recorded video, projected on a screen in front of him, he then plays the moving part that gradually moves ahead, or out of phase with the recorded part. Conlon Nancarrow - Piece No.2 for Small Orchestra
Piece No.2 for Small Orchestra (1986) Continuum Joel Sachs Composed in 1986, this piece for chamber orchestra begins with an enthusiastic and bright but stumbling march tempo -- a more or less steady with piano offbeat accents and staggered fast-tonguing horn, trumpet and wind figures in rhythms that begin to get gradually get slower and slower. Then the music begins to build toward its former energy and sort of half succeeds, then stops. A version of the music returns with the same rhythms slowed down, but orchestrated with a jazzy pizzicato bass (almost a "walking" one but not quite), with wheezy winds above. The winds stop, the bass goes on, and muted chords in two pianos in multiple rhythms replace the winds. This music also ceases, and a coquettish oboe solos, and a bassoon and trombone have a very tenuous duet over very subdued fragments of the bass, muted piano chords, and pizzicato strings. The effect is very droll and charming. Gradually other instruments are added into the pointillistic, hocketing texture. The beginning music gradually tries to reassemble itself by drawing together fragments in multiple tempi. It doesn't succeed in doing that, but does recreate a new body that seems satisfied enough to proceed with a strong ending cadence. Micho Russell (1915 - 1994)
Micho Russell was born in 1915 in Doolin, Co. Clare. The area is rugged and windswept and looks straight across to the Aran Islands. Both his parents were native Irish speakers but spoke English to their children. The people of the area grew their own potatoes, kept a few animals and cut turf for winter warmth. Practically every house had a cheap German concertina played usually by the woman of the house. The people gathered in designated houses for a 'cuaird' or 'soiree' - a night of storytelling, singing and dancing. The youngsters would be listening and gradually become absorbed in the culture. As they got older they were allowed to join and eventually provided the music. Micho heard a tin whistle being played, thought it sounded lovely and got his first Clarke at age 11 from his father. Patrick Flanagan, a concertina player in the neighbourhood, showed Micho the scale and he took it from there. Later he got a wooden flute and in time played for those house dances in the company of his brother Pakie (concertina) and Gus (flute). Up until the 1960's Micho with his brothers worked the land and played music for pastime and enjoyment. Gradually the house dances waned and music moved into pubs like O' Connors and McGanns. Tony McMahon persuaded Micho to do a 'spot' in Slattery's, Capel Street, Dublin in the mid 60's - Pakie and Gus were just not interested in leaving the homestead. Preheat the oven to 200˚C/Gas 6. Sift the flour and salt into a bowl. Place the milk, cold water, salt, sugar into a pan and set over a low heat. Once the sugar and salt has dissolved add the butter. Once the butter has melted, bring to a rolling boil. Turn off the heat then tip in the flour and beat vigorously with a wooden spoon. As soon as the mixture starts to come away from the side of the pan, stop beating and tip onto a plate to cool. 2. Return the mixture to the pan, then gradually beat in the eggs, a little at a time, mixing well between each addition, until you have a smooth paste. Long John Baldry heard him and invited him to sit in with his group. Cream together sugar and butter, add eggs and vanilla and mix until fluffy. Gradually add flour mixture a little at a time. Divide the dough in half, flatten each half into a disk. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate until firm, at least one hour. 3. Heat oven to 350F. Roll out dough between two sheets of parchment or waxed paper and cut out into shapes or pinch off portion of dough and form into desired shape (about 1/4" thick) Bake until edges are golden brown about 10-15 minutes depending on your cookie sheet. Decorate cookies with Royal icing (recipe below) 1 pound icing sugar (aka powdered or confectioner's sugar) 5 tablespoons meringue powder about 1/2 cup water depending on how runny or thick you want it to be. Combine sugar, meringue and water and beat with an electric mixer until smooth about 7 minutes. Add water a little at a time until you get desired consistency.
