We Are The World 25 For Haiti - Official Video

Recorded on February 1st, 2010, in the same studio as the original 25 years earlier (Henson Recording Studios, formerly A&M Recording Studios) "We Are The World 25 For Haiti", in which Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie serve as executive producers and producers, was created in collaboration with executive producers Wyclef Jean, Randy Phillips and Peter Tortorici; producers Humberto Gattica and RedOne; and co-producers Rickey Minor, Mervyn Warren and Patti Austin to benefit the Haitian earthquake relief efforts and the rebuilding of Haiti. Academy Award-winning writer-director Paul Haggis (Crash, Million Dollar Baby), whose own personal efforts as well as those of Artists for Peace and Justice have already saved countless lives in Haiti, filmed the private recording session to create the accompanying video and behind-the-scenes production, and serves as Film Director and as an Executive Producer with Jones, Richie, Jean, Phillips and Tortorici. The 25th Anniversary recording features over 80 artists and performers. The recording of We Are The World 25 For Haiti embodied the same enthusiasm, sense of purpose and generosity as the original recording 25 years ago. Every one of the artists who participated, regardless of genre or generation, walked into the room with their hearts and souls completely open to coming together to help the people of Haiti.

Haiti's Martelly sets education goals high

Michel Martelly, the new president of Haiti, has promised that all the impoverished nation's primary school children would all be enrolled within his five-year term. With an estimated 770000 children targeted for the programme this year alone, many in Haiti are left to wonder who will pay the $45m annual bill for Martelly's lofty goal. Further complicating Martelly's ambition is the cost of repairs needed for schools damaged in last year's devastating earthquake. Ross Velton reports for Al Jazeera from Port-Au-Prince.

Haiti's homeless displaced again

Many of Haiti's more than 600000 still displaced by country's devastating 2010 earthquake and forced to live on private property, are now struggling to finding shelter again. A significant number have already been left with nowhere to go after evicted from their meager tents by landowners trying to take back control of their property. Some say authorities, working in support of landlords, forced them out by destroying their tents. The International Organisation for Migration, a rights group, says one in four of those displaced have been threatened with eviction. Teresa Bo reports.

Haiti trade hurt by poor infrastructure

Haiti is a poor country but it is rich in natural resources. The country grows some of the world's finest mangoes and it is one of the country's biggest exports after textiles. It should have a thriving mango industry but it only exports 10 per cent of its crop because of poor infrastructure. Al Jazeera's Rob Reynolds reports from Grand Croix, Haiti.

UN hit with cash demand over Haiti cholera

The United Nations has been hit with a demand for hundreds of millions of dollars in reparations because of a year-old cholera outbreak that has killed more than 6700 Haitians. The demand was made on Tuesday on behalf of more than 5000 Haitian cholera victims and their families in a petition filed at UN headquarters in New York by the Boston-based Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti. The human rights group said the peacekeeping soldiers were not adequately screened by the United Nations. Al Jazeera's Kristen Saloomey reports from New York.

DEPUTE ARNEL BELIZAIRE - EVANS PAUL (kaplume) Haiti News

Arnel Bélizaire a été arrêté à l'aéroport evans paul kaplume Gary Desrosiers, le Porte-parole adjoint de la Police Nationale d'Haiti (PNH), Belizaire was elected to Haiti's parliament in a March 20 runoff, a year and two months after the earthquake. Dozens of Belizaire's supporters, including a handful of fellow deputies, showed up at the airport late Thursday to call for his release. Belizaire was driven to the very prison where he had been locked up since 2004 on an illegal weapons charge. Prime Minister Garry Conille, who went to the prison, said he did so to "make sure (Belizaire's) rights have been respected.'' Belizaire belongs to Veye Yo, a political party that is aligned with former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. The lawmaker has been openly critical of Haitian President Michel Martelly in recent weeks, and the two have lashed out at each other at the National Palace.

evictions Haiti

In this short video, families from Camp Django in Delmas 17 left the space they have called home for more than a year after attacks by the Haitian National Police and intimidation by the United Nations peacekeeping forces (MINUSTAH). Includes interviews with displaced women, Mayor Wilson Jeudy of Delmas, and highlights the precarious new living conditions where many of Haiti's most vulnerable people are being forced to relocate. In the midst of the hurricane season, as Tropical Storm Emily was predicted to bear down on Port-au-Prince, the Haitian authorities continued to forcibly and illegally evict homeless families from their makeshift shelters. Internally displaced people have been living in tent cities and under tarps for more than 18 months while the Haitian government and NGOs have been slow to provide safe alternative housing for the hundreds of thousands rendered homeless by the earthquake on January 12, 2010.
