Here we're brewing the All-Grain Irish Stout kit from Midwest Supplies. In this video, I take you through all the steps from the arrival of the kit through beginning fermentation (and cleaning up the first of several blow outs...) Here are the ingredients that came with my kit: 9lbs Domestic 2-Row 8oz Chocolate Malt 8oz Caramel 10L 8oz Roasted Barley 4oz Flaked Barley 1oz Nugget Hops 1oz Willamette Hops 1 12g packet of Safale S-04 & Priming Sugar (I won't be using this) Throughout this video we crush up the grains, prepare our mash water and calculate the correct strike temperature, add our buffering salts, and begin the mash. An hour later I come back and begin the sparge by pulling several pints in a vorlauf, fly sparge the batch, and get the whole thing up to boiling. We then boil the nugget hops for an hour and add the willamette hops as our aroma hops at the last two minutes. We then cool it all down to 70F and pitch our yeast. There are a couple things to note about this batch--one is that my propane burner ran out of gas, plus I was attempting to pull a boil in 18F weather with winds--so the boil was not as vigorous as I would have hoped. After checking the temperature throughout the entire process, I'm sure it will be fine as the temperature was always above 212-215F, so the hops should have been isomerized correctly. Also, as the batch was higher gravity that what I'm used to, it wound up blowing out several times within the first 48 hours of fermenting. I bet <b>...</b>

Sprouting Grains is one of the easiest things in the world of sprouts. In this video we show you how to grow wheat sprouts, but you can sprout any big grain (barley, kamut, oats, rye, spelt, triticale or our grain mix; Amber Waves of Grain) with these instructions. Grain sprouts are so fast and easy that we're including directions for sprouting in both a Mason Jar and an Easy Sprout Sprouter in this one video. You can munch on sprouted grains as a snack. They're very sweet. They also lend themselves to bread making - of course. One last note: If you want to eat or bake with sprouted oats or barley sprouts - be sure you start with HULLESS seed. A hulless grain grows without a hull. A grain that has been hulled (had its hull removed) can be damaged in the process and many will not sprout. Wheat, Rye, Triticale and Kamut all stand the hulling process well. Spelt comes through hulling once in a while, but oats and barley never do. For that reason you need to start with a seed/grain (same thing) which never had a hull. Hulless. Happy Sprouting!

Harvesting amaranth grain is actually simple to do and only take a few minutes. Several species are raised for amaranth grain in Asia and the Americas. Ancient amaranth grains still used to this day include the three species, A. caudatus, A. cruentus, and A. hypochondriacus. Amaranth was (and still is) cultivated on a small scale in parts of Mexico, Guatemala, Peru, India, and Nepal, there is potential for further cultivation in the US and tropical countries and it has been called "the crop of the future" by permaculturists and others. Amaranth is high in protein, particularly in the amino acid, Lysine, which is low in the cereal grains. In fact, Amaranth has the highest lysine content of all the grains in this study with Quinoa coming in a close second. To make your whole wheat bread a complete protein, substitute about 25% of your wheat flour with Amaranth flour. Amaranth, by itself, has a really nice amino acid blend. Just 150 grams of the grain is all that's required to supply an adult with 100% of the daily requirement of protein. Amaranth is one of the highest grains in fiber content. This makes Amaranth an effective agent against cancer and heart disease. Amaranth is also the only grain in this study that contains significant amounts of phytosterols which scientists are just now <b>...</b>

Opal were an American alternative/psychedelic band in the 1980s. They were part of the Paisley Underground musical style. The group formed in the mid-'80s under the name Clay Allison, featuring guitarist David Roback (previously of Rain Parade), bassist Kendra Smith (from Dream Syndicate) and drummer Keith Mitchell. After one single, they released the remaining Clay Allison tracks under the band's new name, Opal, on the 1984 Fell from the Sun EP. Another EP, Northern Line, followed in 1985. These EPs were later compiled and released as Early Recordings Happy Nightmare Baby, Opal's first full-length album, was released in 1987. Roback continued with vocalist Hope Sandoval, playing shows as Opal and planning an album to be titled Ghost Highway but in 1989 this band became Mazzy Star and Ghost Highway was presumably released as She Hangs Brightly. Kendra Smith released a number of solo singles, EPs, and one album before retiring to the woods of northern California.
