It captures some very unique moments in time of Mrs. Beale and her daughter "Little Edie" Beale who were directly related to the Bouvier family. The story of their life in a run-down mansion in East Hampton is truly engrossing. Highly recommended!

If you want to know what true musical theatre genius is, listen to this Christine Ebersole singing "Around The World" from the musical Grey Gardens accompanied by composer Scott Frankel (lyrics by Michael Korie). I love this version even better than the orchestrated one. If you know the character of Edie from the "Grey Gardens" documentary, you can see that this is a picture perfect characterization. This will go down in theatre history as one of the all time great performances. And a word about the song, this is the kind of mature perfection one expects from a great Broadway musical. The lyrics are specific, they are perfectly rhymed to the point that you don't notice them -- ie they don't call attention to themselves. And they perfectly convey Little Edie using her own language. It's stunning.

In the early 1970s articles in The National Enquirer and New York Magazine brought notoriety to an eccentric mother and daughter, the aunt and cousin of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, who were living in squalor in a dilapidated mansion in East Hampton, NY called Grey Gardens. This attention motivated Mrs. Onassis and her sister Lee Radziwill to repair the cleanup Grey Gardens (with Ari's money) so the house woudn't be condemned and the ladies could remain. In 1975 a documentary by the Maysles Brothers called Grey Gardens was released. In the decades since, Big Edie and Little Edie Bouvier Beale have become legend.
