The Republicans newly proposed jobs plan is based around tax breaks (including to hedge fund managers. More via Think Progress: "What's really holding back small businesses is a lack of demand in the economy, and there's no reason for businesses to hire, no matter how many tax breaks they receive, unless they have an expectation of more customers. Cloud computing is changing the hedge fund landscape - what drives more and more hedge funds...

Vinod Paul is a technology specialist in the hedge fund space, having advised directly on technology infrastructure implementations for over 600 hedge funds during the last 15 years. In this Opalesque.TV interview, Vinod discusses the impact of cloud computing as it re-shapes the global technology landscape in the hedge fund space. Just 2-3 years ago, traditional technology systems such as OMS, EMS, PMS, risk systems or disaster recovery, required a fund to spend $200000-$500000 - to provide an institutional level of service to investors. These applications were cost-prohibitive, crippling a small fund's ability to access institutional level technology and therefore institutional allocations. However, according to Vinod, cloud computing is now "leveling the playing field" for the smaller funds to compete for institutional allocations. Small funds are now able to scale and implement all institutional level service applications by placing systems in the cloud, and managing and adding applications easily in a fast, scalable, and cost-efficient way to meet institutional priorities of recovery, mobility features, and high availability systems. Learn about how the cloud has streamlined operational processes by automating previously manual systems, resulting in a permanent transformation of the hedge fund landscape through increased access to mobility and widespread access to institutional-level technological capabilities. Opalesque Campus: Top Hedge Fund Academic - Operational Due Diligence as a Source of Alpha

In this Opalesque.TV interview, Professor Stephen Brown describes how his recent research reports into operational due diligence have shown that operational risk is the "disease" that plagues hedge funds and funds of funds, and accounts for low market-adjusted returns along with many of the fund failures that occurred in 2008. While financial risk is a "symptom" of the disease, operational risk is more predictive of fund failure than is financial risk. Prof. Brown's evidence points to his conclusion that due diligence is a source of alpha. By analyzing the operational characteristics of funds, Prof. Brown's research proves that managers and investors did not take due diligence processes very seriously leading up to 2008. Focusing on the central role of funds of funds as the primary conduit for institutional investing into the hedge fund space, Stephen argues that the traditional question of how much diversification a fund of funds should utilize is the wrong question. What is most significant is not the number of hedge funds that a fund of funds invests in, but the affordability of appropriate due diligence. In addition, learn about the following: • Analyzing all Form ADV data to determine operational risk characteristics • Are legal and regulatory action against hedge funds predictive of operational risk? • How are Leverage, Ownership Structure, and Conflicts of Interest used as indicators of operational risk? • How 444 private investigator reports explain funds of funds ...

IMQubator Seeding Model: Engineering hedge fund products to be bought, not sold

IMQubator is a Dutch emerging manager seeding fund that connects institutional investors with emerging asset management talent. The firm was founded by Jeroen Tielman in 2009 with a €250m investment from APG, the asset manager for Dutch pensions giant Stichting Pensioenfonds ABP. In this Opalesque.TV interview, Tielman gives insight into IMQubator's seeding model, which seeks to address escalating investor concerns over lack of liquidity, inadequate transparency, fee structures, and governance structures that overwhelmingly benefit managers, by providing a pure "end-investor" model. According to Tielman, because seeders can connect with top emerging managers in a unique moment of their professional life-cycle where capital infusion is critical, seeding is that perfect moment to align interest between investors and managers. He promotes adjusting governance structures together with the emerging manager to provide end-investors with more power, engineering hedge fund products "to be bought, not sold". Institutional investor liability mismatches can therefore benefit from the absolute return nature of hedge fund investments, which are skill based - as opposed to long only - while capitalizing on improved governance structures. In addition, learn about the following: • The IMQubator seeding partnership model: -End-investor orientation: Aligns interests between investors and managers through enhanced governance -Geographic proximity to managers -Support operations and business ...

Hedge Funds to Sue Greece

The threat of a Greek default is still in the air as failed talks send signals that they might miss a 14.5 billion Euro bond payment on March 20th. In order for Greece to receive its latest bailout and cut its debt, bond restructuring is considered a key element. And Greece is considering passing legislation to force all private bondholders to take losses. So the hedge funds are fighting back and threatened to sue Greece in a human rights court arguing that Greece violated bondholder rights. Capital Account's Demetri Kofinas explains.

Galleon hedge fund founder Raj Rajaratnam guilty to fraud now faces jail

www.facebook.com www.twitter.com Hedge fund billionaire Raj Rajaratnam has been found guilty of insider dealing, becoming the highest-profile scalp in the history of such investigations in the US. He now faces up to 20 years in prison. The 53-year-old co-founder of the Galleon group was found guilty of 14 charges of securities fraud and conspiracy after a trial in New York. Prosecutors accused the Sri Lankan-born billionaire of making $63.8m (£39m) from tips by corporate insiders and hedge-fund traders, and used controversial surveillance techniques to secure the conviction. Rajaratnam was arrested in October 2009 and the government's investigation has widened to other hedge funds, so-called expert network firms, banks and technology companies. Some 19 people have pleaded guilty in the investigation. The eight women and four men of the jury took 11 days to reach a verdict. Their decision was delayed after one juror was excused on medical grounds and a replacement had to be brought in. The trial began on 8 March and involved some of the biggest names in US business. Rajaratnam was the most prominent corporate prosecution since the credit crunch. Unlike fraudster Bernard Madoff, Rajaratnam maintained he was innocent and assembled a high-powered defence team. Goldman Sachs boss Lloyd Blankfein was called to give evidence after prosecutors alleged former Goldman director Rajat Gupta had leaked confidential information he had received from Blankfein. What is a Hedge Fund.m4v

residualincomelife.com If you are like me you always been intrigued by the way wealthy people use the wealth they have to grow more money for themselves. One of the vehicles wealthy people use are What is a Hedge Fund? Before we can take advantage of hedge funds trading strategies with our money we must understand how a hedge fund works. First and foremost a hedge fund is a large amount of money that is managed by a hedge fund manager. You might be thinking how is that guy different from my current investment manager? The hedge fund manager is different in many ways. First, the hedge fund manager will use any investing tool possible to make you money. For example, hedge funds trade stocks, bonds, options, currencies, commodities, futures, etfs, and even real estate to make you money. Your current investments are most likely in IRA's and 401K's which own mutual funds and are based on the principle that you are willing to hope in 40 years you have enough to retire. Hedge funds are based on the idea of making as much money as possible with every trade, thus increasing returns and lowering your retirement age. How Does It Work? How a hedge fund works is actually very simple. The idea of a "hedge" is to have the ability to make money whether the market is up or down. For example, you will be both long (you want the price to increase) and short (you want the price to decrease) stocks. That allows you to make money in any economy. Secondly, as previously discussed your money ...

'London Whale' Rattles Debt Market

In recent weeks, hedge funds and other investors have been puzzled by unusual movements in some credit markets, and have been buzzing about the identity of a deep-pocketed trader dubbed "the London whale." That trader, according to people familiar with the matter, is a low-profile, French-born JP Morgan Chase & Co. employee named Bruno Michel Iksil. Mr. Iksil has taken large positions for the bank in insurance-like products called credit-default swaps. Lately, partly in reaction to market movements possibly resulting from Mr. Iksil's trades, some hedge funds and others have made heavy opposing bets, according to people close to the matter.
