Airfix 1/72 Handley Page Hampden Photo build Guide
A step by step photo build guide for the Airfix 1/72 scale Handley Page Hampden , used as a medium bomber by the RAF in the early years of the war. Nicknamed the 'flying suitcase' due to it's rather compact nature , it was celebrated by its crews for manouverability but not it's cramped conditions and vulnerability to fighter attack. This example was flown by Flight Lieutenant (later Wing Commander)Roderick 'Babe' Learoyd of 49 squadron on a raid on the Dortmund Ems Canal on the 12th August 1940 for which he was later awarded the Victoria Cross for outstanding leadership and courage under fire. The music I have used is 'Trampoline' by lolo which I don't own so all the rights are retained by specfic rights holders.

The Hampden was the last of the twin-engined medium bombers to go into service during the expansion of Bomber Command in the late 1930s and, together with the Wellington and Whitley, it bore the brunt of the Royal Air Force's attacks against Germany in the early years of the Second World War. Better manoeuvrability and performance than its two contemporaries led to high expectations, but early war time operations proved the aircraft had serious deficiencies. Two particular problems were identified. The very narrow fuselage provided cramped accommodation for the crew causing fatigue on long missions. Unlike other British medium bombers the Hampden had no multi-gun power-operated turrets. Its fixed forward gun was next to useless and the three flexible gun mountings in the nose and fuselage had a limited traverse which produced a number of blind spots. Modifications were put in hand to provide more guns but the fuselage design remained a problem throughout its service life. After a disastrous, but mercifully short, daylight campaign Hampdens were switched to night operations until 1942 when a number were converted to carry a torpedo. Eventually 144 aircraft were modified in this way and the type continued in service with Coastal Command as a torpedo bomber until December 1943.

Wayne Handley's custom built Turbine Powered "Raven" experienced an engine malfunction. Below 1000 feet, there is no option but to crash land. Footage contains a slow motion segment of the crash and the same maneuver from the day before. His experience as Navy fighter pilot, air show performer, and aerobatic instructor is called upon for what looks to be an unsurvivable situation. With only seconds to impact, Wayne fights to control the descent speed and hit at the most survivable angle. Wayne recovered from his injuries and continues to fly recreationally and teach aerobatics.

This is some better quality film than I originally posted The Handley Page HP42 and HP45 were British four-engined long-range biplane airliners designed to a 1928 Imperial Airways specification by Handley Page of Radlett in Hertfordshire. The HP42/45 were the land-based airliners of Imperial Airways and along with the company's later flying boats are well remembered. Eight aircraft were built, four of each type; all were named, with names beginning with the letter "H". One was destroyed in an airship hangar fire in 1937 but the remainder survived to be impressed into Royal Air Force service at the outbreak of the Second World War. No lives were lost in civilian service (a record thought to be unique for contemporary aircraft) but by 1940 all had been destroyed. The HP42 was designed for the long-range, Eastern routes and the similar HP45 was built for the European routes. In Imperial Airways service, the HP42 was designated the HP42E (E for "Eastern" routes - India and South Africa), while the HP45 was called the HP42W (W for "Western" ie European routes). The HP42 and HP45 designations were Handley Page's identifiers but this was not commonly known at the time. The HP42 was a large unequal-span biplane of all-metal construction except for the fabric coverings of the wings, tail surfaces and rear fuselage. The wings were braced by Warren girders. No. 434 (Bluenose) Squadron RCAF Motto: "In excelsis vincimus" ("We conquer in the heights"). Badge: A representation of the schooner "Bluenose". The squadron was adopted by the Rotary Club of Halifax, NS, and took the nickname "Bluenose" in reference to the common nickname for Nova Scotians. The badge depicts its namesake, the famous schooner Bluenose - one the fastest and most graceful ships ever to sail the seas. Authority: King George VI, October 1945. No 434 Squadron was formed at Tholthorpe, Yorkshire, on 13 June 1943, as a unit of No. 6 (RCAF) Group of Bomber Command. It began operations on 12/13th August and continued to operate from Tholthorpe until December 1944, when moved to Croft. There it remained based for the rest of its stay in England. Equipped first with Halifax Vs, No. 434 converted to Halifax IIIs in May 1944, and to Lancaster Xs December 1944. During its tour with No. 6 Group the squadron flew 2597 operational sorties on 199 operations. SAA Scottish Model Airshow 2010 @ Castle Kennedy. Pilots were father son act, Dave and Andy Johnston. Dave Johnstone was piloting the Vulcan and son Andy the Victor. The Victor has a little problem with the retracts and only the right gear came down. After a few shots 'jiggling' the plane and trying to retract the retracts all 3 eventually fell and he landed safely.

Tommy Handley - The Man With the Big Cigar (Who is this man that looks like Charlie Chaplin?) Thomas Reginald "Tommy" Handley (January 17, 1892 January 9, 1949) was a British comedian, mainly known for the BBC radio program ITMA ("It's That Man Again"). He was born at Toxteth Park, Liverpool in Lancashire. He served in the British Army during World War I and went on to work in variety, and in the infancy of radio became known as a regular broadcaster. He worked with people such as Arthur Askey and Bob Monkhouse, and wrote many radio scripts, but it is the BBC comedy series ITMA for which he is best known. He later starred in the ITMA film in 1942 and in Time Flies in 1944 "Now we've seen a lot of pictures of the people in the news. And we've got to know a lot of them by sight. Chamberlain with his umbrella, Churchill with his hats. Hore-Belisha, well we know him quite alright. But there's one whose lovely photograph we've seen for years and years.
