Chinese Music Guqin Wang Fei 王菲古琴Without Ulterior Motives meditation relaxation Zen

王菲Wang Fei is an international award winning artist, published writer, and accomplished musician who has toured internationally. Wang Fei was professionally trained in literature, music and art since childhood and studied with several masters in these fields. Not only is she one of the few scholars who have truly mastered the qin and who can bring qin music to a wider audience, she is also one of the few qin performers who still maintain the qin in the traditional way as a scholarly art. Her elegant, graceful and peaceful style brings to her audiences the feeling of reading poems and enjoying Chinese landscape painting when they listen to her qin playing. Wang Fei began her study of the guqin under Professor Li Xiangting at the Central Conservatory of Music in China in 1985. Master Li Xiangting regards Wang Fei as one of the most promising students he has ever had the opportunity to teach among his more than 500 students around the world. The 古琴guqin , a seven-stringed zither, is China 's oldest stringed instrument, with a history of some 3000 years. It has always been viewed as a symbol of Chinese high culture and the instrument most expressive of the essence of Chinese music. In Imperial China, a well educated scholar was expected to be skilled in four arts: qin (the guqin), qi (the game of Go), shu (calligraphy) and hua (painting). It became part of a tradition cultivated by the Chinese literati, and an instrument associated with philosophers, sages, and emperors ...

Guqin 古琴- Oulu Wang Ji

This is one of the most personalized pieces in my current repertoire; I owe a debt to Guan Pinghu and Pu Xuezhai, but the rendition is essentially my own. Among the most prominent masters, only Li Xiangting plays this piece today--and he does so in only about half the time. I enjoy slowing down radically, as it allows me to explore "space" and the architecture of lingering sound. Oulu Wang Ji ("Seagulls - Forgetting Schemes") is fundamentally a piece of admonition. It draws from an old story wherein a surprised fisherman discovers that seagulls have no fear of him until he thinks about killing them for dinner. How anybody could make that into a piece of music is beyond me, but apparently somebody succeeded! The music explores both the vast, misty scenery of the original tale and the stern moral lesson that our intentions are never entirely opaque to others, and that every motivation bears consequences. Tune for a Peaceful Night - guqin - Chinese slide guitar

For my 50th vid I wanted to do something special! So here's a litte "Zen" like piece on the Chinese guqin. I started to play this instrument, on and off, a few years ago when I had time on my hands as I was clustered to a wheelchair due to a broken kneecap. The history of this instrument goes back 3000 years. If you want to know more about it then do a youtube search on "guqin wang fei" She's a great guqin player and an authority on its history. She teaches in San Francisco and runs an internet shop that sells instruments, books, cd's and dvd's. I kinda wonder what Blind Lemon would think of this ;-) The wire you see coming out of the guqin is the microphone I used to record; so this is not an "electric" guqin as some people think - it's just miked up close, hence the sound. I bought my qin (Naga model from around $1700) from Wang Fei at www.chineseculture.net A quality instrument without any problems. It came directly from China without any hassles. I think the instruments from $3-500 are student grade instruments; not bad but not great either. In any case if you're not sure if you'll be able to play it, it might be better to buy such an instrument first or try to find someone in your area that has one. One thing to watch though is the tuning system. Mine has a modern tuning system; the attachements under my qin have guitar-like tuners or machineheads. The old system just attaches the strings to two posts without any possiblility to adjust them. This means, I saw it on a ...

Guqin 古琴- Yu Qiao Wen Da

Yu Qiao Wen Da ("Dialogues of the Fisherman and Woodcutter") is one of the traditional masterpieces, widely circulated since the Ming dynasty. Its present fame, however, owes largely to 20th century master Wu Jinglüe - who was so good at this piece that he earned the monicker "Wu Yu Qiao". Wu infused into Yu Qiao his deep lyrical emotion and soaring vision, as well as an unprecedented level of exacting technical discipline. The present performance is greatly indebted to his example, which I hope to spend many more years aspiring in vain to emulate! I have also benefited from the lilting and atmospheric renditions of Gong Yi. Fisherman and woodcutter are traditional archetypes of people with no formal education and little cultural elevation, who understand the world and explore its possibilities far more than the exhausted scholar in his study or the official weighed down with responsibilities. Yu Qiao tells of the joys of companionship, and withdrawal from the drab necessity of the everyday into a world of inviting grottoes and vast mountain retreats.

Chinese Music Guqin Wang Fei 流水-王菲古琴-NAGA Events Review 北美琴社活动

This is a slide show of North American Guqin Aossoication's events review. Background music Liu Shui Flowing Water played by Wang Fei, director of the North American Guqin Association. This piece is more than 700 years old, and is perhaps the most famous Chinese classical composition. The story behind it concerns the scholar Yu Boya and his friend the woodcutter Zhong Ziqi. The guqin music played by Yu Boya was as grand as the high mountains and as lively as flowing water, but only Zhong Ziqi could perceive this in his music. As a result of this mutual appreciation they became very close friends. When Zhong Ziqi died, Yu Boya destroyed his guqin and vowed never to play again, because he felt nobody else could understand his music. This is the origin of the Chinese expression zhi yin -- "knowing the sound", which means a confidant or soulmate. The version played by Wang Fei is the same as that included on the gold CD to represent Chinese music, sent into space by NASA in 1977. NAGA was founded in 1997 by Wang Fei, an internationally known guqin player. Its mission is to promote aspects of Chinese culture through the traditional art of the guqin and to build a bridge for cultural exchange and mutual understanding between the Chinese and American communities. In the last ten years NAGA has grown in membership and has increased the number of programs it offers to the public. It invites guest presenters and performers to its events as a way of expanding its mission of bringing ...

Guqin 古琴- Ping Sha Luo Yan

One of the most beloved of all qin pieces, Ping Sha Luo Yan ("Geese Descend on Level Sands") exists in dozens of variants across handbooks and schools. It practically constitutes a genre unto itself, as masters mining its depths find stately beauty, stark aggression, lyrical playfulness, and countless other emotional shades. Here I follow the Guangling tradition, particularly as illuminated by Gong Yi and Wu Wenguang. In the poetic world that generated Ping Sha, geese migrate southward, the direction of escape and exile. The piece meditates on the freedom of these birds to do as they please, to process stately across the skies while you and I remain stuck where we are no matter how much we may wish to follow them. 秋高气爽Autumn is lofty, the air clear; 风静沙平the wind quiets, the sands level. 云程万里Clouds stretch for ten-thousand miles, 天际飞鸣while cries wing the horizon. The full recording runs about 11:40.

Guqin 古琴Yuan Jung-ping performs Lament of Departure on Guqin, 袁中平古琴演奏長亭怨慢

Mr Yuan Jung-ping, the founder of New York Qin Society as well as Chung Hua Guqin Society [中華古琴協會], and a Guqin instructor in Nanhua University [Taiwan] held a few close and intimate Guqin workshops in Chung-dao Tang [中道堂], Catskill, NY. He brought with him a Chung-dao Qin [中道琴], made by a Qin maker in Taiwan. Chung-dao Qin are Guqin made with 100-year old wood, made under the strict supervision of Mr Yuan Jung-ping. It uses traditional silk strings, instead of the modern metal strings. The piece performed is Chang Ting Yuan Man [長亭怨慢], which I loosely translated it to "Lament of Departure." Lyric written by a Song Dynasty poet Jiang Kui [姜夔, aka. Hermit of the White Stone]. The song itself is an old one, the Guqin music was transcripted by Mr Yuan Jung-ping. The location was in the Chung-dao Tang [中道堂] in Catskill, NY. The lyric is in the song, so I am not recapping them here. Video edited and shot by Henryshoots.com. All rights reserved. Wang Fei Guqin Confucius Chinese Music 王菲古琴孔子幽兰The Solitary Orchid

《幽兰》You Lan (The Solitary Orchid) The earliest score for this piece is 1400 years old, so it is probably the oldest surviving score anywhere in the world that is still played today. It is closely associated with Confucius. He travelled to various states in China , attempting to promote his ideas of ethics and virtue as an ideal of government, but was constantly rejected. One day he saw an orchid growing alone among ordinary plants. He likened it to a wise man whose ideas are not in tune with the time, and who consequently associates with the common people. This performance is from NAGA's new production "Beyond a Museum Piece two: From Before the Tang Dynasty to Today" on May 30th, 2010 at 7:30pm at Fort Mason Center, San Francisco. Highlights 1. According to the traditional Chinese view, if you didn't know the guqin, one could not be considered either cultured or a beautiful woman! The guqin was the first of the four skills required of a scholar, and first of the 13 requirements for a beautiful woman. This exciting multidisciplinary production will take the audience on a special musical journey that highlights Chinese culture and music from various past dynasties through to the present day. 2. "Listening to the qin" is a recurring title and theme in many famous Chinese poems and paintings. But nothing can replace actually "listening to the qin". The concert is truly a live "Listen to the qin" by a renowned guqin player, NAGA director Wang Fei. It includes renderings ...

Guqin 古琴- Qiu Sai Yin

My rendition here is substantially in the tradition of Wu Jinglüe and his son Wu Wenguang. Qiu Sai Yin, whose title is difficult for me to translate with confidence, concerns the loneliness, despair, and yearning of Wang Zhaojun, a noble lady married off to a northern nomad prince. Moreso than most qin pieces, this one bears multiple interpretations. It is also associated with the exile and suicide of Qu Yuan (under the title Sao Shou Wen Tian) and of an ancient qin master's learning music through listening to the sounds of nature, while stranded alone on a distant island (as Shuixian Cao or "Water Immortal"). One of the most respected and exquisite pieces in the modern repertoire, Qiu Sai Yin makes use of the Shang mode - S R2 M1 P N2 S, which I'm keeping in sargam notation just to force you to learn it! Shang mode lacks the third interval (ga), the most emotionally decisive for any scale, leaving its flavor indeterminate and conveying majesty and mystery without straightforwardly positive or negative feelings. During the present performance my "intention" was mainly on the Wang Zhaojun story; it will be interesting to see what happens when I try out the "water immortal" instead. It's been a while since I posted a qin tune so here goes. Wonlong Yin is a beautiful melody and although it has already been posted on YouTube I decided to learn and record it. My version is slightly slower that the one on YouTube. I get often inquiries about how to get a qin and how to play it. I got mine (the Naga model) here www.chineseculture.net I also got a lot of instruction materials from that site. Gong Yi's book and dvd set are the best to start with - they use standard notation along with chinese tablature. If you have guitar, and especially fingerpicking, skills this instrument is fun and not that hard to learn (for simple and medium advanced pieces - advanced pieces will take endless practice) For more info see videodescription of my previous qin piece www.youtube.com

Guqin(古琴) piece performed by a master

This is Mr.TSE Chun-Yan (謝俊仁) from Hong Kong, China who plays the Guqin(古琴) very well. I had taken a Chinese Music Appreciation course in my 1st semester at university and learning about the Guqin was part of the course. In the course, we were required to attend 4 workshops in which we were taught the basics and technique of playing the Guqin, as well as the history and concepts of playing it. I am not sure about the title of this piece, but I am certain that Mr.TSE makes a good sound on the qin in this video. Enjoy!

Electric Guqin

I took the frets off of an old electric guitar, and used a combination of bass, acoustic and electric guitar strings to achieve correct guqin tuning, minus the top string. I do not pretend to be a guqin player, and this is not a classical guqin piece, it is just a demonstration to show how this kind of instrument can be made to sound like the guqin.
