I had the privilege of sitting in and playing a few tunes with my good friend Kirby Keough while visiting Kauai a couple of weeks ago. One of the songs we always jam on is Henehene Kou `Aka. Ive been meaning to either do a tab or tutorial for this one for quite some time but just never seemed to get around to it. Tonight Im posting up a video tutorial that presents my approach to the intro and verse sections of Henehene based loosely on the version IZ plays on his Facing Future CD. This video isnt as detailed as some of my previous tutorials and it still went beyond the 10 minute limit imposed by Youtube. I was hoping to be able to get it all on just one video but it didnt work out that way. I will present the solo in another video in the next few days. Though not as detailed, I believe this tutorial will give you a good idea of how Im approaching the tune and have you well armed to play it with your friends at the next club meeting or jam session. Israel "IZ" Kaʻanoʻi Kamakawiwoʻole (Hawaiian pronunciation: [kaˌmakaˌʋiwoˈʔole]; May 20, 1959 -- June 26, 1997) was a Hawaiian musician. He became famous outside Hawaii when his album Facing Future was released in 1993. His medley of "Over the Rainbow" and "What a Wonderful World" was subsequently featured in several films, television programs, and commercials. Through his ukulele playing and incorporation of other genres (such as jazz and reggae), Kamakawiwoʻole remains one of the major influences in Hawaiian music.

Here is IMUAs cover of Henehene Kou 'Aka. I was lucky enough to be on Oahu in Aug 2006 when David Dunaway (IMUA) was performing at a local shopping center. I first saw IMUA a few years earlier at Makaha Sons "Take a Walk in the Country" concert in Makaha Valley and was hooked. David is one of the best voices in Hawaii and his compositions are incredible.

This song, written by Kamehameha School kids in almost a century ago, is still fun to sing. The title means something like "Your laughter is contagious" and talks about riding the old street cars around O'ahu. It's a favorite at kanikapila because it can be sung in many ways and their are naughty verses added at times.
I had the pleasure of sitting in with Kirby Keough during my recent trip to Kauai. Henehene is a fun one to jam on and I always look forward to playing it with Kirby. I plan to do a tutorial on this one soon.

This song connects back to Kamehameha Schools students who would ride the street cars of Honolulu together. On one particular outing in the early 1920ˆs, Pono Beamer was taking his sweetheart, Louise Walker, on the new line along King Street from Farrington High School (near the first Kamehameha campus) to Kakaˆako. Louise had never ridden a street car, so it was a special excursion for the young couple. When the engine started up, she became ha`alulu (shaken)! He put his arm around her to calm her down. She was terribly embarassed by that - especially in front of all the other students, so she jumped up and flounced off the car. Pono reminded her, "Weren't you going with us to have some of my Aunty Mariah's (Mariah Desha Auld) beef stew?" Enticed by the reputation of Aunty Mariah's delicious pipi stew, Louise got back on the trolly. (That stew must have been VERY enticing as, eventually, Louise and Pono married and had several children, among them the renowned Nona Beamer) As they traveled by trolley and walked around the districts of Honolulu, the students began making verses to tell the story.
