Z Vex Effects guitar pedals roundup

This is a brief roundup of almost all Z Vex pedals (by Mr. Vex himself) taken from the NAMM exhibition at 2006 by gearwire.com. Mr. Vex keeps his usual humour and good mood (I love that!) despite the fatigue of the show... My favourite, of course, is the Wah. Beautiful handcrafted (and handpainted, too!) pedals, but some of them a bit overpriced in my opinion. To Mr. Vex's immense credit, they are really advanced in terms of electronic design, and not a copy of anything else (a refreshing move in today's world of pedal clones). Described by some snobbish people as "gimmicks", it is true that some of them are too strange for more than one song, and sometimes unpredictable to get a constant sound from, but sometimes today's music desperately needs to be less predictable... Of course, there are the "normal" ones such as the Box Of Rock, the Super Duper etc. but most of them are completely crazy! Oh, and by the way, my all time favourite fuzz for my electric guitar would be the Woolly Mammoth - a fuzz initially designed for bass - if it didn't sound so muffled and so uncontrollable. In reality, it sounds much different than the wonderful clip at www.youtube.com . UPDATE: My snobbish attitude towards the Fuzz Factory is... gone! I am now the proud owner of one. Strange really, because I had played with it a lot before, and never really liked it. It doesn't do everything, but has the advantage of instant wall-of-fuzz tone on a clean amp (think Fu Manchu, Smashing Pumpkins ...

Electro-Harmonix, guitar pedal engineers, vintage sound gadgets

Boing Boing Video archives: www.boingboing.net Joel from Boing Boing Gadgets explains: ------ After we noticed the Voice Box FX pedal from Electro-Harmonix, I noticed that they were based in Long Island City, just a short train ride away from my place in Brooklyn. Since I'm getting ready to move to Oregon—Hello, Eugene!—I figured I ought to get up there and check out one of the last family-owned music gear companies in America. Turns out that EHX also manufacturers a huge percentage of the world's vacuum tubes in its factory in Russia, which are then sent back to New York for testing and pairing before being sold to vintage and high-end audio fans, as well as manufacturers like McIntosh. I had a really good time checking out the factory floor to see the hand-made vacuum tube testing machines, as well as talking to the engineers that sit around all day and try to figure out how to get the ideas for new FX processors out of their crazy boss's head and into working hardware. And thankfully for you, [Wes and Derek on the Boing Boing Video crew] edited out all the footage where I was wanking around with FX boxes, looking mournfully at the camera and whining that "Hey, this box doesn't make me sound as good as it does when people with talent use it. What gives?" ---- Full post with comments here: gadgets.boingboing.net

Keeley Fuzz Head Guitar Pedal

Keeley Electronics Fuzz Head Guitar Pedal Designed to work like Fuzz Face pedals that many players use as a LEAD BOOST. A Fuzz Face can be muddy, lacking note definition, too bassy, and lacking sustain. An overdrive can be not enough or too smooth. In contrast our design is transparent, has a better frequency response, and gives you that cutting edge for lead breaks. The Heart of this pedal is a NPN Germanium Transistor. Additional Gain Stage, a Darlington Pair of high gain silicon transistors for tons of volume output. This is great for overdriving tube amps or other overdrive pedals. Buffered output so that it can drive pedals or amps with a nice high current and low impedance signal. True-Bypass, offers you a clean true signal when the pedal is off. Large Blue LED, a Killer Keeley Trademark! Silicon/Germanium Toggle switch, this is like a gain Style switch. The "SI" mode inserts two diodes (one silicon and one germanium in parallel) in the distortion circuit so you can have a modern twist on a vintage sound, increases the gain and compression a bit for more sustain. This is more of an overdrive mode. The "GE" mode is just raw and open sounding! Very Transparent and Dynamic. Taking the best qualities of the germainum designs and the overdrives. Roll back the volume on your guitar for clean sounds, a variety of Tones, Textures, and Natural Fuzz/Overdrive! Internal Drive-Range Control. Let's you set up the Range of the Exteral drive control (FUZZ), perfect for fine tuning ...

Zvex Distortron Guitar Pedal

Zvex Distortron Guitar Pedal The Distortron is also in the new Vextron series of tough-painted, single silkscreen pedals. This pedal is a modified version of our Box of Rock's Distortron Engine. The improvements include a gain boost switch for added sizzle and a sub control switch which has the original Box of Rock level on setting 3, slightly shaved subs at 2, and notably shaved at 1. The amounts were carefully selected to reduce "flubbiness" that occurs when using amps with heavy low-end response. It would be immodest of me to suggest that this Z.Vex effect is the greatest distortion pedal of all time, but it probably is. Try it last in your chain, and beat it up with your other effects... it stacks like a dream.

Morpheus DropTune Guitar Pedal Summer NAMM Demo

More info at www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/DropTune/. This is cool. The Morpheus DropTune lets you instantly drop the tuning of your entire guitar — no need to deal with tuning instability, floppy string buzz, super-heavy strings, or buying another guitar. By engaging the Morpheus DropTune, you can drop your tuning in 1/2-step decrements... all the way up to 3-1/2 steps. Plus, there's a full octave and octaver onboard. Best yet, Morpheus' patented algorithm keeps your tone harmonically accurate, with all of those overtones you'd expect. You've got to try DropTune out for yourself.

Me doing a demo of my Digitech RP50 guitar effects processor. I pretty much go through some of the presets to show what it can do. It was like $50 bucks new, so it's a great deal for the money. The only minor problem, which I forgot to mention, is the fact that the switches for toggling effects are close together and it's easy to accidentally go into Bypass mode by hitting them at the same time if you have big shoes on. Other than that it's awesome. I'm playing my Fender Jaguar HH so you know. Enjoy!
