Passing Through: www.youtube.com - Friends, Please visit my Poet friend "Passing Through's" YouTube channel: www.youtube.com , and support him - Thanks :) I. Jig: Vivace II. Ostinato: Presto Gustav Holst (21 September 1874 - 25 May 1934) was a British composer and was a music teacher for over 20 years. Holst is most famous for his orchestral suite The Planets.Having studied at the Royal College of Music in London, his early work was influenced by Ravel,Grieg, Richard Strauss, and Ralph Vaughan Williams, but most of his music is highly original, with influences from Hindu spiritualism and English folk tunes.Holst's music is well known for unconventional use of metre and haunting melodies. In 1905, Holst was appointed Director of Music at St Paul's Girls' School in Hammersmith, London, where he composed the successful and still popular St Paul's Suite for the school orchestra in 1913. St. Paul's Suite (Op. 29 no. 2) is a composition for orchestra. It was written in 1912, but due to revisions wasn't published until 1922. The suite has four movements: I. Jig: Vivace II. Ostinato: Presto III. Intermezzo: Andante con moto IV. Finale (The Dargason): Allegro (We appreciate Wikipaedia's contributions in the descriptions here)

Holst- Venus, the Bringer of Peace- The Planets Suite

English composer Gustav Holst composed The Planets between 1914 and 1916. The Birmingham premiere of the suite took place in 1918, fifteen years before Pluto was discovered. Though the Planets became by far the most popular work of Holst's and one of the most known pieces by an English-born composer, Holst did not consider the piece one of his finest. Partially because of this, he never wrote an eighth movement, though unexpectedly the IAU relegated Pluto from its status as planet proper in 2006.

Jupiter from The Planets

This is just about best version ever recorded (this is the version that everyone recommends), it's so precise and competent, and there are no mistakes that I can hear. This is a recording of 'Jupiter-The Bringer of Jollity' from the Planets Suite Op. 32 by Gustav Holst(1874-1934). This is Charles Dutoit conducting the 'Ochestre symphonique de Montréal', the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. It really works well with pictures of the planets, and Jupiter of course! Enjoy!

Gustav Holst - The Planets, Op. 32

"The Planets", Op. 32, is a seven-movement orchestral suite by the English composer Gustav Holst, written between 1914 and 1916. Each movement of the suite is named after a planet of the Solar System and its corresponding astrological character as defined by Holst. With the exception of Earth, which is not observed in astrological practice, all the planets are represented. The idea of the work was suggested to Holst by Clifford Bax, who introduced him to astrology when the two were part of a small group of English artists holidaying in Majorca in the spring of 1913; Holst became quite a devotee of the subject, and liked to cast his friends' horoscopes for fun. The suite has seven movements, each named after a planet and its corresponding astrological character: 1. Mars, the Bringer of War; 2. Venus, the Bringer of Peace; 3. Mercury, the Winged Messenger; 4. Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity; 5. Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age; 6. Uranus, the Magician; 7. Neptune, the Mystic. Holst's original title (clearly seen on the handwritten full score) was "Seven Pieces for Large Orchestra". he orchestral premiere of The Planets suite, conducted at Holst's request by Adrian Boult, was held at short notice on 29 September 1918, during the last weeks of World War I, in the Queen's Hall with the financial support of Holst's friend and fellow composer Henry Balfour Gardiner. It was hastily rehearsed; the musicians of the Queen's Hall Orchestra first saw the complicated music only two hours ...
