"Fireflies" by Owl City (Harp cover)

I've gotten several requests for this song, but there are a ridiculous number of people on youtube who have covered this song on piano, so I thought I would be different and do it on the harp... haha! Yes I realize there are mistakes and I didn't get the melody right in some parts, but hopefully you will enjoy it anyway..! Carolan's Dream - played on celtic harp

Turlough O'Carolan was an irish harpist who lived in the mid-1600s and wrote pieces for the people he met and stayed with - playing music in exchange for hospitality. Tradition has it that the harp was played last thing at night, before people went to bed. The building I'm playing it in was a bakery built around 1790, serving the local houses. The bread oven is in the stone wall behind me, and the building has a new floor and triple-glazing on the windows. It's a great mixture of old and new and a great place to play this music. Appropriately, I recorded this piece very late one night, and just went with the first take so the playing has the odd rough bits. I like to think that's authentic - apparently Carolan never played the same way twice. Bet he never had as much trouble as I did finding DivX codecs, either! Only the melodies survive, so I've done this arrangement myself and I'm playing it here on a Pilgrim gut-strung harp. The arrangement and video is my copyright. You are welcome to learn and play the arrangement (by ear - I haven't written it down!) if you like it - but please credit me if you play it in public. If you like it, I'll post more music. To make the recording I used a Sony 3-CCD camera direct to hard disk, with one audio take, noise-reduced in Cool Edit Pro, with Adobe Premiere Pro to edit the visuals together. If you want a higher-quality file to download and keep on your computer, just send me a message. CD NOW AVAILABLE! Just type "Mark Harmer" into <b>...</b>

La Partida - played on Paraguayan harp

Some say it's called "Quiero ser tu sombra" (wanna be your shadow), apparently by Hector Quattromanos and Zulema Alcayaga but this tune has been claimed by many people. Thanks to a fellow YouTube user who did some research, we now know that the tune I play is in fact traditional. It's such a great piece - I love the slinkiness of it (if that's not a word, it is now). The Paraguayan harp is amazing - the sound on this recording is just noise-reduced, no other audio treatment - you can hear the sparkly treble and deep bass. The harp has guitar-type tuners (machine heads) which can be a bit fiddly near the middle of the harp, where it curves inwards. You hardly have to touch the strings to make it work - and when you play loud, the strings have the characteristic "twang" which you can use for special effects. I bought it at the Stamford Harp Festival and there's a rolled-up banknote in the end of the harp at the top - I can't get it out so who knows what it's worth! Apparently people would put banknotes in between the strings or into the top, as a tip. If you're a harpist, you might spot that the strings don't follow the conventional colours because Paraguayan harps have the C string in blue, and the F string in red, the reverse of other harps. I'm playing it in my annex, which was a bakery serving the local houses, built around 1790 - that's the bread oven in the stone wall behind me. This is another of my late-night recordings, and it's the first complete take - so there's <b>...</b>

Wind Plays Harp

Shot at Electric Eclectics Festival in Meaford, Ontario - Aug. 2009. I recorded this with a wireless Sennheiser lavalier mic placed inside the cavity of the harp (that's how I don't have any wind blowing dampening the sound). This is the raw recording with no effects added. The wind was strong enough to vibrate the strings and make a sound.

Winter Harp Avalon Video

Winter Harps Avalon video, about the death of King Arthur, was filmed for Bravo Television on a remote beach on British Columbia's west coast. According to legend, after the 12th great battle, King Arthur was mortally wounded. Queen Guinevere (Winter Harp singer Lori Pappajohn) says her final farewell to King Arthur before three mysterious queens appear from the sea and transport him to the Isle of Avalon. The video also features nyckelharpa player Joaquin Ayala as well as percussionist Lauri Lyster on the udu (clay pot). The director was Bruce Spangler. Joaquin Ayala was also in charge of the boat the queens sailed in. The Viking boat had been sitting for years outside the local Scandinavian centre. As the wooden boat was very old, it had numerous holes and therefore didn't float. Joaquin spent several weeks fixing it up. It finally floated with the help of 3 heavy-duty bilge pumps. Harp Music -- Paul Dooley

From the Crosses Of Annagh Pub, Miltown Malbay,County Clare at the Willie Week 1997. pauldooley.com Paul Dooley is one of the very few Irish people who play the Irish harp in its historical form and style - using a metal-strung harp, playing with the fingernails and damping unwanted string resonance with the fingertips. Paul studied the construction of medieval Irish harps in Dublin during the early 1980s and has built several harps. He started his performing career on the metal-strung harp in 1986 and has appeared on numerous CD recordings and television soundtracks. His repertoire consists mostly of traditional Irish dance music, including jigs and reels, some of which he has learned from recordings and printed music but mostly learned from other musicians: pipers, flute players and fiddlers. This music proves a real challenge for any type of harp and consequently hasn't been explored very much on the instrument. Paul has also spent the past ten years working on the Robert ap Huw manuscript, the oldest collection of harp music in existence.

Everette Harp - Central Park West

Although Harp's first love was traditional Jazz, he has made his mark as one of the best-selling and most sought after ambassadors of contemporary Jazz for close to two decades. His soulful and trademark blend of Jazz, R&B, Funk and Pop have made him a favorite. With an illustrious career that has allowed him to collaborate with everyone from Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker, Luther Vandross and Patti Labelle to George Duke, Herbie Hancock, Billy Joel and Kenny Loggins, Harp has left an indelible imprint on the scene with his own unique, muscular and soulful approach. First Love, Harps new and third Shanachie Entertainment CD is truly a labor of love and was inspired by opportunities he has had over the past year and a half to play both contemporary Jazz and mainstream Jazz gigs in the US and abroad. First Love is a testament to Everette Harp's sensitivity and maturity as a musician to transcend boundaries. Comfortable in any musical context, Harps compositional prowess shines through, as does his agile, robust, thoughtful and melodic horn playing. First Love features the groove heavy Before You Leave showcasing the rhythm section of George Duke on Fender Rhodes, bassist James Genus, drummer Terri Lynn Carrington and guitarist Dwight Sills. A special high point on First Love is Everette Harp's sublime rendition of John Coltrane's Central Park West from Tranes landmark 1960 session Coltranes Sound. Stockhausen - Freude (Joy) - for two harps

Harpist Marianne smit plays the first 7 minutes of Stockhausens "Freude für Zwei Harfen" together with Harpist Esther Kooi. Karlheinz Stockhausen (1928 - 2007) has written "Freude für Zwei Harfen" (2005), also known as "Joy", for harpists Esther Kooi and Marianne Smit. Modern composers utilize the harp frequently, but while the pedals on a concert harp allow many sorts of non-diatonic scales and strange accidentals to be played, some modern pieces call for impractical pedal manipulations. In 2005 German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen solved this problem in his own way by composing 'Freude' (Joy, 2005) for two harps, 2nd hour in the 'Klang' cycle. In this piece he created opportunities for non-diatonic scales by dividing the piece over two harps. He required Dutch harpists Marianne Smit and Esther Kooi to study daily in excess of 6 months to create an absolute synergy in the 40 minute piece. www.mariannesmit.com

Vulcan Harp & Theremin

This is called THE KATRIC ARK and it is one of a series of 12 compositions for Vulcan harp and theremin. Since the Vulcan harp was introduced by artist and visionary Wah Ming Chang more than 40 years ago, it has evolved considerably, along with the technology involved with its manufacture. It is acoustic, electroacoustic and electronic (it is the electronic component that permits such things as the playing of complex harmonies, glide pitch shifts, etc.). As a sculptor, Chang molded the instrument to fit the human body, and it is great to hold because it is so wonderfully ergonomic. This particular harp has 26 strings (copper, brass and silver) and is played with finger picks. There are no steel strings and the instrument does not use magnetic pickups like electric guitars. It also does not need to be plugged into anything so there are no annoying cables to get in the way. It transmits directly to its amplifier and speakers by means of an antenna integrated into the pin column (the extended curved vertical arm that holds the tuning pins). The two speakers you see in the video are JBL JRX-125 monitors. As a concept, the characteristics of "Vulcan music" are determined by the remarkable capabilities of the Vulcan harp which include many of the possibilities of the classical instruments of India. The sound of the Vulcan harp has been described as a combination of harp, lute, violin and sitar. If you add to this everything that is possible with the use of the shift disc and <b>...</b>

Meldis (Celtic Harp) - "Son ar Chistr"

Anastassia Papisova is the first to independently master the Celtic (Irish) harp in Russia. She began to learn playing the harp all by herself; because she was impressed by the music of Alan Stivell and Clannad. Celtic harps were then just not available in Russia. She was lucky, however: a friend of hers moved to France and was able to get her a harp. Not surprisingly she was unable to find a teacher but she found how the harp was tuned on the Internet. Two months later she was invited to play at the first Celtic Music Festival in Russia. Two years later Anastassia performed in solo concerts in Dublin and Belfast... www.meldis.ru
