Hakim plays Hakim on the Sacre Coeur organ

Naji Hakim (born 1955 in Beirut) was a pupil of Jean Langlais and he studied at the Conservatiore National Superiere de Paris, where he won first prizes in each discipline. He has also won first prizes in the organ competitions in Haarlem, Beauvais, Lyon, Nuremberg, St Albans, Strasbourg and Rennes. He was titulaire in the Scare Coeur from 1985-93 and upon the death of Olivier Messiaen became his successor in that organ loft until the present day. The organ is mostly Cavaille-Coll with some additions/changes by Mutin and Jean Renaud. The organ was originally built for the Baron Albert de Espée for his castle music room in Ilbarritz by Cavaille-Coll (IV/70). The baron then wanted another organ to replace it in 1905, and the old instrument was sold to Charles Mutin and assembled in his workshops. It was altered to make it less orchestral in outlook and eventually sold to the Sacre Coeur in 1914 (then still unfinished) and installed in 1919. Resorations and renovations in 1930 & 1960 led to some unwise additions and it was in very poor condition by 1980 when a complete restoration was planned. The restored organ was dedicated on Whitsun 1985. This Final comes from Hakim's triptych Hommage á Igor Stravinsky (Stravinsky is one of his greatest influences), the triptych consists of a Prélude, Danse and Final all based on gregorian themes. It was first performed at the Royal Festival Hall, London in November 1987. This recording comes from the Priory Records label, PRCD 327 Great ...

After providing a more than adequate answer, he proceeds on to the much anticipated overview of the five pillars of Islam. Murad provides a highly intellectual perspective that is useful for non-Muslims as well as Muslims. (Recorded at the Dar al Islam Teachers' Institute seminar). Living with Our Selves | Abdal Hakim Murad

Talk by Sheikh Abdal Hakim Murad - 30th November 2010 - Cambridge - 1 hour 30 mins 46 secs How can one leave the self behind on the path to Allah when we are the self? This was the central paradox behind the sheikh's latest circle: living with our selves. Approaching the question through the language left us by today's monoculture makes our task difficult; the word has been so desacralised that it is nigh on impossible. This is not to say that signs are not present. Ironically the depth of modern scientific study has only given us the opportunity to diversify our appreciation of God's signs, from the far reaches of the universe down to the enigmatic workings of the subatomic realm; these ayat all urge us to be what the sheikh calls 'New Cynics', the Rindan of Mevlana Rumi. Akin to the intoxicated joyful ones of old who would laugh at the absurdity of their own selves and the world around them, we need now more than ever to marry the exuberance of youth with a learned cynicism over what the modern world seeks to beguile us with. This futuwwa has Hadhrat Ali - Shah e Merdan - as its champion, for his sword Zulfiqar with its two points indicated to the inward and outward rectification required of those who would tread the path of Islamic chivalry. That this dual jihad was and indeed is necessary was highlighted by the Sheikh in a chilling passage: al-Hasan al-Basri said that 'this world is a bridge, it is for passing over, not building on'; if you cannot realise this then ...

The Power of Monotheism | Abdal Hakim Murad

Talk by Sheikh Abdal Hakim Murad - 11 December 2010 - Cambridge - 46 mins 59 secs In this subtle and beautiful talk, delivered at the FOSIS Winter Conference, held late last year in Cambridge, Sheikh Abdal Hakim reflects on the amazing transformative power of a true understanding of the Divine Unity (tawhid). Why was it that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forgave the people of Mecca when he had conquered them? How was it that Islam was welcomed and honoured as it spread? What is it that brings people from all over the world to the Two Holy Cities in peace and brotherhood? Each of these and many many more examples testify to the unparalleled power of the pure monotheism of Islam to overcome hostility, division and the lust for revenge. By fully perceiving the One True Reality, we let go of the petty hatreds of our many apparent differences. But perhaps because we are so familiar with these stories, we seem to have forgotten how clearly this real capacity for forgiveness and empathy contrasts with the usual course of human behaviour. Certainly the state of the world today strongly suggests we are failing badly in our responsibility to enact the message of La ilaha illa Allah. May Allah grant us a true understanding of tawhid that will transform our hearts and through our hearts the world around us. For more, visit: cambridgekhutbasetc.blogspot.com

The War Against Muslim Women - Abdullah Hakim Quick

Contrary to what the title suggests, this lecture is not a discussion about the onslaught of the western ideologies against the position of the Muslim woman. In actuality, this presentation is about the internal war. This lecture is about the war zone that is alive behind the closed doors of the Muslim homes. Is their a problem with our home relationships? Is their a problem in our marriages? Is their a problem with how our educational institutions are structured today? These and other important questions are analyzed, commented on, and answered in this empowering presentation. Shaykh Abdullah Hakim Quick, PhD, embraced Islam in 1970 and thereafter pursued his studies at the Islamic University of Madinah, where he completed a BA from the College of Da'wah and Usul al-Din. He later went for his Masters degree and completed his PhD on the History of Islam in Africa at the University of Toronto, Canada. The focus of his thesis was the life of the great mujaddid of the 18th century, Shaykh Uthman Ibn Fudi. Shaykh Abdullah Hakim has traveled to more than 34 countries on lecture and educational tours, has served as Imam, teacher and counselor in the USA, Canada and the West Indies. For three years he contributed to the religious page of Canada's leading newspaper. He is presently a Senior Lecturer at the Dar-ul-Arqam Islamic Institute and Director of the Da'wah Department of the Muslim Judicial Council, Cape Town, South Africa. www.iisna.com islamic muslim allah quran koran ...
