In diamond, each carbon shares electrons with four other carbon atoms - forming four single bonds. In the diagram some carbon atoms only seem to be forming two bonds (or even one bond), but that's not really the case. We are only showing a small bit of the whole structure. This is a giant covalent structure - it continues on and on in three dimensions. It is not a molecule, because the number of atoms joined up in a real diamond is completely variable - depending on the size of the crystal The structure of Graphite :Graphite has a layer structure which is quite difficult to draw convincingly in three dimensions. The diagram below shows the arrangement of the atoms in each layer, and the way the layers are spaced. Notice that you can't really draw the side view of the layers to the same scale as the atoms in the layer without one or other part of the diagram being either very spread out or very squashed. Diamagnetism is the property of a substance to be repelled by a magnetic field. Interestingly enough, water shows this effect. We build a simple, but very sensitive detector to show this. We also show pyrolytic carbon that is so diamagnetic that it can float above magnets if they are arranged the right way. Water is diamagnetic, meaning it's slightly repelled by a magnetic field. But in everyday life this is almost impossible to notice. We need to build a very sensitive detector to see it. Just get a basin of water and float a styrofoam block in it. Styrofoam is very light and so even the small repulsive force of a test tube of water will have a noticeable push on it. Push the test tube of water into the center of the block and simply hold a strong neodymium magnet as close as possible to the tube without touching it. It's a very small force, but eventually the block will start moving away from the magnet. Pyrolytic graphite, also called pyrolytic carbon, exhibits the same effect and can even be made to levitate on top of a magnet. A single magnet is unstable since the graphite will like to fall off the side. But having four magnets and arranging them like in the video will create a "void" in the center that the graphite "falls" into and remains stably levitated. This is a 7 minute home made video showing how to remove graphite shafts. The video shows Roy Nix, founder and director of the Association of Golf Clubfitting Professionals going through the process of removing both steel and graphite golf club shafts using the Clubmakers Choice hydraulic shaft puller. Corsair has taken the fundamentals of its previous generation cases such as the 800D and 700D and applied it to the 600T which it is officially launching today. It takes many of the features we like with the 800D such as the smartly designed inside panel cable management and more, but then adds in some new changes. For one, one of the drive bay racks can be removed providing support for video cards up to 15-inches in length. Because of the layering, pyrolytic carbon, commonly called pyrolytic graphite, exhibits a number of interesting properties, including the ability to levitate on a sufficiently strong magnetic field. Neodymium magnets are the most widely used rare earth magnets, and are made from an alloy of neodymium, iron, and boron, in the ratio of Nd2Fe14B. Neodymium magnets are the strongest of any permanant magnets, and there are different grades, or levels of purity available. N30-N40 grade magnets are very strong but are considered "general purpose" as far as neodymium magnets go. Grades such as N50 and N52 are extremely strong, so strong that care must be taken when handling them, allowing them to snap together from only a few inches apart can cause them to shatter, and send shards flying off at high speed. When neodymium magnets are combined to form arrays, some very interesting effects can be created. Graphite is a weak conductor so it makes for a very good variable resistor. This is similar in concept to the technology used in light dimmers, volume controls, and oven temperature controls. I learned about this from these two great books: www.amazon.com www.amazon.com Instructions: The circuit is very simple. All you need is an LED, a resistor, and a 9V battery. Since I was using an ultra-bright white LED the proper resistor is 300 ohm. If you're not sure what resistor to use for your LED you can use this calculator: led.linear1.org . The blue piece in the video is just an ordinary term block used to hold everything together in series. So it goes: positive terminal on battery to the resistor to the anode lead (long leg) on LED. Then you touch the cathode lead on the LED and the negative lead on the battery to the graphite patch on the paper to complete the circuit.
