This beautiful piece sounds like Guqin music (古琴), Chinese zither with 7 strings. In fact it is performed on Guzheng (Chinese harp with 21 strings) by Liu Fang who is best known as the virtuoso of the pipa (Chinese lute). The title is "Chanting of Tiema" (Tie Ma Yin 鐵馬吟) composed by Zhao Dengshan (趙登山) is one of the most excellent pieces composed in the 80s. This piece is full of spirit of the traditional classical style of music. It is said that the inspiration was related to a temple in a mountain. Tiema contains pieces of metals (Buddhist prayer bells) hanging on the roof outside of the temple. It produces special sounds when wind blows. The composition of this piece catches beautifully a sense of the tranquility and an image of being in nature - the spiritual inspiration of this piece makes it a good choice for meditation. Zheng, commonly known as "gu zheng", (pronounced "goo jung"), is a plucked string instrument that is part of the zither family, related to the Japanese koto, Vietnamese dan tranh and Korean kayagum. The piece is divided into three parts:"Song of Pipa", "Dance of Leaf", "The surging Qian Water". This piece is well received by Zheng players and music lovers in China and abroad, and it has won many composition prizes. SOng of Pipa: The melody and tone is based on Guizhou's folk song. The careful use "Hua"滑音(glissando) and "An"按音(pushing) as well as alternation of long ＆ short phrases express the lingering charm of the folk musician's chanting and singing. Dance of Leaves: Made use of new performing techniques and complicated change in rhythms(alternating 3/4 ＆ 5/8) in order to show the bold and unrestrained dancing posture as well as the primitive wild scenery of the field and mountains. The Surging Qian Water: There are many high mountains and valleys around the Geizhou area. The music is a picture of the rapids, streams and the high lofty mountains. The composer made use of a lot of fast passages on the left hand. This is the first time for the instrument to let the left hand do this kind of fingerings continuingly and independently.

Happy Lunar New Year! Best wishes of health and abundance to you! This was a song I learnt when I was 13, when I was playing in the school's Chinese Orchestra. I hope it has the appropriate mood for a fighting-fit Year of the Tiger! There were no guzheng parts for this song, so I was assigned to play the drums, and a good friend of mine who was also a guzheng player was assigned to play the cymbals. We stood near the double bass and cello players, and my memory of what they played helped me develop the bass line for this song. I had very little time to improvise from memory and even less time to practice this song because I was rushing to fly off soon to my hometown to celebrate the Lunar New Year with my friends and family.
