From the Crosses Of Annagh Pub, Miltown Malbay,County Clare at the Willie Week 1997. pauldooley.com Paul Dooley is one of the very few Irish people who play the Irish harp in its historical form and style - using a metal-strung harp, playing with the fingernails and damping unwanted string resonance with the fingertips. Paul studied the construction of medieval Irish harps in Dublin during the early 1980s and has built several harps. He started his performing career on the metal-strung harp in 1986 and has appeared on numerous CD recordings and television soundtracks. His repertoire consists mostly of traditional Irish dance music, including jigs and reels, some of which he has learned from recordings and printed music but mostly learned from other musicians: pipers, flute players and fiddlers. This music proves a real challenge for any type of harp and consequently hasn't been explored very much on the instrument. Paul has also spent the past ten years working on the Robert ap Huw manuscript, the oldest collection of harp music in existence.

The Moldau (Vlatva) from Mà Vlast (My Homeland) by B. Smetana played on glass harp by Robert Tiso. The piece contains Smetana's most famous tune. It is an adaptation of the melody La Mantovana, attributed to the Italian renaissance tenor Giuseppe Cenci (also known as Giuseppino), which, in a borrowed Moldovan form, was also the basis for the Israeli national anthem, Hatikvah. The tune also appears in major in an old Czech folk song Kočka leze dírou ("The Cat Crawls Through the Hole") and Hans Eisler used it for his "Song of the Moldau".

Cantaloupe Music is proud to present the debut recording of Kutman Sultanbekov and Kambar Kalendarov - master musicians of Kyrgyzstan - in JAW, a recording of new and newly arranged traditional music for the Kyrgyz jaw harp. Kutman and Kambar were the runaway hit stars of the 2008 Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival at Mass MoCA and returned to the US in the summer of 2009 for an appearance (and subsequent radio broadcast) at the Bang on a Can Festival in New York. Both virtuosos of traditional Kyrgyz music and composers, this album focuses on bringing the jaw harp into the 21st century in a recording that combines the mind-blowing trance-like sound of the instrument with a surprisingly contemporary aesthetic. This is not your grandfather's jaw harp music. In fact, an album like this has never been made. Featured tracks on JAW include Mezgil Jangyrygy, which almost sounds like The Kinks in Kyrgyzstan, with a driving groove supporting a screaming overtone melody. Many tracks feature the monster (and infectious) bass jaw harps, including Kukuk, Boz Uido and Kosh Kairyk, an all-out battle of these dueling giants. Jangylyk will bring to mind Celtic fiddling and Tengir Too is a trippy journey into Silk Road psychedelia. The jaw harp is a tantalizingly elemental instrument - made of wood or of metal, it makes its sound by vibrating a tiny bar of metal, the sound resonating within the player's mouth. In addition to solo performing, Alex loves to play Celtic music with his brothers Sam on the Fiddle and Simeon on the cello. As teens, they formed the band Kirkmount and if you're lucky, you can still catch the whole group performing at Celtic and Folk festivals from time to time.
