The Egyptian businessman, Mohamed Al Fayed, has sold Harrods for around one-and-a-half billion pounds. The new owner -- Qatar Holdings -- has been chosen because it has promised to maintain the traditions of the world-famous department store in London. Mr Al Fayed assumed control of Harrods in 1985 after a takeover battle with the tycoon, Tiny Rowland. A spokesman said today he'd decided to retire and spend more time with his children and grandchildren. On Saturday 18th June, British actress Gemma Arterton opened the most anticipated retail event of the year: the Harrods Summer Sale. The former Bond Girl and Glamour Awards Film Actress of the Year for 2011, wowed crowds in a black and white sequin Balmain dress selected by Harrods BY APPOINTMENT personal shopping service. Gemma was welcomed by Executive Director and Head of General Investment Portfolio of Qatar Holding and Harrods board member, Dr Kamel Maamria. The Egyptian-born tycoon acquired the business in Knightsbridge following a £615m takeover in 1985. Ken Costa, an adviser to the deal with Qatar Holdings, said Mr Al Fayed was retiring "to spend more time with his children and grandchildren". He will continue to promote the store in the role of honorary chairman. But Mr Al Fayed will not be involved in running the company on a day-to-day basis. Its chairman, Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassim Bin Jabr Al-Thani, who is also Qatar's prime minister, said Harrods would add "much value" to its portfolio of investments and generate "good and stable returns as a business". He added: "It's a historical place. I know it's important, not only for the British people but it is important for the tourism." His vice-chairman, Dr Hussain Ali Al-Abdulla, said the acquisition was a "landmark transaction".
