The Hidden Cost of H.264
The cost is only part of the H.264 story. First, consider what the MPEG committee themselves are saying about H.264 (aka MPEG4 Part10): Article excerpt (quote) "The MPEG group had this to say about the use of these MPEG based codecs in security - "Generally speaking it is an unsafe policy to use these codecs for highly sensitive applications. For example, when taking a recording of an event and requiring a high resolution single frame (as might be the requirement in many circumstances) the possibility of achieving this with MPEG/H264 is unlikely -- street scenes, shopping mall and anywhere single frame close identification is required should NOT be recorded using MPEG/H264 codecs. It should be noted that the MPEG committee is mainly concerned with video and audio for entertainment"." Article reference www.initsys.net H.264 was designed for forward streaming applications such as movie entertainment - not security. The two have very different requirements. While H.264 is excellent for streaming high resolution images, it is not designed to be played back in slow-mode and allow for extraction of high quality still images from anywhere in the recorded stream, which is an absolute must in a security application. This is not an inherent strength of H.264. Surveillance is about finding the right still frame and be able to zoom in to ID a person or event. H.264 Encoder for VirtualDub Tutorial
Quick steps to getting a h.264 encoder for Virtual Dub. This encoder works very well, producing great quality video, without eating up Hard Drive space. At midline quality (compression bar smack dab in the middle, the default spot), 1920x1080 videos are only roughly 40 to 50MB big per minute. Downsides? It takes a bit longer to convert than some encoders, but nothing that'll really frustrate you (unless you have a slower system, perhaps). To Get: Go to SourceForge - Search x264vfw - DL either the regular 32bit or 64bit version (depending on whether your VirtualDub/System is 32 or 64 bit) - Open VirtualDub - You can now see it under video-Compressions - Encode your video!
