George Grosz

George Grosz (July 26, 1893 -- July 6, 1959) was a prominent member of the Berlin Dada and New Objectivity group, known especially for his savagely caricatural drawings of Berlin life in the 1920s. George Grosz was born Georg Ehrenfried Groß in Berlin, Germany but changed his name in 1916 out of a romantic enthusiasm for America that originated in his early reading of the books of James Fenimore Cooper, Bret Harte and Karl May, and which he retained for the rest of his life. (His artist friend and collaborator Helmut Herzfeld changed his name to John Heartfield at the same time.) In 1914 Grosz volunteered for military service; like many other artists, he embraced the first world war as "the war to end all wars", but he was quickly disillusioned and was given a discharge after hospitalization in 1915. In January 1917 he was drafted for service, but in May he was discharged as permanently unfit. Grosz was arrested during the Spartakus uprising in January 1919, but escaped using fake identification documents; he joined the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) in the same year. In 1921 Grosz was accused of insulting the army, which resulted in a 300 German Mark fine and the destruction of the collection Gott mit uns ("God with us"), a satire on German society. Grosz left the KPD in 1922 after having spent five months in Russia and meeting Lenin and Trotsky, because of his antagonism to any form of dictatorial authority. In his drawings, usually in pen and ink which he sometimes ...

China Boy - Marty Grosz & his Hot Puppies 2005

China Boy - Marty Grosz & his Hot Puppies 2005 This probably is one of the most impressive China Boy versions I ever seen. I heard it and played it on many jazz festivals and I have about 18 different takes from different groups in my iTunes assortment. From this session at the Swiss Ascona jazz festival the musicians seem to be on the edge. It looks like an instant arrangement with all kind of surprises being organized on the spot. This together with incredible musicianship makes this clip very exciting. All play with darn good jazz feel and that is a bonus as well. Bravo Marty and your men! Baby wont you please come home - Marty Grosz & his Hot Puppies 2005 Recorded at June 2005 Ascona Jazz Festival this fine band play an amazing set of very agreeable music. They perform some of the more popular standards, but with an ease and with a skill that few others can or bother to master.. The relaxed atmosphere comes across to the audience. These men know what they are doing. I remember cornetist Randy Reinhart and pianist John Sheridan from festivals in the USA when they were both members of the Jim Cullum Band. Jim always set high standards for his musicians which now pays off because they are on their own touring the world and play easy and relaxed jazz with great skill and on the long run, thats what it is basically all about. Trombonist John Allred has developed to be one of the prime players in the world and under the relaxed leadership of guitarist Marty Grosz and three very capable European musicians this sounds like an all round winning music team Marty Gross on guitar, Randy Reinhart cornet, John Allred trombone, John Sheridan piano. Art as a Political Manifesto: George Grosz

Georg Ehrenfried Groß was born in Berlin in 1893; he Americanized his name to George Grosz in 1916, out of a romantic enthusiasm for the books of James Fenimore Cooper, Bret Harte and Karl May. Grosz joined the Communist Party in 1919, but left it in 1922, as he was against any form of dictatorship. He emigrated to US in 1932 where he remained for the rest of his life (he died in 1959). Associated with the Berlin Dada and the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) group during the twenties, he remains in the art history for his political drawings, a savagely caricatural chronicle of the Weimar Republic on its most sordid chords: the sequels of the war joining the sprouts of the Nazi, everything floating on quagmires of confusion and corruption. A George Grosz exhibition is organized these days at Hirshhorn. I tried a video, hopefully it's not that bad.

Amihai Grosz - Graduates at the Centre

www.jmc.co.il In over 30 years of activity, thousands have benefited from the JMC's program for outstanding young musicians. Many of them now occupy leading playing and teaching positions in Israel and abroad, and are often invited to return to the Centre, this time as teachers and performers. Above all, this program, with its unique focus on chamber music, has revolutionized both the standards of chamber music making and its appreciation among music lovers in Israel. Some of Israel's most remarkable chamber groups, including the Jerusalem Quartet, the Ariel Quartet and the Jerusalem Trio, emerged from this program.

George Groz is widely known for his brutal satirical paintings of Berlin life in the 1920s. Born in Berlin in 1893, he was another prime mover of the Dada movement, as well as the New Objectivity group. He was also a member of the German Communist Party, and as such he was bitterly opposed to the Nazi Party. He left Germany shortly after Hitler came to power and settled in America. He returned to Berlin after the war, where he died in 1959 after a night of drinking led to a fall down a flight of stairs. Music is "Cavatina," theme song from "The Deer Hunter."

Some changes made - Marty Grosz in Toronto 1977

There will be some changes made - Marty Grosz 1977. Marty Grosz is the invited performer during one of Peter Appleyard jazz shows. In the background is Jim Galloway with his Metro Stompers from Toronto. According to the critics, Marty Grosz is today's foremost jazz rhythm guitarist and chord soloist. He is virtually the only major jazz guitarist who doesn't use an amplifier. This makes him either the last remaining proponent of the acoustic guitar tradition in jazz or the lone harbinger of a new non-electric movement. Marty sings, too. His vocals have become as much in demand at record sessions and jazz concerts as his driving guitar rhythm. They are delivered in styles ranging from barrelhouse abandon to whispered restraint, and are sometimes raucous, often mischievous, but almost always informed with a wry sense of the absurd. Grosz was born in Berlin, Germany in 1930. By the time he reached his third birthday, his toes were tapping to radio songs in New York. His urge for musical expression manifested itself when he began strumming a ukelele at the age of eight. A few years later he heard a record that highlighted guitarist Bernard Addison's shuffle-beat behind Roy Eldridge's trumpet: Out went the uke and in came the guitar.
