WW2 - Major Erich Hartmann - Greatest Fighter Ace

Erich Hartmann was the most successful fighter pilot of the Second World War, with 352 victories to his credit. Only 20 years old when he joined the 9th squadron of the 52nd Fighter Wing in the Ukraine, by July 1944, Hartmann had gained the Knights Cross with Oak-Leaves, Swords and Diamonds. Hartman' s technique was to approach to within 150 yards of his target before opening fire. It was an extremely hazardous tactic, but by August 1944, Hartmann had won 301 victories. In February 1945, Hartmann took command of the 52nd Fighter Wing. On May 8th 1945, the day of Germany's surrender, Hartmann shot down a Soviet fighter for his 352nd kill. He was the last Luftwaffe pilot of World War 2 to claim a victory. en.wikipedia.org

Hartmann: Destroying the Postal Service - another Manufactured Crisis

The United States Post Office is on the verge of shutting down. According to the New York Times - the Post Office is quickly running out of cash and may be forced to shut down this winter. While the media story line is that the Post Office is dealing with the problem of trying to remain profitable in a world of decreasing paper mail - the real cause is actually something much, much different. Consider that this year - like every year since 2006 - the Post Office is legally required to make a $5 billion annual contribution to a retirement account to pay for future retirees who aren't even born yet. For more on this Thom Hartmann is joined by Chuck Zlatkin - Legislative and Political Director of the New York Metro Area Postal Union.

Paul Gunter, Beyond Nuclear joins Thom Hartmann. Meanwhile, Japan is not out of the danger zone...in fact the nuclear crisis is getting worse and worse! Hartmann: Fukushima...Has the China Syndrome now officially begun?

Paul Gunter, Beyond Nuclear joins Thom Hartmann. The crisis at Fukushima continues. Over the weekend - the crippled Japanese nuclear plant spewed even more highly radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean - roughly 45000 liters in all. According to a French nuclear research institute - since the Fukushima nuclear crisis began in March - the plant has leaked more radioactive material into the ocean than has ever happened before in the history of the planet. And he claims that after more than 8 months since an earthquake and tsunami triggered this crisis - it's inevitable that nuclear fuel has leaked into the groundwater - meaning the "China Syndrome" is officially upon us. He also warned that if underground water gets overheated - it could trigger a hydrovolcanic explosion. So what does all this mean? Time to ditch nuclear power - the most expensive and dangerous form of energy on Earth.

Ian Millhiser, Center for American Progress joins Thom Hartmann. Is the Supreme Court about to give corporations the right to commit genocide? Believe it or not - that may happen. The High Court has agreed to hear the case of Kiobel v. Royal Dutch Petroleum which could give corporations immunity from any lawsuits for their employees murdering, raping, or torturing people in the areas where they're drilling for oil or fielding mercenary armies - just as long as they're carrying out the atrocities under the heading of corporate business.

Thom Hartmann: Why Fox News has the Right to Lie to Us

Ever wonder why it is that Fox News can lie over and over again - yet continue to call itself "News"? It's because Fox News is a corporation - and ever since that 1886 Supreme Court case of Southern Pacific Railroad versus Santa Clara County when a rogue court reporter named JC Bancroft Davis slipped corporate personhood into the legal record - the courts have ruled time and time again that corporations - since they have all the rights that actual people have - could also lie just like people can. Except for one time. Back in 1998 - a political activist named Mark Kasky sued Nike alleging that Nike was lying to its customers by publishing in the San Francisco Examiner a letter assuring everyone that the corporation's workers around the world enjoy basic labor rights like a minimum wage - health and safety regulations - and equal opportunity employment. Kasky knew this claim wasn't true. A 1996 audit of the Nike revealed that workers in Vietnam were routinely exposed to cancer-causing chemicals that were illegal in the United States. And a Mothers Jones article later cited a Nike-funded study that found, "evidence of physical and verbal abuse and sexual harassment at nine of its contract factories in Indonesia." After realizing he and thousands of other Nike customers were lied to and were buying Nike products under false assumptions - Kasky took the corporation to court. And in 2002 - Kasky won his case before the California Supreme Court which ruled that Nike did indeed ...

It's now illegal to know what's in your food

Todd Tucker, Public Citizen's Global Trade Watch joins Thom Hartmann. Put down that fork! Do you now what's REALLY on your dinner plate? Well - it's becoming increasingly difficult for you to find out and there may be very little our lawmakers can do about it. Do you know what's in your dinner? Chances are...you probably don't. That's because recent rulings by the World Trade Organization have made it harder and harder for Americans to know if what they're eating is safe - and exactly where it came from. For example - last month - the the WTO struck down a law passed by Congress and signed by the President in 2008 had required labels on all meat so that we know what country the cattle was born, raised, and slaughtered in. Think about that for a second - laws passed by our elected Representatives are being struck down by foreign bureacrats and corporations through the World Trade Organization. Also this year - the WTO struck down dolphin-safe tuna labels - arguing that it would do economic harm to foreign fishing fleets that slaughter dolphins in the process of catching tuna. So why is this? Why is it suddenly illegal for us to know more about what's in the food we eat? And why are we as a nation bending at the will of the WTO?

Hartmann: Euro crisis...Is the UK preparing for the END of the world?

Professor Steve Keen, University of Western Sydney, joins Thom Hartmann. While hoardes of Americans were beating the heck out of each other for two-dollar waffle makers in Wal Mart - the UK quietly announced that is preparing for an all out collapse of the global banking system. A Senior Minister within the UK government admitted to the Telegraph over the weekend that planning is already underway to deal with the aftermath of a Eurozone collapse and subsequent civil unrest. According to the article, UK government officials now believe a collapse of the euro is "just a matter of time," and consulates around Europe are being prepped to deal with rioting in other nations and how to help British citizens abroad who may soon be unable to access bank accounts and withdraw cash. On top of that news - in a new report - the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development drastically cut its expectations for economic growth in Europe and the United States over the next year. According to the OECD - Europe is stuck in a mild recession and the United States will soon follow. So just how bad can it get? And what can be done to mitigate the damage?

Thom Hartmann: The final words of a killer that should not be ignored

Last night - a man in Texas was executed. His name was Mark Stroman - and he was given a lethal injection by the state of Texas because he let himself get consumed with hate. 10 days after 9/11 - Stroman went on a shooting spree hell bent on killing as many Muslims as he could. On three separate nights he walked into Dallas gas stations with a shotgun -opening fire - killing two Muslim men - and shooting another man in the face. The third victim - Rais Bhuiyan - just barely survived the shooting. Bhuiyan will be partially blind for the rest of his life because of his injuries - but he wasn't interested in eye-for-an-eye justice. Why? Because his Muslim religion preaches forgiveness. All the way up until the day that Stroman was executed - Bhuyian petitioned the state of Texas to spare Stroman's life - launching a global petition to have his sentence commuted to life without parole. And Stroman took notice - he was struck by the compassion that was afforded to him by one of his victims - and he changed his ways. In a message to Rais BhuIyan from jail - Stroman said, "In the free world, I was free but I was locked in a prison inside myself because of the hate I carried in my heart...It is due to Rais' message of forgiveness that I am more content now than I have ever been." And last night - Stroman built on the message and used his final breath to issue these last words for us all to hear. He said, "Hate is going on in this world and it has to stop. Hate causes a lifetime ...

Thom Hartmann: Can we steal the "Finland Phenomenon" for our schools?

A new study by the American Journal of Public Health takes a look at how certain social factors contribute to early deaths. Looking at just the year 2000 - the study found that 245000 Americans died from causes directly related to low education. In comparison, according to FBI crime data - just over 15000 Americans were murdered in the year 2000. That means nearly 15 times as many Americans died because they failed to achieve adequate levels of education than were killed in acts of homicide. And out of the 34 OECD nations - American high school students currently rank 14th for reading skills - 17th for science - and 25th for math skills. Yet - Republicans don't hesitate to gut public education with spending cuts and by waging war on teachers unions nationwide. But Finland's educations system has consistently ranked number one in world. So what are the Fins doing right - and what can we learn from them? Joining Thom to answer these questions is documentary filmmaker Bob Compton, whose new film "The Finland Phenomenon" offers a fascinating look into the world's best education system.

Hartmann: Why the 1% are Less Empathetic to the Poor

So doesn't it just seem to you like the 1% just don't give a damn about anyone else? That they lack basic empathy and compassion? This week - Bank of America got hit with a $335 million settlement for preying on minority homebuyers. Their subsidiary - Countrywide - systematically screwed over blacks and latinos - people who just walked in - looking to buy a home - and walked out with a subprime exploding mortgages - even though they qualified for the non-exploding normal mortgages that white people were getting Banksters looked at these prospective homebuyers not as customers - not as fellow Americans - not as neighbors or friends - but instead as suckers - people they could con into a crooked mortgage and walk away with extra fees. Where's the compassion for your fellow man? Meanwhile - in the House of Representatives - Republicans - nearly half of whom are millionaires - have spent most of this week fighting an extention of the payroll tax cut and extended unemployment benefits for the jobless. They just don't care about what a thousand dollar tax increase on 160 million Americans might mean: To many of them - like Darryl Issa - the second richest man in Congress - that's just pocket change. They don't understand what getting cut off from an unemployment check could do to a family. So they sit on their hands - or call unemployed people lazy - and tell the uninsured to take more responsibility for themselves. Where's the empathy?

Thom Hartmann: The Mystery of the Concord Project you need to know

I have a mission for you - and it's not impossible. Progressives shouldn't just be FIGHTING the Tea Party - we should be LEARNING from the Tea Party too. No - not learning from their bizarro economics - or selfish morality - or destructive idealism - but instead learning from how they took control of the Republican Party and forced the entire Conservative establishment to lurch so far to the Right that they've even dumped people like David Frum. If progressives hope to have any shot at influencing today's Democratic Party - and kicking out the corporate Blue Dog Democrats and replacing them with real-deal progressives - then we need to get to work right now - and do exactly what the Tea Party did a year and a half ago to take power. And it starts in our own backyards. Let me introduce you to the Concord Project - a right-wing organization in charge of getting out the vote for Republicans. Last year - the Concord Project expanded their get out the vote strategy beyond just traditional phone banking - canvassing - and putting up "vote Republican" signs - they decided to infiltrate local politics by encouraging Tea Partiers to become Precinct Committeemen.
